<p>Biocontrol agents such as parasitic wasps use long-range volatiles and host-associated cues from lower trophic levels to<br />find their hosts. However, this chemical landscape may be altered by the invasion of exotic insect species. The spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a highly polyphagous fruit pest native to eastern Asia and recently arrived in South America. Our study aimed to characterize the effect of SWD attack on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of blueberries, a common host fruit, and to correlate these odor changes with the olfactory-mediated behavioral response of resident populations of Trichopria anastrephae parasitoids, here reported for the first time in Uruguay. Using fruit VOC chemical characterization followed by multivariate analyses of the odor blends of blueberries attacked by SWD, we showed that the development of SWD immature stages inside the fruit generates a different odor profile to that from control fruits (physically damaged and free of damage). These differences can be explained by the diversity, frequency, and amounts of fruit VOCs. The behavioral response of T. anastrephae in Y-tube bioassays showed that female wasps were significantly attracted to volatiles from SWD-attacked blueberries when tested against both clean air and undamaged blueberries. Therefore, T. anastrephae females can use chemical cues from SWD-infested fruits, which may lead to a successful location of their insect host. Since resident parasitoids are able to locate this novel potential host, biological control programs using local populations may be plausible as a strategy for control of SWD.</p>

<p>The present research contributed to the growing body of research regarding the use of emoji in sensory and consumer research by filling an acknowledged knowledge gap. Its specific aim was to explore the meaning of emoji in a food-related context. The empirical approach involved 357 consumers who were tasked with writing a social media post or text message relating to a situation involving eating/drinking which was to be centered around a specific emoji. A total of 21 facial emoji were<br />included in the research. As expected, emoji were used to convey different meanings, including degree of liking/disliking, emotional associations, gestures and expressions.<br />The emoji were also used as part of messages describing negative and positive disconfirmation of expectations, which points to the importance of measuring expectations in a food-related context. Two emoji were identified as unsuitable for future research due to their nonconsensual meaning ( and ).</p>

<p>As nutritional recommendations change, new marketing strategies are expected to appear on food labels to convey the idea that products are healthful and aligned with the recommendations. In this context, the objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of references to ‘home-made’, images of natural foods and nutritional warnings on consumers’ healthfulness perception and purchase intention of labels of ultra-processed products with excessive content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The study was conducted with 790 Uruguayan Facebook users (65% female, 18–89 years old), diverse in terms of educational and<br />socio-economic levels. A choice experiment involving labels of four categories of ultra-processed products (burgers, cookies, instant soup and instant vanilla milk custard) was implemented. For each product category, eight sets of two labels differing in the presence of references to home-made, images of natural foods and nutritional warnings were designed. Half of the participants were asked to indicate the healthier product,<br />whereas the other half were asked to indicate the product they would purchase. Data were analyzed using mixed logit models. The inclusion of references to home-made and images of natural foods on the labels had a positive effect on purchase intention and tended to create the belief that products were healthful. Nutritional warnings decreased healthfulness perception and discouraged participants’ choice. In three of the product categories images of natural foods created a health halo that reduced the effect of nutritional warnings on product choice. Results from the present work suggest the need to develop stricter labelling regulations for ultra-processed<br />products with high content of nutrients associated with NCDs.</p>

<p>The aim of the present work was twofold: (i) to evaluate the effect of nutritional warnings and health-related packaging cues (nutrient claim and images of natural foods) on consumers’ food choices, and (ii) to evaluate the influence of two types of messages (gain-framed and loss-framed) aimed at encouraging the use of such warnings and packaging cues on food choices. A total of 510 participants were recruited using an advertisement on Facebook and Instagram targeted at Uruguayan adult users. Participants were randomly allocated to one of three experimental groups: control (n = 167), loss-framed messages (n = 177) and gain-framed messages (n = 166). Then, they completed a choice-conjoint task involving packages of crackers differing in three variables: nutritional warnings (present vs. absent), nutrient claim (present vs. absent) and images of seeds and wheat (present vs. absent). Warnings were the most relevant package element driving choices, even when participants were not exposed to any type of message. Exposure to loss-framed messages led to changes in the relative importance attached to the package characteristics, whereas gain-framed messages did not. Graphic pieces conveying messages encouraging the use of nutritional warnings by stressing the negative consequences of excessive consumption of sugar, fat, and sodium increased the relative importance attached to nutritional warnings and decreased the relative importance attached to health-related cues (nutrient claims and images of seeds and wheat). These results suggest that public awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging citizens to use nutritional warnings should emphasize the negative health consequences of excessive intake of sugar, fat, and<br />sodium.</p>

