<p>Despite its many documented advantages, the<br />QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged,<br />and Safe) sample preparation approach has<br />problems with a few unstable pesticides, partly<br />due to the exothermic reaction generated by the<br />use of anhydrous magnesium sulfate (anh. MgSO4) during extraction. These pesticides also tend to be difficult to analyze by GC/MS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature during the extraction process in a revised version of AOAC Official MethodSM 2007.01 using anh. MgSO4 ≥99% (fine powder) or ≥97% (granular) purity, and the use of an ice bath for particular unstable pesticides of interest (chlorothalonil, captan, captafol, folpet,<br />and the degradation products cis-1,2,3,6-<br />tetrahydrophthalimide and phthalimide). Recoveries of 38 representative pesticides were measured in limes and broccoli at different extraction conditions by LC/MS/MS and low-pressure GC/MS/MS. Results showed that the difference in temperature when using ≥99% versus ≥97% purity anh. MgSO4 was 6–9°C, which did not lead to significant differences in recoveries. The use of an ice bath aided recovery for some of the analytes in broccoli, but no significant differences were observed for limes, which already provided greater stability of the base-sensitive analytes due to acidity of the matrix.</p>

<p>Marine natural products1 play an important role in drug development particularly in anticancer, antibiotics and antiparasitics drugs.2 Various bioactive cyanobacterial compounds exhibit unique structural features like cyclic peptides containing azole heterocycles. 3 It is well known that macrocyclic peptides can demonstrate drug-like physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties such as good metabolic stability, solubility, lipophilicity and bioavailability.4 In addition, asymmetrical cyclopeptides are considered as new scaffolds for supramolecular chemistry and provides an important method for the development and preparation of nanoscale objects.5 Examples of azole cyclopeptides are aerucyclamide B (1),6 dendroamide A (2),7 and venturamide A (3),8 Figure 1. Aerucyclamide B was isolated in 2008 by Gademann and co-workers from the toxic freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 and displays potent and selective antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum K1. This species is the most virulent of the genus Plasmodium and causes more than 95% of malaria-related morbidity and mortality. According to the World Health Organization 2011 report, there were an estimated 216 million episodes and 655000 deaths of malaria in 2010.9 Various antimalarial drugs are presently used for the treatment of this tropical disease, but the rapid spread of resistance seriously compromises their efficacy.10</p>

A summary of the resource.
<p>The dehydration of several sugars, including pentoses, hexoses, di, tri, and polysaccharides, in ionic liquids with acidic ion-exchange resins as heterogeneous catalysts was investigated. Good 2‐furaldehydes recovery yields, reaching 92% in some cases, were achieved when Dowex® 50W ion‐exchange resins and 1‐n‐butyl‐3‐ methylimidazoliumchloride ([C4mim]Cl)were used. Our results show that this aproach could represent a promising route towards the cost-efficient production of 2-furaldehydes from carbohydrate-based feedstocks</p>

A summary of the resource.
<p>Sensory descriptive analysis is one of the most powerful, sophisticated and most extensively used tools in sensory science, which provides a complete description of the sensory characteristics of food products. Considering the economic and time consuming aspects of training assessor panels for descriptive analysis, several novel methodologies for sensory characterization have been developed in the last ten years. These methodologies are less time consuming, more flexible and can be used with semi trained assessors and even consumers, providing sensory maps very close to a classic descriptive analysis with highly trained panels. Novel techniques are based on different approaches: methods based on the evaluation of individual attributes (intensity scales, check-all-that-apply questions or CATA, flash profiling, paired comparisons); methods based on the evaluation of global differences (sorting, projective mapping or Napping®); methods based on the comparison with product references (polarized sensory positioning), and based on a free, global evaluation of the individual products (Open-ended questions). This review aims at reviewing theory, implementation, advantages and disadvantages of the novel product profiling techniques developed in the last ten years, discussing recommendations for their application.</p>

