Governments worldwide are increasingly mandating the inclusion of graphic and textual warnings on the packages and advertisements of processed products with high content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of nutritional warnings on the mental associations raised by advertisements featuring ultra-processed products. An online experiment was performed with a convenience sample of 380 Uruguayan participants. Participants were exposed to either<br />control advertisements or advertisements featuring black octagonal nutritional warnings. Right after watching the advertisements, they were asked to complete a word association task. Responses were grouped into 20 categories following inductive coding. A generalized linear model was used to assess the effect of experimental condition on the likelihood of providing responses within each of the identified categories. Participants exposed to the advertisements with (vs. without) warnings were more likely to provide responses related to NCDs or nutritional warnings. Meanwhile, no significant differences were found in the frequency of mention of categories related to sensory, hedonic, emotional, or social aspects linked to consuming the products between participants<br />exposed to advertisements with and without warnings. These results suggest that nutritional warnings may be a promising strategy to make consumers aware of the nutritional characteristics of ultra-processed products without affecting the ability of advertisements to convey their intended message.

A summary of the resource.
This study is an interdisciplinary research into Uruguayan ayahuasca users belonging to one neoshamanic and one Santo Daime group. The study involved the chemical analysis of ayahuasca samples, an ethnographic description of the two traditions and rituals, and the application of psychometric scales to measure personality differences, and the acute psychological effects during an ayahuasca ritual. Personality measurements showed lower scores for Santo Daime in Neuroticism-Anxiety, Dependence, Low Self-Esteem, Anger and Restlessness. These differences may be related to the presence of participants under treatment in the neo-shamanic group and/or to the protective effects of a church religion such as Santo Daime. Regarding acute effects, the neoshamanic group showed higher scores in Somesthesia and Perception, which can be related to the high-arousal ritual setting. Chemical analysis for the ayahuasca samples showed a typical composition of alkaloids. No adulterants were found. The sample from the neo-shamanic group displayed a higher β-carbolines:DMT ratio compared to the Santo Daime sample, which could be related to the higher effects observed for Somesthesia for the neo-shamanic group. Significant positive correlations between some personality traits and acute effects were found only in the neoshamanic group, which may be related to the more individualistic approach of this tradition.

Abstract

Complexes with general formula [RuCl(η6-p-cymene)(P-NR-P)]X (R = CH2Py (Py = pyridine)-[1a]+, CH2Ph (Ph = phenyl)-[1b]+, Ph-[1c] and p-tol (p-tol = p-tolyl)-[1d]+; X = PF6- or BF4-) were evaluated as cytotoxic agents against two cancer cell lines (HeLa and MDA-MB-231). All metal complexes are active in the range of concentrations tested (up to 100 μmol L-1). The IC50 (μmol L-1) values for the metal complexes are lower than that found for cisplatin. The activities are up to 6- and 15-fold higher than cisplatin for HeLa and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines, respectively. Studies of DNA binding and DNA cleavage were performed. DNA binding studies revealed a modest hypochromic shift in the metal complexes electronic spectra, indicating a weak interaction with Kb values in the range of 1.7 × 103-1.6 × 104. Although the cleavage tests revealed that in the dark DNA is not a biological target for these metal complexes, upon blue light irradiation they are activated causing DNA cleavage. Electrochemical studies showed the presence of two independent redox processes, one attributed to the oxidation process of Ru2+ → Ru3+ (EC process) and the other one to the reduction of Ru2+ → Ru1+, which is further reduced to Ru0 (ECE mechanism). In both processes, coupled chemical reactions were observed. DFT calculations were performed to support the electrochemical/chemical behavior of the complexes. The reactivity of complex [1b]BF4 with CH3CN was evaluated and two complexes were isolated [2b]BF4 and [3b]BF4. The complex mer-[RuCl(CH3CN)3(P-NCH2Ph-P)]BF4 ([2b]BF4) was isolated after refluxing the precursor [1b]BF4 in CH3CN. Isomerization of [2b]BF4 in CH3CN resulted in the formation of fac-[RuCl(CH3CN)3(P-NCH2Ph-P)]BF4. An attempt to isolate the fac-isomer by adding diethyl ether was unsuccessful, and the complex [3b]BF4 was observed as the major component. The complex [Ru2(μ-Cl3)(CH3CN)2(P-NCH2Ph-P)2]BF4 ([3b]BF4) proved to be very stable and can be obtained from both the mer- and the fac-isomers. The molecular structures of [1b]BF4 and [3b]BF4 were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Tropical fruits, such as cashew apple, acerola, and melon, can be used to obtain innovative juices with high contents of bioactive compounds. Technological processes are needed to ensure the safety of products during their shelf life. However, these processes can modify the sensory properties of the juice, which have an important role in consumer acceptance. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate consumer perception of the sensory characteristics of tropical mixed juice based on cashew apple, acerola, and melon obtained using different processing methods during cold storage at 4◦ C. Microbiological aspects were monitored during refrigerated storage at 4 ◦C. Samples were exposed to four technological processes: control (unprocessed), pasteurization (90 ◦C/1 min), and high-pressure processing: HHP1 (500 MPa/5 min) and HHP2 (520 MPa/2<br />min). Thirty fruit juice consumers participated in the characterization of mixed juices using rate-all-that-apply (RATA) questions. Samples were analyzed at zero, 14, and 28 days of storage at 4 ◦C. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, and Fisher’s test was used for post-hoc comparison of means and PCA. Results showed that 12 of the 22 RATA terms differed (p ≤ 0.05) regarding the mean perceived intensity, suggesting that consumers perceived<br />differences in the sensory characteristics of the juices. The first dimension of the PCA separated the pasteurized juices from the others. Pasteurized samples were characterized by yellow color, cooked aroma, cooked flavor, off aroma, off flavor, stale aroma, and stale flavor. On the other hand, the unprocessed (control) and pressurized (HPP1 and HPP2) juices were characterized by orange color, fruit aroma, fruit flavor, sweet aroma, fresh juice, and watery consistency. Results confirmed the suitability of the sensory characterization performed by consumers using RATA and the potential of HHP to obtain juices with sensory characteristics similar to the fresh product.