Eight samples of liquid hand soap were obtained following a full factorial design with three 2-level variables: fragrance (herbal vs. fruity), color (green vs. orange), and transparency (transparent vs. pearly).<br />Samples were evaluated by 104 female participants, who rated their liking and used a<br />check-all-that-apply question to describe the samples in terms of sensory characteristics,<br />expected functional aspects of the product, and conceptual associations. Results showed that appearance and transparency did not influence consumer liking. However, fragrance had a significant effect on consumer liking, expectations and conceptual associations of liquid hand soap. The effect of fragrance on expectations and<br />conceptual associations depended on consumer liking of the fragrance. In addition, pearly appearance did not influence liking but had a significant effect on consumer expectations regarding functional aspects of the liquid hand soap.

<p>CATA (check-all-that-apply) questions enjoy high popularity for sensory product characterization with consumers. Amidst extensive methodological characterization, the meaning of term citation frequency has received modest attention only,<br />possibly hindering further uptake. The present research performed a more detailed exploration of the relationship between CATA responses and perceived intensity of sensory attributes. In addition, the following question was addressed:<br />How many consumers are necessary to interpret differences in CATA citation proportions as a proxy of differences in perceived intensity? The present research includes new empirical data from four consumer studies conducted in New Zealand and China under central location test conditions and a re-analysis of<br />one consumer study. When dealing with samples with clear differences, the percentage of consumers selecting a sensory term for describing samples tended to be linearly correlated to average intensity ratings. A median of 15 consumers was<br />needed for CATA to show good linear correlations with average intensity ratings, and the minimum number of consumers needed to reach the threshold for a good correlation was generally lower than 30.</p>

<div>El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar la percepción de los consumidores uruguayos en relación a la implementación de advertencias nutricionales en cuatro puntos de venta de comida y generar ideas sobre cómo podría implementarse esta medida. Se realizó un estudio online con una muestra no probabilística de 547 participantes, reclutados utilizando publicidad en redes sociales. Los participantes indicaron su grado de acuerdo con la implementación de advertencias nutricionales en panaderías, rotiserías, lugares de venta de comida rápida y sitios de pedidos online, y proporcionaron ideas sobre cómo incluir esta inforamción en cada punto de venta. Los resultados sugieren que la población tiene una perecpeción positiva sobre la inclusión de advertencias nutricionales en puntos de venta de comida. Los participantes destacaron la importancia de incluir esta información en un lugar visible al momento de elegir los productos, de forma que pueda ser tenida en cuenta al tomar las decisiones. En particular, las vitrinas y la cartelería/pizarras fueron identificados como lugaresestatégicos para la inclusión de advertencias nutricionales en panaderías/rotiserías y puntos de venta de comida rápida, respectivamente. Los resultados proporcionan valiosa información para extender la inclusión de advertencias nutricionales a puntos de venta de comida.</div>

Objective: To analyse the process for the development and implementation of mandatory nutritional warning labels inUruguay, in order to inform future nutrition policy making and strategic engagement by public health actors.<br />Design: The study design drew on policy analysis methodology and case study research methodology. Two main sources of information were selected and analysed for the current study: eighteen official documents from the Uruguayan government<br />and 259 news reports, published between June 2017 and February 2021.<br />Setting: Uruguay, Latin America.<br />Results: The Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health led a cross-sectoral working group composed of diverse governmental stakeholders, international organisations and the academia to develop the front-of-package nutrition labelling policy.<br />A robust evidence-based approach, based on rigorous scientific knowledge generated in the country, was followed. However, changes in the systemic governing coalition as a consequence of a change in government led to a delay in the entry into force and changes in the regulation. The food industry was the main opponent to the warning label regulation and relied on widely reported corporate political activities to influence the policy process: information and messaging, legal action, policy substitution, opposition, fragmentation and destabilisation.<br />Conclusions: Key insights to inform future policy action in Uruguay and other jurisdictions were derived. Results stressed the importance of an evidence-based approach for policy design and the early engagement with actors from all the political<br />system.