<p>In this study, optimization, extension, and validation of a streamlined, qualitative and quantitative multiclass, multiresidue method was conducted to monitor >100 veterinary drug residues in meat using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). Optimization centered on extensive ruggedness evaluation of the method. Various clean-up sorbents were tested and the amount of co-extractives were weighed, matrix effects were measured using post-column infusion of representative analytes, the effect of extract dilution before injecting was studied, and analyte recoveries and reproducibilities were determined. In order to extend our previous method, more drug analytes were added that possessed a wider range of chemical properties, and a re-appraisal of different types of C18 in dispersive solid-phase extraction clean-up and mobile phases in UHPLC–MS/MS was done. Ultimately, end-capped C18 and post-column infusion of ammonium formate as an ionization enhancer for the late-eluting anthelmintics were found to give improved qualitative results for greater analytical scope. A multi-day, multi-analyst validation demonstrated that the final method is suitable for screening of 113 analytes, identifying 98 and quantifying (recoveries between 70–120% and RSD < 25%) 87 out of the 127 tested drugs at or below US regulatory tolerance levels in bovine muscle</p>

<p>The presence of Stone–Wales, single and double vacancy defect sites in bilayer graphene was studied by means of dispersion corrected density functional theory. Based on the analysis of the formation energies computed for monolayer and bilayer graphene, monovacancies are expected to be equally frequent in both materials. In the case of the single vacancy, the formation energy is barely affected by the second layer and so does the interlayer interaction energy. However, Stone–Wales and double vacancies may be expected to be more frequent in single layer graphene because their formation energies are expected to be lower as compared to bilayer graphene. Calculations employing very large unit cells would be interesting to reduce the effect of the incommensurability of the unit cells of perfect and defective graphene, and thus confirm the latter statement. The single and double vacancies have the similar formation energy in bilayer graphene but for monolayer graphene, the 5-8-5 divacancy is more stable by at least 0.7 eV, in contrast with recent results. The electronic properties of defective bilayer graphene are similar to those corresponding to monolayer graphene. Finally, we have shown that the magnetic moment of monolayer graphene with a monovacancy is smaller than that of bilayer graphene bearing the same defect, when the unit cell is optimized. Yet, if the unit cells are fixed, different outcomes can be obtained. If the unit cell of perfect graphene is employed the magnetic moment of bilayer graphene with a single vacancy is larger, but if the unit cell of monolayer graphene with a single vacancy is to be employed the magnetic moment of defective bilayer graphene becomes smaller than that of monolayer graphene with a monovacancy</p>

<p>A family of chiral conduritol-derivative carboxamides was synthesized through palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of diastereoisomeric bromocyclohexenetetraols, previously prepared through biotransformation of bromobenzene by mutant strains of Pseudomonas putida F39/D. The coupling reactions of bromocyclohexenetetraols with CO and different amines, such as tert-butylamine, aniline, and piperidine, were performed in the presence of in situ generated Pd(0)/PPh3 catalyst. The methodology was applied to the corresponding iodo-cyclohexenetetraol derivative, using (L)-alanine and (L)-valine methyl ethers as N-nucleophiles. The resulting carboxamides were obtained in highly chemoselective reactions, isolated, and fully characterized</p>

<p>Photolysis of 1,2-dithiane (1) in acetonitrile with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was earlier reported to form thiolfunctionalized SWCNTs via the butane-1,4-dithiyl diradical (2). The present study shows that 2 instead undergoes a facile rearrangement to thiophane-2-thiol (6). This photoreaction is clean, rapid, and irreversible under 313 nm irradiation. The secondary photolysis of 6 with SWCNTs at a shorter wavelength (254 nm) leads to 2-thiophanyl radicals 8, which derivatize SWCNTs by covalent attachment. Pyrolysis of the resulting “sulfurized SWCNTs” affords a mixture of organosulfur compounds, including thiophene formed by dehydrogenation. An unknown additional mechanism causes high TGA weight loss and a large incorporation of sulfur. ■ INTRODUCTION Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been functionalized by a variety of methods,1−6 many of which involve free radicals.7−18 In 2006 and 2007, Nakamura and coworkers19,20 published an unusual functionalization approach based upon biradicals. Irradiation of cyclic disulfides, e.g., 1 generated dithiyl biradicals 2, which were claimed to attack SWCNTs and produce thiol-functionalized SWCNTs 4, as illustrated in Figure 1. A summary of the resource.
<p>Liquid-phase oxidation of limonene was performed with molecular oxygen as the sole oxidizing agent under non-solvent conditions. The oxidation took place under atmospheric pressure and temperatures between 70 and 90 �C in the presence of three different nickel–aluminium hydrotalcites. The final limonene conversion at 80 �C and 6 h of reaction time was comprised between 40 and 50 %. Several oxygenated limonene derivatives such as endo- and exo-epoxides, carveol and carvone represent 45–60 % of the whole amount of products. In the absence of a catalyst, a higher initial content of peroxides in limonene lead to a higher reaction rate with no significant changes in product selectivities. Thermal decomposition of limonene peroxides took place as the initiation path of an autooxidation mechanism leading to the different products. The catalyst played an important role in the initial paths involving activation of both reactants as well as in the decomposition of limonene peroxide to form radicals.</p>