In this work, we report a part of a systematic study of the influence of the synthesis routes on the properties of polycrystalline samples of PrxY1−xBa2Cu3O7−δ. We have prepared high-quality samples of this material by following a sol–gel method, associated with heat treatment in both an inert argon and an oxygen atmospheres in order to compare their influence on the formation of the superconducting phase. Magnetic measurement (AC susceptibility) show that the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases in samples prepared in argon when compared to those prepared in oxygen, for the same composition and Pr fraction less than 0.5. In addition to this, preliminary results of AC and DC magnetic susceptibility show superconductivity for samples with Pr fraction higher than 0.5 (and up to 0.9) prepared under argon flux, which may indicate the existence of stable superconductivity for all compositions, including pure Pr-123.

We report on unusual magnetic properties observed for nanofluid room temperature ferromagnetic graphite (with an average particle size of l � 10 nm). More precisely, the measured magnetization exhibits a low temperature anomaly (attributed to the manifestation of finite size effects below the quantum temperature Tl ∝ ¯h2/l2) as well as pronounced temperature oscillations above T = 50 K (attributed to manifestation of the hard-sphere type of pair correlations between ferromagnetic particles in the nanofluid).

A summary of the resource.
The existence of superconductivity in samples of PrBa2Cu3O7−δ (Pr-123) is still a polemic subject. To further study this problem, we have prepared high-quality polycrystalline Pr-123 samples by following a sol-gel method, associated with heat treatment in inert atmosphere. In this paper we report the structural, thermal and magnetic properties of superconducting sintered-polycrystalline Pr-123 and give a descriptive explanation about its unique dependence on the preparation procedure. The list of evidences of superconductivity in Pr-123 is further expanded with new data on a superconducting thin film. The present results confirming the occurrence of superconductivity in Pr-123 revitalizes the hypothesis that superconductivity originates outside the cuprate-plane

A summary of the resource.
<p>Se hace cultivo de tejido vegetal, tomando como matrial rodajas de Daucus Carota, que se siembra en tubos de ensayo, Erlembeyer y cajas de Petri, utilizando técnicas y medios de cultivos aconsejados por Gautheret, con el propósito de hacer fisiología y genética vegetal con orientación bioquímica.</p>
<p>Dada la contaminación ambiental de nuestro medio partiendo de implementos y medios de cultivo esterilizados por autoclave las manipulaciones de siembra, repicados y cierre de los recipientes , se hace dentro de cámara provista de dos tubos estéril lamp. Westinghouse, habiéndose determinado que para su esteriización es suficiente la radiación de ultravioleta durante 15 minutos.</p>
<p>Se hacen cinco series de cultivos que son repicados a los sesenta y nueve y ochenta y un día de siembra.</p>
<p>Macroscópicamente de siete a nueve días se observa el crecimiento de la zona de tejido cambial en brotos color blanquesino que pasan al verde por acción de la luz.</p>
<p>Se hace histología en cortes sin colorear, reacciones microquímicas y tinción con técnica Carmín-Verde iodo, modificada diluyendo al tercio la mezcla colorante y reduciendo a un minuto el tiempo de coloración.</p>
<p>Las observaciones revelan similitud morfológica y química del tejido neoformando con el originario y se superponen a la descripción citológica de Gautheret (6) 1938.</p>
<p>La diferenciación está representada por la anarquía del ordenamiento celular, que en algunos aspectos objetivamente modifica la representación química de sus constituyentes, aunque no afecta las etapas evolutivas del crecimiento tisular presentes en el tejido normal originario.</p>