New compounds to fght cancer are needed due to cancer high incidence and lack of curative treatments for several classes of this disease. Metal-based coordination compounds ofer a variety of molecules that can turn into drugs. Among them, coordi nation copper complexes are emerging as an attractive class of compounds for cancer treatment. A series of [Cu(l-dipeptide) (tmp)] (tmp=3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) complexes were synthesized and characterized in the solid state, including the determination of the crystalline structure of [Cu(Gly-Gly)(tmp)]·3.5 H2O and [Cu2Cl4(tmp)2]. The complexes were studied in solution, where the major species are also ternary ones. The lipophilicity of the complexes was determined and the binding to the DNA was evaluated, suggesting that it occurs in the DNA’s major groove. The cytotoxicity of the com plexes was evaluated on diferent cancer cell lines: human metastatic breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 (triple negative, ATCC: HTB-26), MCF-7 (ATCC: HTB-22), SK-BR-3 (ATCC: HTB-30), human lung epithelial carcinoma A549 (ATCC: CCL-185), cisplatin resistant-human ovarian carcinoma A2780cis (SIGMA) and nontumoral cell lines: MRC-5 (lung; ATCC: CCL-171) and MCF-10A (breast, ATCC: CRL-10317). [Cu(l-dipeptide)(tmp)] complexes are highly cytotoxic as compared to [Cu(l-dipeptide)(phenanthroline)] and cisplatin. Therefore, [Cu(l-dipeptide)(tmp)] complexes are promising candidates to have their in vivo activity further studied toward new treatments for triple negative breast cancer and other aggressive tumors for which there is no curative pharmacological treatment to the date.

<p>The aim of this work was to develop nanomaterials that can be used as sensitizers in radiotherapy treatment. The synthesis of bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) particles with nanometer size by the hot injection method was studied as well as their behavior<br />when coated with a biocompatible agent. The hot injection method allowed us to synthesize Bi2S3 nanorods measuring in average 4.2 ± 1.4 nm in width and 27.5 ± 16.3 nm in length. Moreover, to improve their biocompatibility, these nanorods were coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone with the purpose of studying the behavior of nanorods in the bloodstream. The results indicated that the suspensions were more stable when the media had protein components which may facilitate the blood circulation of the particles. The toxicity of the nanorods and their radiosensitization potential were evaluated and determined in breast cancer cells (MCF7). These results show that the synthesized nanorods did not evidence cytotoxicity up to a concentration of 2500 μg/mL, over 72 h of incubation. On the other hand, the sensitivity of MCF7 cells with and without nanorods in the culture medium, afterward irradiating them with a dose of 2 Gy 60Co gamma radiation source, showed a 38% increase in cell death when compared to cells that were only irradiated. Our results show that Bi2S3 nanorods are very promising as anticancer agents improving the efficiency of radiotherapy.</p>

<p>The metabolic alterations associated with the increase in milk production make the transition period critical to the health of dairy cows, usually leading to a higher incidence of disease in periparturient animals. In this manuscript, we describe the use of NMR-based untargeted metabolomics to follow how these changes impact the serum metabolome in a group of 28 transition dairy cows with no initial clinical diseases. Principal component analysis (PCA) of serum 1H NMR data from<br />four weeks before calving to 8 weeks after parturition allowed us to clearly identify four stages during the transition period. Pairwise comparisons using orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and univariate data analysis led to the identification of 18 metabolites that varied significantly through these stages. Species such as acetate, betaine, and creatine are observed early after calving, while other markers of metabolic stress, including acetone, �-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and choline, accumulate significantly at the height of milk production. Furthermore, marked<br />variations in the levels of lactate, allantoin, alanine, and other amino acids reveal the activation of different gluconeogenic pathways following parturition. Concomitant with a return to homeostasis, a gradual normalization of the serum metabolome occurs 8 weeks after calving. Correlations of metabolite levels with dietary and metabolic adaptations based on animal parity could also be identified. Overall, these results show that NMR-based chemometric methods are ideally suited to monitor manifestations of metabolic diseases throughout the transition period and to assess the impact of nutritional management schemes on the metabolism of dairy cows.</p>