A summary of the resource.
Es de particular relevancia poder identificar, en el cancer, los mecanlsmos de estimulo y proliferación celular, con el fin de crear estrategias diagn6sticas y terapeuticas especificamente dirigidas contra dianas ·celulares que participan en estos procesos. El diagnostico in vivo del cancer con agentes que reconocen marcadores tumorales, y que a su vez poseen 6ptimas caracteristicas para obtenci6n de imagenes, proporciona informaci6n fundamental desde el punta de vista clinico, permitiendo asi una correcta selecci6n del tratamiento a seguir y el monitoreo de sus efectos. Anticuerpos y sus fragmentos, entre otros, han sido utilizados para identificar la sobreexpresi6n de marcadores tumorales. Se ha descrito amplificaci6n del gen HER2 en varios tipos de canceres, particularmente en el cancer de mama, con el consiguiente aumento en la expresión de la proteina HER2 en la superficie de las celulas tumorales, que se traduce en un receptor HER2 constitutivamente activado. Los estudios indican que los pacientes cuyos tumores presentan una amplificación o sobreexpresión de HER2 presentan una menor expectativa de vida que la de aquellos con tumores sin amplificaci6n 0 sobreexpresi6n de HER2. Trastuzumab (HERCEPTIN®) es un anticuerpo monoclonal humanizado que reconoce de forma selectiva el dominio extracelular de HER2 y actualmente es utilizado como agente quimioterapeutico al inhibir la proliferaci6n de las celulas tumorales humanas que sobreexpresan HER2. Basandose en la alta especificidad de Trastuzumab por HER2, el objetivo del presente trabajo es desarrollar el radiofarmaco 99mTccHYNIC- Trastuzumab como marcador molecular in vivo de la expresión de HER2 en cancer de mama. En el presente estudio se desarrollo y optimizo la marcación de Trastuzumab con 99mTc, para ello se derivatizó el anticuerpo con el ligando bifuncional HYNIC. Se desarrollaron metodos de control basados en sistemas cromatograficos tanto en ITLC como HPLC, tambien se desarrollo un sistema para estudiar la inmunoafinidad in vitro del anticuerpo marcado. Se realizaron estudios de estabilidad in vivo e invitro, se caracterizó biológicamente la molecula marcada a traves de estudios de biodistribuci6n en ratones CD 1 normales y en portadores de adenocarcinoma mamano espontaneo.

<p>Among the infectious illnesses designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), four illnesses are major health concerns in the developing world: malaria and three parasitic diseases caused by genetically related parasites belonging to the trypanosomatid genus and kinetoplastida order: American trypanosomiasis, human African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. This review focuses on the most relevant efforts carried out to develop ruthenium compounds as potential agents for the treatment of these diseases. Those series of compounds for which especial efforts have been made to modify structures performing a sort of rational design and to identify their molecular targets and mode of action were emphasized. Aspects related with the potentialities and perspectives of ruthenium compounds for this particular inorganic medicinal chemistry field are also included</p>

A summary of the resource.
<p>BiI3 is a semiconductor layered compound of growing interest for direct and digital imaging. This structure determines that bismuth tri-iodide crystals can grow with platelet habit. Thereby, we consider of great importance to study if such structure can determine nanoparticles of this material as well, that means, if such layers can be rolled in order to form nanotubes and/or nanorods. In light of this, the present work reports the synthesis of bismuth tri-iodide nanoparticles by the suspension method. Bi(NO3)3.5H2O, I2 and KI were used as source materials, and 1-octadecene was used as suspension agent. The intermediate and final synthesized compounds were characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results clearly show that BiI3 nanoparticles can be synthesized by the suspension method, which means that the layer structure of these compounds can determine the growth of nanostructures. Nanoparticles of different sizes and morphologies were obtained, depending on the synthesis conditions. There has been not possible to control such conditions in order to obtain uniform size and morphology distributions. The use of these nanostructures may be an interesting way of improving nucleation and further growth of bismuth tri-iodide films</p>