A summary of the resource.
<p>In continuation our effort to research the chemical space of aryloxy-naphthoquinones as potential anti-Chagas agents, we synthesized nine derivatives and these compounds were evaluated in vitro against the epimastigote and trypomastigote forms of Mexican strains of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). Most of these derivatives are highly active against epimastigote forms (IC50 < 1.0 μM) compared to the reference drug benznidazole (Bzn). Then these were evaluated on trypomastigotes, which is showing better potency results than Bzn for compounds 3b and 3g. In addition, the cytotoxicity of these compounds was determined on the murine macrophage cell line J774. 3b and 3i were the most selective compounds<br />against NINOA trypomastigote and INC-5 epimastigote forms, respectively. Further these compounds also have good oral bioavailability according to theoretical predictions. Finally, we were able to determine optimal substitution patterns using pharmacophoric models. All these results are provided very useful structural information to continue our designing of naphthoquinone derivatives against T. cruzi.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>The aim of the present study was to develop a mixed tropical fruit juice of cashew apple, acerola and melon with low added-sugar content considering sensory and nutritional aspects. Five formulations were developed varying the concentration of the different fruits. A total of 172 consumers rated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and described their sensory characteristics using a Check-all-that-apply question. In addition, the functional properties of the juices were evaluated by analyzing vitamin C, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. Results showed that the addition of sugar and fruit composition affected the sensory characteristics and consumer liking of the formulations. Samples without added sugar and with higher melon concentration showed lower liking scores (p<0.05). In addition, the highest concentration of acerola had a positive effect on nutritional characteristics. The formulation with 50% of fruit pulp (60% of cashew apple,<br />30% of acerola and 10% of melon), 47% of water, and 3% of added sugar achieved the best results. The effect of aroma on sweetness perception was investigated by adding identical to natural aromas of melon, apple and pineapple to the selected formulation. However, aroma did not significantly modify sweetness perception, evaluated using a rate-all-that-apply question.</p>

Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining health and quality of life in old age. Therefore, strategies aimed at improving diet quality are highly relevant. The objective of this work was to evaluate the relative effect of frontof- package warning labels on the food choices of consumers over 60 years of age living in Brazil. A total of 1125 participants over 60 years old were recruited using an Instagram advertisement. They were randomly allocated to four experimental groups, defined considering two 2-level variables: type of warning label (black magnifier vs. black octagon) and information about warning labels (with information vs. no information). Participants in each of the four groups completed a choice-conjoint task involving pairs of product categories (cream cheese, juice, toasts, and yogurt) differing in four variables: commercial “Brand” (familiar vs. unfamiliar), “Nutrition claims” (present vs. absent), “Sensory claims” (present vs. absent) and “Warning label” (present vs. absent). Data were analyzed using mixed logit models. Results revealed a significant effect of type of warning label in some categories, with the magnifier being more effective than the octagon in discouraging unhealthy food choices. However, “Brand” was the most relevant variable and, in some categories, “Nutrition claims” outweighed the effect of “Warning labels”. Exposure to information about the warnings prior to the choice-task reduced the importance of the “Brand” and tended to increase the effect of the “Warnings labels” and “Nutrition claims”. These results highlight the need to implement strategies to promote the use of warnings among older consumers.

We report the structural, thermal and magnetic properties of superconducting PrBa�Cu�O��� (Pr-123). The existence of superconductivity in samples of Pr-123 is still a polemic subject. To further study this problem, we have measured thin "lms and high-quality polycrystalline bulk samples by following a sol}gel method, associated with heat treatment in argon atmosphere. The present results con"rm the occurrence of superconductivity in Pr-123 polycrystalline and thin "lm samples.

Cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance techniques were used in the investigation of several potential antiprotozoal containing thiosemicarbazone and carbamate nitrofurans. In the electrochemical behaviour, a self-protonation process involving the nitro group was observed. The reactivity of the nitro anion radical for these derivatives with glutathione, a biological relevant thiol, was also studied in means of cyclic voltammetry. These studies demonstrated that glutathione could react with radical species from 5-nitrofuryl system. Furthermore, from the voltammetric results, some parameters of biological significance as E1 7 (indicative of the biological nitro anion radical formation), and KO2 (thermodynamic indicator the of oxygen redox cycling) have been calculated. We also evaluated the stability of the nitro anion radical in terms of the dimerization constant (kd). The nitrofuran-free radicals from cyclic voltammetry were characterized by electron spin resonance. A clear dependence between both the thiosemicarbazone or carbamate substructure and the length of the linker, furyl- or furylpropenyl-spacer, and the delocalization of the unpaired electron was observed. Through of biological assays we obtained important parameters that account for the selective antitrypanosomal activity of these derivatives. The trypomastigote viability study showed that all derivatives are as active as in the epimastigote form of the parasite in a doses dependent manner

In the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus, three phylogenetically distant cytosolic glutathione transferases (GSTs) (EgGST1, 2 and 3) were identified. Interestingly, the C-terminal domains of EgGST3 and EgGST2 but not EgGST1, exhibit all amino acids involved in Sigma-class GST dimerization. Here, we provide evidence indicating that EgGST2 and EgGST3 naturally form a heterodimeric structure (EgGST2-3), and also we report the enzymatic activity of the recombinant heterodimer. EgGST2-3 might display novel properties able to influence the infection establishment. This is the first report of a stable heterodimeric GST built up by phylogenetically distant subunits.

Glutathione transferases (GSTs) comprise a major detoxification system in helminth parasites, displaying both catalytic and non-catalytic activities. The kinetic mechanism of these enzymes is complex and depends on the isoenzyme which is being analyzed. Here, we characterized the kinetic mechanism of rEgGST1, a recombinant form of a cytosolic GST from Echinococcus granulosus (EgGST1), which is related to the Mu-class of mammalian enzymes, using the canonical substrates glutathione (GSH) and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB). Initial rate and product inhibition studies were consistent with a steady-state random sequential mechanism, where both substrates are bound to the enzyme before the products are released. Kinetic constants were also determined (pH 6.5 and 30 °C). Moreover, rEgGST1 lowered the pKa of GSH from 8.71 ± 0.07 to 6.77 ± 0.08, and enzyme-bound GSH reacted with CDNB 1 × 105 times faster than free GSH at pH 7.4. Finally, the dissociation of the enzyme-GSH complex was studied by means of intrinsic fluorescence, as well as that of the complex with the anthelminth drug mebendazole. This is the first report on mechanistic issues related to a helminth parasitic GST.