<p>os polímeros de coordinación metal-orgánicos (MOFs) son un tipo de material poroso sumamente versátil en cuanto al rango de aplicaciones posibles. Los MOFs se forman a partir del ensamblaje entre centros metálicos y ligandos orgánicos en una red tridimensional. Las propiedades del MOF en cuestión<br />dependen del centro metálico, el ligando, el tipo de conexión, la estructura tridimensional, la morfología, entre otros factores. La inmensidad de posibles arreglos ha permitido la utilización de<br />MOFs en diversos campos de aplicación, desde la adsorción y separación de gases, hasta la fotocatálisis. Siendo los MOFs materiales de elevada cristalinidad, la resolución de sus estructuras por métodos de difracción es accesible, lo que permite aspirar a comprender las bases de su funcionamiento en término de arreglos atómicos. Este trabajo tratará de explorar dos aplicaciones en particular y sus relaciones con la estructura atómica para una familia de MOFs: la conducción protónica para potenciales electrolitos de celdas de combustible de baja temperatura y la generación de un material emisor de luz blanca a partir de tres centros lantánidos emisores.<br />La tesis se centra en el estudio de una familia de MOFs heteropolinucleares de fórmula general [Ln2M3(oda)6]∙nH2O, formados a partir de un metal lantánido trivalente (Ln3+), un metal de transición divalente (M2+) y el ligando oxidiacetato (oda2-). El ensamblaje entre los tres lleva en general a la<br />formación de una estructura hexagonal neutra o de una red cúbica aniónica con contraiones intercalados en los poros del material. Se estudiaron principalmente las series que estaban<br />prácticamente inexploradas de M = Ni y Co, en todo el rango de iones Ln. Se focalizó en los aspectos estructurales de los compuestos, sobre todo en las características geométricas que llevan a la obtención de un polimorfo preferencial en función de los metales M y Ln. Se propuso un modelo en el cual se define un factor de tolerancia en función de los radios iónicos de los metales, con el objetivo de explicar y predecir el tipo de estructura esperada. Se puso a prueba el factor definido frente a un sistema binario en la posición M: [Yb2NixCo3-x(oda)6]∙nH2O. Se caracterizaron por medio de difracción<br />de polvo diferentes muestras con distinto grado de sustitución.</p>

<p>The association of autoimmune diseases with particular allellic products of the class-II major histocompatibility complex<br />(MHCII) region implicates the presentation of the offending self-antigens to T cells. Because antigen-presenting cells are<br />tolerogenic when they encounter an antigen under non-inflammatory conditions, the manipulation of antigen presentation may induce antigen-specific tolerance. Here, we show that, in mouse models of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, the systemic administration of a single dose of nanobodies that recognize MHCII molecules and conjugated to the relevant self-antigen under non-inflammatory conditions confers long-lasting protection against these diseases. Moreover, co-administration of a nanobody–antigen adduct and the glucocorticoid dexamethasone, conjugated to the nanobody via a cleavable linker, halted the progression of established experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in symptomatic mice and alleviated their symptoms. This approach may represent a means of treating autoimmune conditions.</p>

<p>In the search of antimicrobial agents a novel bisthiazole ligand containing a methylamine linker (ethyl 2-((2-methylthiazole-4-yl)methylamino)thiazole-4-carboxylate (BTa) and its copper(II) complex [CuCl2BTa]⋅2H2O were synthetized. Both compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. Single crystal Xray diffraction of copper complex evidence a pentacoordinated copper(II) center of intermediate geometry<br />forming 5 and 7 membered chelate rings with BTa acting as a tridentate ligand leaving the amine N–H group in the thiazole linker available for participation in intermolecular interactions. Structure packing was analyzed by means of Hirshfeld surfaces, 2D fingerprint plots and lattice interaction energies were assessed. In order to deepen the understanding of the coordination to the flexible ligand DFT studies were carried out at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory. Calculated FTIR frequencies were used to perform a Vibrational Energy Distribution Analysis (VEDA) where potential energy distribution of vibrational was determined. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for BTa and CuBTa on E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 25923, P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and C. albicans ATCC 10231 were determined.</p>

Abstract

Protected Areas (PAs) are locations for conservation, internationally recognized for their natural, ecological, and/or cultural values. Human presence in PAs is generally limited to minimal or banned exploitation of natural resources. However, different threats to PAs are evident as a result of short and long-range transport of organic pollutants of legacy and emerging concern. There has been a shift of interest in legacy pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to emerging compounds, resulting in a need for improved monitoring strategies in PAs. Here, we highlight the main advances in environmental analytical chemistry for legacy and emerging pollution monitoring in PAs. Trends in sampling, sample preparation and instrumental determination of multiclass organic pollutants in biotic and abiotic matrices are presented and discussed. Here, we considered the most relevant and recent literature regarding organic pollutants in PAs from terrestrial to aquatic landscapes collected within 2015 to the present time frame.

