The chemical composition of Aloysia virgata var. platyphylla oil obtained from aerial parts of different plants populations growing wild in San Lorenzo (Province of Corrientes, Argentina) were compared with the essential oil of the same species from Rio Empedrado. These selected zones represent similar ecological and geographical units of soils. In order to evaluate the constancy of the oil’s composition for this species in the selected region, samples were collected at different seasonal stages. For a more precise identification and description of chemical biodiversity of this medicinal and aromatic plant, the analysis and characterization of enantiomers from sabinene, β-caryophyllene and germacrene D has also been evaluated. University students’ academic achievement measured by means of academic progress is modeled through linear and logistic regression, employing prior achievement and demographic factors as predictors. The main aim of the present paper is to compare results yielded by both statistical procedures, in order to identify the most suitable approach in terms of goodness of fit and predictive power. Grades awarded in basic scientific courses and demographic variables were entered into the models at the first step. Two hypotheses are proposed: (a) Grades in basic courses as well as demographic factors are directly related to academic progress, and (b) Logistic regression is more appropriate than linear regression due to its higher predictive power. Results partially confirm the first prediction, as grades are positively related to progress. However, not all demographic factors considered proved to be good predictors. With regard to the second hypothesis, logistic regression was shown to be a better approach than linear regression, yielding more stable estimates with regard to the presence of ill-fitting patterns. Cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance techniques were used in the investigation of novel 3-alkoxy- and 3-hydroxy-1-[ω-(dialkylamino)alkyl]-5-nitroindazole derivatives. A self-protonation process involving the protonation of the nitro group was observed. The reactivity of the nitro-anion radical for these derivatives with glutathione, a biological relevant thiol, was also studied by cyclic voltammetry. These studies demonstrated that glutathione could react with radical species from 5-nitroindazole system. Also we demonstrated that nitro-anion radicals show three different patterns of delocalization where the indazole 1-lateral chain does not have major influence. The head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera:Pediculidae), is an obligate ectoparasite of humans that causes pediculosis capitis, a nuisance for millions of people worldwide, with high prevalence in children. Pediculosis capitis has been treated by methods that include the physical remotion of lice, various domestic treatments and conventional insecticides. None of these methods render complete protection, and there is clear evidence for the evolution of resistance and cross-resistance to conventional insecticides. Non-toxic alternative options are hence needed for head lice treatment and/or prevention, and natural products from plants, especially essential oils (EOs), are good candidates for safer control agents that may provide good anti-lice activity and low levels of evolved resistance. A few EOs have been tested as repellents with promissory results, although often in vitro tests and clinical trials produce contradictory results. A handful of fixed extracts and several EOs and their individual components have also been tested as contact pediculicides or fumigants. The studies have focused mainly on plant families characterized for the production of EOs. While many EOs and individual compounds showed pediculicide activity, comparing results is difficult due to the diverse bioassay methodologies. Studies of anti-lice activity of individual EO components provide the basis for preliminary conclusions of structure–activity relationships, although no clear patterns can yet be drawn. We here attempt to provide a concise compilation of the available information on anti-lice activity of plant extracts and plant-derived compounds, which we hope may be of help for future developments in this area. A panel of 140 consumers evaluated the color acceptability of the samples using a 9-point structured scale. The vibrational spectroscopic behavior of a series of 16 palladium(II) complexes with 8 bioactive nitrofuran containing thiosemicarbazones as ligands has been studied in the solid state. The IR and Raman spectra of these complexes and the free nitrofuran thiosemicarbazone ligands were recorded and analyzed. Experimental spectra were satisfactorily described by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The combination of experimental and theoretical methods allowed us to perform the characterization of the main vibrations that show the mode of coordination of the thiosemicarbazone moiety