A summary of the resource.
By means of G4 theory and M06-2X calculations we investigated the thermochemistry and C–OH bond ruptures of quercetin, fistein, lutelin, caffeic acid, pinocembrin and p-coumaric acid. Notwithstanding the fact that we observed a good agreement for the prediction of the weakest O–H bond, the mean absolute deviation (MAD) between the bond dissociation energies (BDE) computed at the G4 and M06-2X/6-311+G(3df,2p) levels was 5.0 kcal/mol. With regard to the ΔHof,0 computed at the M06-2X/6-311+G(3df,2p) level, the MAD was 10.0 kcal/mol. Therefore, thanks to error cancellation the error found for the O–H BDE was smaller. Intramolecular hydrogen bond is one of the key factors stabilizing the oxygen radicals formed when the CO–H bonds are broken. Finally, we propose the following enthalpies of formation at 0 K: −222.0, −174.5, −180.2, −134.4, −109.7 and −91.9 kcal/mol for quercetin, fistein, lutelin, caffeic acid, pinocembrin and p-coumaric acid, respectively.

New bond valence R0 parameters were derived for alkali– and alkaline-earth–oxygen pairs encountered in metal−organic compounds. A total of 7693 metal−oxygen bond lengths were extracted from structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and containing at least one carboxylate ligand bound to the metal. One hundred structures were individually analyzed for each metal. R0 values were computed using two different approaches: geometric mean and graphical fitting. In both cases, the bond valence parameter b was fixed at 0.37 Å. R0 values obtained using a geometric mean approach were 1.744 (Na–O), 2.094 (K–O), 2.228 (Rb–O), 2.412 (Cs–O), 1.661 (Mg–O), 1.933 (Ca–O), 2.090 (Sr–O), and 2.265 Å (Ba–O). These parameters yielded more accurate metal bond valence sums (BVS) and lower root-mean square deviations (RMSD) than those computed using R0 values currently available in the literature,1 which had been derived from the structures of inorganic oxides. The most significant improvement was observed for sodium (this work mean BVS = 1.01 v.u., RMSD = 0.116 v.u.; literature mean BVS = 1.18 v.u., RMSD = 0.226 v.u.; v.u.: valence units) and magnesium (this work mean BVS = 2.00 v.u., RMSD = 0.038 v.u.; literature mean BVS = 2.18 v.u., RMSD = 0.100 v.u.). More accurate bond valence sums and lower variances were also observed when the new set of R0 values was applied to metal–organic compounds featuring oxygenated ligands such as ethers, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, and esthers. These parameters should be applicable to the structural and crystal-chemical analysis of metal−organic compounds ranging from coordination complexes to organic−inorganic extended hybrids.

We revisit the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) of silicon trimer and evaluate the gaps of its derivatives by attachment of a cation (H+, Li+, Na+, and K+) using the wavefunction-based methods including the composite G4, coupled-cluster theory CCSD(T)/CBS, CCSDT and CCSDTQ, and CASSCF/CASPT2 (for Si3) computations. Both 1A1 and 3 inline image states of Si3 are determined to be degenerate. An intersystem crossing between both states appears to be possible at a point having an apex bond angle of around α = 68 ± 2° which is 16 ± 4 kJ/mol above the ground state. The proton, Li+ and Na+ cations tend to favor the low-spin state, whereas the K+ cation favors the high-spin state. However, they do not modify significantly the ΔEST. The proton affinity of silicon trimer is determined as PA(Si3) = 830 ± 4 kJ/mol at 298 K. The metal cation affinities are also predicted to be LiCA(Si3) = 108 ± 8 kJ/mol, NaCA(Si3) = 79 ± 8 kJ/mol and KCA(Si3) = 44 ± 8 kJ/mol. The chemical bonding is probed using the electron localization function, and ring current analyses show that the singlet three-membered ring Si3 is, at most, nonaromatic. Attachment of the proton and Li+ cation renders it anti-aromatic. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A summary of the resource.
The immobilisation of b-galactosidase and amyloglucosidase (AMG) by means of physical adsorption on to bone powder is described. The in¯uence of the enzyme load, applied to the support on immobilisation, yield and eciency, has been determined. The immobilisation process improved the thermal stability of b-galactosidase (at 37�C), while immobilised AMG displayed a sta- bility (at 55�C) similar to that of the soluble enzyme. The apparent KM (Kapp) values have been determined for both derivatives, for the b-galactosidase derivative KM was 3 mM using the arti®cial substrate ONPG and, for the AMG derivative, it was 1 mg/ml using soluble starch as substrate. The extent of lactose hydrolysis achieved, batchwise, with b-galactosidase derivatives acting on lactose buered solutions, whey, whey permeates and skimmed milk, was in the range of 90% and decreased to 50% after 3 reuses. The conversion of 30% (w/v) lique®ed cassava starch achieved with the AMG derivative was 98% until the 11th reuse, and over 95% until the 20th reuse. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This research assesses the bench-scale application of a non-conventional support, bone particles, for glucoamylase (GA) immobilization and its subsequent use in cassava starch hydrolysis. Upon determining the appropriate conditions to immobilize GA onto chicken bone particles, such as pH, ionic strength, particle size, and enzyme load, bench-scale immobilization of commercial GA without further purification was performed. Under the selected conditions, 270 GA units per gram of support were adsorbed. Optimal temperature and thermal stability of immobilized GA were only slightly different from those of the free enzyme, while optimal pH became more acidic by about one unit. The feasibility of the use of this immobilized biocatalyst for high glucose syrup production from liquefied cassava starch, at bench scale in batch process using a stirred-tank reactor, was demonstrated. Repeated use of the GA-bone derivative showed that similar conversions to those achieved with soluble enzyme (dextrose equivalent=98) were reached until the third batch and over 90% until the 25th batch.