Las glutation transferasas (GSTs) son una superfamilia de protefnas multifuncionales que cumplen funciones esenciales en la detoxificacion de compuestos tanto endogenos como exogenos. Las GSTs pueden ser c1asificadas en cuatro familias, siendo las citosolicas las estudiadas en mayor profundidad. En parasites helmintos se identificaron varias GSTs citosolicas con roles clave para su sobrevida en el hospedero. Asimismo, no solo la actividad detoxificante es importante sino que las GSTs, particularmente las de c1ase Sigma, estan implicadas en procesos de inmunomodulacion a traves de su actividad prostaglandina sintasa. En este sentido, es de nuestro interes caracterizar este grupo de enzimas en el parasito Echinococcus granulosus. Particularmente, este trabajo describe la identificaci6n y c1asificacion de • una nueva GST de E. granulosus (EgGST2), 105 avances en la caracterizacion cinetica de EgGSTl tipificada previamente y por ultimo, 105 estudios de expresion de las tres EgGSTs identificadas al momento. A partir del transcriptoma de larva de E. granulosus publicado se obtuvo la secuencia de EgGST2. En la Seccion I se muestra la tipificacion de EgGST2. Los estudios de funcion catalftica ubican a EgGST2 indudablemente como miembro de la c1ase Sigma. Por otro lade, se presenta el trabajo orientado a la produccion de la protefna recombinante enzimaticamente activa y finalmente se muestra que la protefna se expresa en protoescolex de E. granulosus. La enzima EgGSTl fue previa mente estudiada por nuestro grupo de trabajo donde se demostro que pertenece a la c1ase Mu. Por otro lado, se realizaron estudios bioqufmicos de la enzima recombinante, donde se analizo el panel de actividades que presenta asf como sus parametros enzimaticos. En la Seccion 1\ se presenta la profundizacion de la caracterizacion cinetica de EgGST1. En este contexto, se realizaron estudios de velocidades iniciales y de inhibicion por producto, cuyos resultados muestran que EgGSTl sigue un mecanisme secuencial aleatorio concordante con las GSTs de mamffero de c1ase Mu descritas. Por otro lado, se determine la constante de disociacion para cada uno de 105 sustratos por analisis de union en equilibrio. Finalmente, experimentos de pH permitieron acceder al pKa del tiolato del GSH en el complejo binario enzima - GSH, siendo este resultado acorde con 10 reportado para las GST que presentan una Tyr catalftica. En ultimo lugar, en la Seccion III, se exponen 105 estudios de expresion de las tres GST identificadas al momento en E. granulosus. Primero, se presenta el analisis bioinformatico de las regiones 5' flanqueantes de 105 tres genes donde se identificaron elementos relacionados con la regulacion de enzimas detoxificantes. Por otro lado, se observo que las tres isoformas presentan una expresion diferencial a nivel del ARN • mensajero cuando 105 protoescolex son expuestos a condiciones de estres oxidativo 0 xenobioticos in vitro. Finalmente, se estudio la expresion de las EgGSTs en el contexto de la infeccion secunda ria murina temprana. EI conjunto de estes resultados pretende contribuir al entendimiento de la interrelacion hospedero - parasite a partir del entendimiento del rol biologico de este versatil grupo de enzimas detoxificantes.

<p>Glutathione transferases (GSTs) belong to a diverse superfamily of multifunctional proteins involved in metabolic detoxification. In helminth parasite, GSTs are particularly relevant since they are also involved in host immunomodulation. Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a cestode parasite known to express at least three phylogenetically distant cytosolic GSTs: EgGST1 and EgGST2 previously grouped within Mu and Sigma classes, respectively; and EgGST3 related to both Omega and Sigma classes. To better characterize E. granulosus s.l. GSTs, herein their expression and distribution were assessed in the pre-adult protoscolex (PSC) parasite stage. Potential transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of the corresponding EgGST genes were also explored. Firstly, the transcription of the three EgGSTs was significantly induced during the early stages of the murine model of infection, suggesting a potential role during parasite establishment. EgGST1 was detected in the parenchyma of PSCs and its expression increased after H2O2 exposure, supporting its role in detoxification. EgGST2 was mainly detected on the PSCs tegument, strategically localized for potential immunoregulation functions due to its Sigma-class characteristics. In addition, its expression increased after anthelmintic treatment, suggesting a role in chemotherapy<br />resistance. Finally, the Omega-related EgGST3 was localized throughout the entire PSC body, including suckers and tegument, and since its expression also increased after H2O2 treatment, a potential role in oxidative stress response could also be ascribed. On the other hand, known cis-acting regulatory motifs were detected in EgGST genes, suggesting similar transcription processes to other eukaryotes. The results herein reported provide additional data regarding the roles of EgGSTs in E. granulosus s.l. biology, contributing to a better understanding of its host-parasite interaction.</p>

Cystic echinococcosis, a zoonosis caused by cestodes belonging to the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) genetic complex, affects humans and diverse livestock species. Although a veterinary vaccine exhibiting high levels of antibody-mediated protection has successfully reached the market, the large genetic diversity among parasite isolates and their particular host preferences, makes still necessary the search for novel vaccine candidates. Glutathione transferases (GSTs) constitute attractive targets for immunoprophylaxis due to their outstanding relevance in helminth detoxification processes, against both exogenous and endogenous stressors. Among the six GSTs known to be expressed in E. granulosus s.l., EgGST1 (Mu-class), EgGST2 (Sigma-class), and EgGST3 (a still non-classifiable isoenzyme), show the highest proteomic expression. Therefore, their recombinant forms -rEgGST1, rEgGST2 and rEgGST3- were herein analyzed regarding their potential to induce long-term antiparasite protection in mice. Only immunization with rEgGST1 induced long-lasting protection; and accordingly, rEgGST1-specific antibodies enhanced the parasite killing through both the classical activation of the host complement system and the antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity by macrophages. These results support further testing of rEgGST1 as a vaccine candidate in diverse hosts due to the broad expression of EgGST1 in different parasite stages and tissues.