to palladium even though these vibration bands are located in spectral regions showing a complicated pattern due to the presence of vibrations of the nitrofuran moiety and combination modes involving furan vibrations. A characteristic vibrational spectroscopic pattern has been defined for Pd(II) 5-nitrofuryl thiosemicarbazone complexes. This systematic knowledge may be useful for the analysis of the spectroscopic behavior of other coordination compounds holding the 5-nitrofuran thiosemicarbazone moiety. In this work, we report a part of a systematic study of the influence of the synthesis routes on the properties of polycrystalline samples of PrxY1−xBa2Cu3O7−δ. We have prepared high-quality samples of this material by following a sol–gel method, associated with heat treatment in both an inert argon and an oxygen atmospheres in order to compare their influence on the formation of the superconducting phase. Magnetic measurement (AC susceptibility) show that the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases in samples prepared in argon when compared to those prepared in oxygen, for the same composition and Pr fraction less than 0.5. In addition to this, preliminary results of AC and DC magnetic susceptibility show superconductivity for samples with Pr fraction higher than 0.5 (and up to 0.9) prepared under argon flux, which may indicate the existence of stable superconductivity for all compositions, including pure Pr-123. A series of indazole N1-oxide derivatives has been spectroscopically studied in solution using 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR based on pulsed field gradient selected PFG 1HAX (X=13C and 15N) gHMQC and gHMBC experiments. Some indazoles were prepared using a new methodology to compare its spectral and structural data with the indazole N1-oxide parent compounds. The 13C resonances of the indazole N1-oxide carbon 3 and 7a demonstrate the N-oxide push-electron capability. The 15N resonances of the indazole N-oxide, nitrogen 1, are near to 30 ppm more shielded than the corresponding values in the indazole heterocycle (deoxygenated form). Moreover, the structures of one indazole and one indazole N-oxide were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The solid state structures were contrasted with the theoretical ones obtained in vacuo at different calculus level. The aromaticity of the derivatives was studied analyzing the HAH coupling constants of indazole’s aromatic hydrogens and measuring CAC distances in the solid state. The fragmentation that takes place in EI/MS was gathered for all the indazole N-oxide derivatives and the general fragmentation pattern analyzed. Immobilization of enzymes on thiolsulphinate-agarose, a thiol-reactive support, is a unique method which allows reversible covalent immobilization under mild conditions, so excellent immobilization and activity yields are obtained. It allows both the formation of stable bonds as well as enzyme desorption and matrix regeneration. The impact of the source of the enzyme’s thiol group involved in the immobilization (native, reduced disulphide or chemically introduced) on the properties of the resulting biocatalysts was studied using three b-galactosidases from Escherichia coli , Kluyveromices lactis and Aspergillus oryzae as a model. Chemical thiolation, which generates changes at surface exposed lysines, produced derivatives similar to their soluble counterparts. In this study three different approaches—acceptability limit, failure cut-off point methodology, and survival analysis—to estimate the sensory shelf life of brown pan bread elaborated with different enzymes using consumer data were compared. The study was carried out in Spain and Uruguay independently, where four batches of bread were produced, with the same base formulation, one without enzyme, the others with the addition of maltogenic amylase, xylanase, and a mixture of both. The results showed that for Uruguayan consumers the mixture of enzymes provided better results in extending shelf life than the addition of amylase alone. For the Spanish consumers only the addition of amylase provided the desired results, and for consumers of both countries the use of xylanase did not extend the shelf life of bread. Among the methodologies used for the estimation, survival analysis provided the most adequate predictions considering consumer rejection of the product. Hedonic scales do not always reflect consumer behaviour when deciding whether to accept or reject a certain product for its consumption. The factors affecting the innate susceptibility to Echinococcus granulosus infections are largely unknown. We assessed the interaction of healthy human neutrophils with protoscoleces (PSC) and antigen B (AgB) of E. granulosus by analysis of CD11b upregulation and H2O2 production by flow cytometry. PSC induced neutrophil activation, but their viability was not affected. In contrast, no effects were observed with AgB in both assays. Neutrophil-enriched