New processing technologies are gaining popularity worldwide due to several advantages related to food safety, shelf life extension, nutritional and sensory quality. However, consumers can be cautious of food products produced using these technologies. In this context, the objectives of the study were to explore consumers' spontaneous associations with fruit juices processed using different technologies, and to study the influence of food technology neophobia on those associations. A study with 423 Brazilian consumers was conducted to evaluate their perception of five types of juices (fresh juice, cold pressed juice, pasteurized juice, pressurized juice and non-pressurized juice) using word association. Participants also answered the Food Technology Neophobia Scale (FTNS) and a series of socio-demographic questions. Results showed that consumers' attitudes towards processing technologies were mainly defined by top-down processes. Fresh, cold pressed and non-pressurized juice were mainly associated with healthy and natural products, whereas concepts including references to processing technologies were associated with processed products and unhealthiness. Food technology neophobia moderated consumers' perceptions of juice processing technologies. Interestingly, consumers with high technology neophobia perceived juices processed by both conventional and innovative technologies more negatively than those with low or medium levels of neophobia.

A summary of the resource.
This narrative review revises the scientific evidence of recent years on healthy eating in children and adolescents, making sense of promising avenues of action, from a food system perspective. A conceptual framework is provided to better understand how eating habits of children and adolescents are shaped to identify key multisectoral approaches that should be implemented to promote healthier diets. The following influencing factors are discussed: individual factors (physiological and psychological factors, food preferences and food literacy competencies), factors within the personal and socio-cultural food environments, external food environments, and the supply chain. In each section, the main barriers to healthy eating are briefly discussed focussing on how to overcome them. Finally, a discussion with recommendations of actions is provided, anchored in scientific knowledge, and transferable to the general public, industry, and policymakers. We highlight that multidisciplinary approaches are not enough, a systems approach, with a truly holistic view, is needed. Apart from introducing systemic changes, a variety of interventions can be implemented at different levels to foster healthier diets in children through fostering healthier and more sustainable food environments, facilitating pleasurable sensory experiences, increasing their food literacy, and enhancing their agency by empowering them to make better food related decisions. Acknowledging children as unique individuals is required, through interpersonal interactions, as well as their role in their environments. Actions should aim to enable children and adolescents as active participants within sustainable food systems, to support healthier dietary behaviours that can be sustained throughout life, impacting health at a societal level.

Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp., respectively, are highly prevalent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that pose significant global health challenges. In our pursuit of effective vanadium-based therapeutics against these diseases, we previously developed several series of oxidovanadium( V) complexes featuring bidentate bioactive ligands and Schiff base tridentate ligands. The current study extends our previous research by incorporating in the same molecule, a tridentate bromo-substituted isonicotinyl hydrazone Schiff base ligand, BrIS, and a 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative (L), leading to the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of five new complexes, [VVO(BrIS-2H)(L-H)]. Most of new complexes exhibited activity in the micromolar range against the infective trypomastigote form of T. cruzi (EC50, 24h: 0.73–7.95 μM) and against L. infantum promastigotes (IC50, 5 days: 1.14–1.16 μM) and some of them showed good selectivity indexes towards the parasites (SI up to 52). Notably, the vanadium uptake by the parasites was higher for the new [VVO(BrIS-2H)(L-H)] compounds compared to [VVO(IN-2H)(L-H)] analogues previously developed, where IN is the structurally related 2-hydroxy-1-naphtaldehyde isonicotinoylhydrazone ligand, with accumulation in the soluble cell fraction. High-dose incubations resulted in trypanocidal effects and suggested the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Further analysis revealed that [VVO(BrIS-2H)(L-H)] complexes induced a higher percentage of apoptosis, whereas the [VVO(IN-2H)(L-H)] series was associated with autophagic cell death. These findings highlight the potential of the [VVO(BrIS-2H)(L-H)] series as promising anti-T. cruzi agents and underscore the need for further research to optimize their therapeutic efficacy and explore their mechanisms of action.

The C60H28 buckycatcher (BC) is an excellent host for fullerenes. This receptor features two corannulene pincers which trap C60/C70 via π stacking interactions. Although, the formation of C60@C60H28 complexes is readily observed, the dimerization of C60H28 is not a competitive process, even at high concentrations. By means of first principle calculations, we have studied the thermodynamics of the polymerization of BCs and the formation of fullerene complexes. The results obtained with the M06-2X, B97-D, B3LYP-D3BJ, PBE-D2, and PBE-D3 functionals indicated that the interaction energy of (C60H28)2 is larger than the one computed for C60@C60H28, by 8–10 kcal/mol. Because of the greater number of atoms, and due to the presence of more hydrogens, the inclusion of free energy corrections lowers the energetic separation between (C60H28)2 and C60@C60H28, even though the dimer maintains its position as being slightly more bound than that of the C60@C60H28. Our calculations indicated that up to the C60H28 trimer could be formed with a free energy change larger than that corresponding to the dimerization and fullerene complexation processes. Finally, we found that the inversion of the corannulene pincers attached to the cyclooctatetraene core is 2–3 kcal/mol lower than that corresponding to free corannulene. We expect that this work can motivate new investigations that may lead to the observation of C60H28 polymers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Ochenta y dos plantas silvestres se recolectaron de diversos orígenes geográficos y en diferentes épocas del año que se han caracterizado botánicamente y sus extractos etanólicos se evaluaron frente a la forma epimastigote de Trypanosoma cruzi. Las plantas pertenecen a las siguientes especies: Hydrocotyle bonariensis, Baccharis trimera, Baccharis articulata, Baccharis usterii, Taraxacum officinale, Plantago major y Achyrocline satureioides. Se encontró que las muestras de Hydrocotyle bonariensis, Baccharis trimera, Baccharis articulata y Baccharis usterii presentan significativa actividad anti-proliferativa. También se evaluó la actividad citotóxica en células mamíferas de los extractos con relevante actividad antiparasitaria para la determinación de la selectividad de los mismos. Se observó que las tres especies de Baccharis eran las que presentaban mejores selectividades. Los extractos que resultaron más activos y selectivos se evaluaron frente a amastigotes, la forma intracelular del parásito, encontrándose una muy buena correlación de actividades. Se observó que la actividad anti-Trypanosoma cruzi varía entre muestras de distinto tipo de suelo, por lo que se buscó determinar en cuales condiciones estas especies presentan mayor actividad biológica. También se encontró que en las diferentes estaciones climáticas de nuestra región las plantas modifican su metabolismo secundario produciendo diferentes compuestos químicos en cantidades también variables. El análisis de los cambios en el perfil metabólico de las plantas se realiza mediante la aplicación de la técnica de metabolómica por Resonancia Magnética Nuclear. Esta técnica permitió identificar los principios activos anti-Trypanosoma cruzi sin previo aislamiento de los mismos. A su vez fue posible identificar las condiciones óptimas para la máxima expresión de los principios activos mediante la aplicación de métodos quimiométricos con la información obtenida en metabolómica por RMN. Utilizando los datos obtenidos mediante metabolómica y realizando el fraccionamiento bioguiado se elucidó la estructura del principio activo de Baccharis articulata, 7-hidroxi-ent-clerodan-3-en-l6-lacton-18-al. También se realizó la estandarización del cultivo de Baccharis spp. mediante clonación por esqueje, donde se observó que la técnica empleada es eficaz para la multiplicación y estandarización de cultivos de Baccharis trimera y Baccharis usterii. Los resultados obtenidos indican que plantas de nuestras región podrían ser fuente de nuevos agentes anti-Trypanosoma cruzi para utilizar en el tratamiento de la enfermedad de Chagas.