In general, the plant parts used by popular medicine are the rhizophore (underground stem) and roots, in the form of infusions or decoctions. Their main indications are: antirheumatic, antisyphilitic, diuretic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and to treat skin conditions (i.e. psoriasis) and gout; among others. There is lacking scientific evidence regarding the phytochemistry of such aqueous extracts, as well as their biological and pharmacological properties. Both aerial and underground organs have been described to contain polyphenolic acids, flavonoids (aglycones, glycosides and proanthocyanidin oligomers/polymers) and saponins; but no systematic research on the isolation of other families of natural products has been conducted, yet. The production of secondary metabolites (in particular flavonoids) is highly dependent on both environmental conditions (solar radiation, herbivores, etc.) of habitats and the phenological stage of the plant itself. The scientific pharmacological in vitro tests performed on S. campestris extracts have confirmed their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as the lack of acute toxicity. However, they have failed to demonstrate diuretic effects in in vivo models; results on the antimicrobial potential are controversial. Further research is needed to evaluate the other ethnomedicinal properties attributed to the vegetal drug. This chapter presents a critical review of the special literature on S. campestris including the most updated information available in journals, books and the internet.

<p>Baccharis L. (Asteraceae) contains more than 440 species of<br />exclusively American distribution, from USA to Argentina,<br />concentrated mostly in the highland areas of southern Brazil and throughout the Andes. Besides its ethnopharmacological/ medicinal importance, Baccharis volatile fractions (VFs) are important sources of bioactive compounds for flavor and fragrance industry, mainly the species B. dracunculifolia DC. and in a lesser extention B. trimera (Less.), whose essential oils (vassoura and carqueja oil, respectively) are in commerce. However, research and valorization of other Baccharis species as aroma sources remains scarce to date. In this chapter we discuss the relevance of B. uncinella DC., the species more<br />closely related genetically to B. dracunculifolia. Focusing our study on the different techniques and protocols applied to obtain B. uncinella VFs, namely steam distillation (SD, at both, laboratory- and pilot-scales to obtain the “other vassoura essential oil”), simultaneous distillation- extraction (SDE), and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The chemical identification and quantitation of VFs was carried out by conventional gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (quadrupole analyzer) (GC-qMS). A close look at the data indicated that the chemical composition of B. uncinella VFs largely depended on the extraction technique, thus significantly affecting their aromatic potential. Only SDE allowed the recovery of lighter volatile compounds as C6 components (i.e., “green leaf volatiles”), pilot-scale SD concentrated more hydrocarbons and fewer oxygenated compounds compared to laboratory-scale SD, and SFE recovered several oxygenated monoterpenes and polyquinane sesquitepenes (tentative identification) not obtained by the other techniques. The main components found in the VFs were α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, (E)-caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, spathulenol, and caryophyllene oxide; most of them olfactorily relevant compounds according to previous studies. Therefore, the importance of B. uncinella, its VFs and the “other vassoura oil” as potential sources of aromatic compounds in the flavor and fragrance industry is highlighted.</p>