fractions were also incubated with PSC or AgB, and interleukin 8 (IL-8) production was measured by ELISA. Significant increment in IL-8 production was detected only in supernatants from neutrophilenriched fractions cultured with PSC. The possible effect of a prior incubation with AgB on the phorbol myristate acetate-induced activation was also evaluated. No changes were observed in CD11b expression, but the H2O2 production was significantly reduced in platelet-activating factor (PAF)-primed neutrophils. To date, there are a few technologies for the development of noncompetitive immunoassays for small molecules, the most common of which relies on the use of anti-immunocomplex antibodies. This approach is laborious, case specific, and relies upon monoclonal antibody technology for its implementation. We recently demonstrated that, in the case of monoclonal antibody-based immunoassays, short peptide loops isolated from phage display libraries can be used as substitutes of the anti-immunocomplex antibodies for noncompetitive immunodetection of small molecules. The aim of this work was to demonstrate that such phage ligands can be isolated even when the selector antibodies are polyclonal in nature. Using phenoxybenzoic acid (PBA), a major pyrethroid metabolite, as a model system, we isolated the CFNGKDWLYC peptide after panning a cyclic peptide library on the PBA/anti-PBA immunocomplex. The sensitivity of the noncompetitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) setup with this peptide was 5-fold (heterologous) or 400-fold (homologous) higher than that of the competitive assay setup with the same antibody. Phage anti-inmunocomplex assay (PHAIA) was also easily adapted into a rapid and highly sensitive dipstick assay. The method not only provides a positive readout but also constitutes a major shortcut in the development of sensitive polyclonal-based assays, avoiding the need of synthesizing heterologous competing haptens. A linear set of four Mn3+O5 pyramids placed on the ab plane and pointing along the +x, -y, +y, -x directions defines the n = 0 building block for the series. The nth members can be constructed from blocks containing four pyramids and n Mn4+O6 octahedra with 2/m symmetry. Compounds in the related systems CaMnOx and LaCuOx, containing Mn3+ and Cu2+ pyramids and Mn4+ and Cu3+ octahedra have also been found to be members of the series. The size and charge of the A-site cation and the apical distortion of the pyramidally coordinated B-site cation are shown to be important factors in the stabilization of certain members of the series. The origins of the biological complexity and the factors that regulate the development of community composition, diversity and richness in soil remain largely unknown. To gain a better understanding of how bacterial communities change during soil ecosystem development, their composition and diversity in soils that developed over c. 77 000 years of intermittent aeolian deposition were studied. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses were used to assess the diversity and composition of the communities. The bacterial community composition changed with soil age, and the overall diversity, richness and evenness of the communities increased as the soil habitat matured. When analysed using a multivariate Bray–Curtis ordination technique, the distribution of ribotypes showed an orderly pattern of bacterial community development that was clearly associated with soil and ecosystem development. Similarly, changes in the composition of the FAMEs across the chronosequence were associated with biomarkers for fungi, actinomycetes and Gram-positive bacteria. The development of the soil ecosystem promoted the development of distinctive microbial communities that were reminiscent of successional processes often evoked to describe change during the development of plant communities in terrestrial ecosystems. We have recently reported advances in this area, showing the importance of the interaction with Mg2+ and Ca2+. We now extend the data to Sr2+ and Ba2+, which behaved similarly to Mg2+ and Ca2+, but giving even less soluble systems. We also describe the interactions with Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ in a non-interacting medium: these depended strongly on cation charge but only weakly on ionic radius within each series. In addition, we probed structural aspects of InsP6 compounds with alkaline earth cations, by means of IR and Raman spectroscopy of the solids and computational calculations on the 1:1 complexes of Mg2+. Both approaches suggested direct and multidentate phosphate-metal coordination. In [Mg(H2L)(H2O)3]8−, three oxygen atoms from two phosphate groups and three water molecules were predicted to form a roughly octahedral coordination shell; alternate or vicinal phosphate groups were predicted to chelate Mg2+ depending on whether InsP6 is in the 5-axial/1-equatorial or the 1-axial/5-equatorial conformation, respectively.