Formal reductive amination has been a main focus of biocatalysis research in recent times. Among the enzymes able to perform this transformation, pyridoxal-5′-phosphate-dependent transaminases have shown the greatest promise in terms of extensive substrate scope and industrial application. Despite concerted research efforts in this area, there exist relatively few options regarding efficient amino donor co-substrates capable of allowing high conversion and atom efficiency with stable enzyme systems. Herein we describe the implementation of the recently described spuC gene, coding for a putrescine transaminase, exploiting its unusual amine donor tolerance to allow use of inexpensive and readily-available n-butylamine as an alternative to traditional methods. Via the integration of SpuC homologues with tandem co-product removal and cofactor regeneration enzymes, high conversion could be achieved with just 1.5 equivalents of the amine with products displaying excellent enantiopurity.

Consumers’ perceptions of the quality of fresh produce at the point of purchase and point of consumption play an important role in decisions about what to buy, eat and discard. Apple images were used to assess the extent that defects (bruising, splitting, and crushing) attracted consumers’ visual attention as measured using eye tracking and related to choices to buy and to eat the apples. For an internal defect (internal browning and cavities) that is usually only evident after biting into the apples, images were used to determine whether consumers would discard a portion or all of the apple and to assess their perceived quality and sensory expectations using a RATA question. Eye-tracking demonstrated that damage to the exterior of apples and internal browning rapidly attracted consumers’ visual attention. Choice of apples with external defects at both point-of-purchase and point-of-consumption was low and ranging from 0% to 7% and 3.4 to 15.1%, respectively. Consumer decisions to discard apples with internal browning was nuanced in that (1) small amounts of browning did not lead to disposal, (2) when the relative area of browning reached 8.2% then 50% of consumers would throw away a portion of each apple, and (3) when browning was more severe (34.6% relative area) then 50% of the consumers indicated that they would throw away the whole apple. The presence of internal browning lowered consumers’ perceived quality and sensory expectations, as evidenced by the increase in RATA ratings of negative terms (e.g., disgusting, rotten, bruised, mealy) and the lowered RATA ratings for the terms natural and healthy. From a perspective of reducing food waste, the results stress that strategies are needed to increase value perception of defective fruits to increase likely purchase and consumption.

The study explored attitudinal and socio-demographic differences between potential buyers and non-buyers of lettuce grown in a vertical farming (VF) system. Data were col lected from people (n = 2193) in four countries—United States, Germany, Singapore, and Australia. Survey results demonstrated a clear link between positive VF attitude and intention to buy, and similarly for negative attitude and intention to not buy. A key differ ence between people with “lower” and “higher” purchase likelihood (more or less than 50% probability) was that the former were consistently less positive about the benefits of VF. The consumer groups largely perceived the disadvantages of VF similarly. Socio economic differences between the consumer groups related to country of living and hav ing children below the age of 18 living at home. The latter significantly increased the likeli hood that consumers would classify a having “higher” purchase likelihood for VF-grown lettuce. German participants were less likely to have a “higher” purchase likelihood.

<p>Se utiliza un metódo de cálculo, basado en los productos escalar y vectorial de versores dirigidos a lo largo de una poligonal trazada sobre los enlaces de una molécula plana, para realizar una rutina de cálculo, en FORTRAN IV, que permite determinar las coordenadas de todos los átomos y las distancias entre un átomo dado y todos los demás, aparte de otros parámetros geométricos.</p>
<p>En el cálculo, se hace uso de los elementos de simetría de la molécula en cuestión.</p>
<p>La subrturina se probó en el Sistea IBM 360/44 del Centro de Computación de la Universidad, estando integrada actualmente a nuestros progrmas de cálculos mécanico-cuánticos.</p>

<p>Se construye un método sistemático de cálculo de las coordenadas atómicas en moléculas tridimensionales. </p>
<p>Se utilizan versores dirigidos a lo largo de los enlaces, un sistema de coordenadas esféricas asociadas a cada átomo y operaciones de simetría.</p>
<p>La subrutina Fortran programada se probó en el Sistema IBM 360/44 del Centro de Computación de la Universidad. Este cálculo de coordenadas se utiliza luego en los programas de química cuántica.</p>