<p>The essential oil composition of the aerial parts from Baccharis palustris Heering (Asteraceae), a highly endangered species, was analyzed by GC/qMS, GC/HRMS-TOF, FT-IR, UV–vis and NMR spectroscopy using 1D and 2D techniques. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the essential oil composition of B. palustris, as well as the first phytochemical study on this plant species. The volatile extracts were obtained from different phenologicals stages of plant, at flowering stage (FS) and vegetative stage (VS), where 51 components were identified accounting for 96.3 % and 99.0 % of the oil, respectively. The oil was rich in polyacetylene compounds (> 75 %), being the main components identified the new natural C9-polyacetylenes 1-nonene-3,5-diyne (1, here named as<br />baccharisdiyne) (52.7–65.0 %), 1,7(Z)-nonadiene-3,5-diyne [2, 7(Z)-dehydro-baccharisdiyne] (14.4–17.8 %), and 1,7(E)-nonadiene-3,5-diyne [3, 7(E)-dehydro-baccharisdiyne] (1.5–2.4 %). In addition, the known polyacetylenic compounds (Z)-lachnophyllum acid methyl ester (4) (4.3–5.3 %) and (E)-lachnophyllum acid methyl ester (5) (0.2 %) were also identified. Moreover, GC/qMS analysis allowed the identification of other 46 components in the essential oil samples, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenoids. In B. palustris, C9-polyacetylenes<br />probably derive biogenetically from a C10 precursor: baccharisdiyne (1) would be derived from either or both<br />lachnophyllum methyl ester geometric isomers (4 or 5), by enzymatic hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation. Dehydro-baccharisdiynes (2 and 3) could be produced by a similar pathway starting from the corresponding matricaria acid methyl ester isomers, one of which was tentatively identified at trace-level in B. palustris essential oil.</p>

<p>Ibicella lutea (Lindl.) van Eselt. is the main species of the genus Ibicella. It belongs to the small Martyniaceae family and it is used, along with less common species of Ibicella such as I. parodii and I. nelsoniana, in remedies of popular medicine. The phytochemical analysis of the plants showed the presence of several fatty<br />acid glycosides with antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, as well as several strains of uropathogenic Proteus mirabilis. These facts help explain the widespread ethnopharmacological use of the plant.</p>

<p><em>Cissampelos pareira</em>L. (Menispermaceae) is a widely used medicinal plant, also used to treat bites of venomous animals, particularly snakes. Ophidian accidents are a serious public health problem in Argentina where the Bothrops genus of snakes is responsible for 97% of these accidents, peculiarly B. diporus (“yarará chica”) responsible for 80% of them. In the northeast of the country (Corrientes Province), C. pareira is commonly used against the venom of B. diporus; its use is described in almost all-ethnobotanical literature of the countries where the plant grows. In vitro and in vivo antivenom activities of C. pareira extracts from plants collected at two different phytogeographic regions of Corrientes (Argentina) were evaluated against B. diporus venom. The seasonal influence on the chemical composition of extracts was also studied to determine the associated range of variability and its influence on the antivenom activity. Besides, an evaluation of the chemical composition of the volatile extract was performed to assess its chemical stability. These results support the ethnopharmacological use of this species. <p>Cu and Zn bioaccessibility was studied in two different beef cuts (rib plate and top sirloin), through the development of an in vitro assay. Samples were cooked at two degrees of doneness (medium and well-done) as usually consumed locally, to establish the contribution to the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Simulated gastrointestinal conditions were optimized and trueness of the method was evaluated by performing mass balances. Analytical determinations were performed by atomic absorption spectrometry and microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry. No significant differences were found between the studied cuts nor between the degrees of doneness evaluated. Mean bioaccessible fraction (BF) of Zn was 83%, for both cuts and both degrees of doneness. In the case of Cu, rib plate presented a mean BF of 20%, while for top sirloin was of 38%. However, these differences found between cuts and degrees of doneness were not statistically significant. The contribution of Cu and Zn to the RDA for adults over 19 years was estimated, as an example, considering a 200 g portion. Results showed that the RDA of Zn would be completely covered, while the contribution to the RDA of Cu would be up to 33%.</p>

<p>Objective: To explore the use of references to the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the marketing strategies used on Facebook to promote ultra-processed products.</p>
<p>Design: A search for Facebook accounts of ultra-processed products was perFormed using a master list of products commercialised in two online supermarkets in Uruguay. For each of the identified Facebook accounts, all the content posted from the confirmation of the first cases of COVID-19 in Uruguay, on 14 March 2020, until 1 July 2020 was recorded. Posts including mentions to COVID-19, social distancing measures or their consequences were identified and analysed using content analysis.</p>
<p>Setting: Uruguay, Latin America.</p>
<p>Results: A total of 135 Facebook accounts were identified, which generated a total of 1749 posts related to ultra-processed products, from which 35 % included references to COVID-19. The majority of the posts included references to prevention measures. Approximately one-third of the posts included proposals of activities to do at home, most of which were linked to a healthy lifestyle. Tips for coping with quarantine and descriptions of the charitable work undertaken by brands were also identified.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Results from the present work provide evidence that industries of ultra-processed products have taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to promote their products, create positive associations with the brands and improve their image as part of their digital marketing strategies.</p>

<p>The epitaxial graphene layer (EG) grown on silicon carbide (SiC) is severely affected by the presence of the underlying graphene buffer layer (BL). However, little information is available on the alteration of the magnetic and electronic properties of the top layer when the BL presents structural defects. Herein, by<br />means of first-principle density functional calculations, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the SiC–BL–EG system, with a single vacancy, divacancy or a Stone–Wales defective buffer layer. Our results indicate that new highly stable magnetic states are observed in the SiC–BL–EG nondefective and defective systems, as compared to the SiC–BL models. In addition, the energy differences among the degenerate magnetic states originally found in the SiC-defective systems are further reduced upon inclusion of the EG layer.<br />Interestingly, for the single-vacancy system, a p-type doping is noticed in the spin down channel of the M = 4 lB configuration. This is in sharp contrast with the n-type doping generally measured for EG. Moreover, charge neutrality was observed in two cases namely, the half-semimetal ferromagnetic configurations of the non-defective and the single-vacancy systems. This result may open new avenues to control the electronic doping of the epitaxial graphene layer via defect engineering.</p>

<p>Dentro de los métodos rutinarios disponibles para la fabricación del grafeno, ha llamado nuestra atención el crecimiento epitaxial del mismo sobre carburo de silicio (SiC), en particular en 6H-SiC(0001), debido a su excelente capacidad de proporcionar muestras de grafeno a gran escala con una superficie homogénea y ordenada. La técnica se caracteriza por la presencia de una capa buffer de grafeno (BL), unida parcialmente y de forma covalente a átomos de silicio de la capa superior del SiC, ubicada inmediatamente debajo de la capa de grafeno epitaxial (EG). Nuestro proyecto de tesis busca explicar cuál es el rol del SiC sobre la reactividad química, propiedades eléctricas y magnéticas de las capas de grafeno ulteriores. Esta interacción es modelada con el uso de cálculos ab initio, en el marco de la Teoría del Funcional de la Densidad (DFT). Primeramente se consideró el sistema SiC-BL perfecto, ya que a pesar de ser una estructura muy estudiada, se ha notado que existe heterogeneidad en los resultados publicados. En una segunda etapa se estudió el sistema SiC-BL con defectos estructurales intrínsecos, a saber, monovacancias, divacancias y defectos Stone-Wales. Finalmente se consideró la presencia de impurezas de Si en ese mismo sistema, ya que como resultado de la síntesis basada en SiC, estos átomos podrían terminar integrando la red de carbono bidimensional al llenar las vacancias existentes en la capa de grafeno. En las tres estapas se analizó detalladamente la estructura y estabilidad energética, propiedades magnéticas, eléctricas y la reactividad de cada sistema, considerando diferentes enfoques. Uno de los resultados más relevantes de este trabajo tiene que ver con la demostración de que la existencia de átomos de Si de la capa superior del sustrato no unidos a la BL genera un estado antiferromagnético estable que se mantiene con la presencia de defectos intrínsecos e impurezas de Si en la BL, siendo la excepción los defectos de tipo divacancias. Sumado a esto, reportamos la importancia del funcional vdW-DF para reproducir con precisión las interacciones complejas de la interfaz, la configuración magnética y en última instancia el carácter semiconductor observado experimentalmente. Evidenciamos también que el tradicional dopaje tipo-n medido en la capa EG de los sistemas SiC-BL-EG, que se deriva de la transferencia de carga en la interfaz SiC-BL, puede compensarse completamente oxidando la BL con una divacancia. Finalmente, se debe mencionar que nuestro trabajo abre las puertas a la síntesis de grafeno con una disposición específica de los dopantes, sugiriendo que una lámina de siligrafeno podría ser un modelo razonable para la BL sobre SiC, la cual podría desacoplarse del sustrato mediante la intercalación de átomos de argón en la interfaz. Así, las propiedades sobresalientes del siligrafeno podrían hacerse accesibles a gran escala para aplicaciones tecnológicas novedosas.</p>
