A summary of the resource.
The volumes of activation for the spontaneous, base-, and acid- catalysed path of the hydrolysis reaction of a series of trans-[Co(MeNH2)(NH3)4X](3-n)+ ions (X = Cl-, Br-, (ONO2)- (OSO3)2-) have been determined in order to establish analogies with the dissociative trends found in previous work with the spontaneous hydrolysis of neutral ligands from the same cores. While for the base catalysed path a significant decrease in the activation volume is found on going from the {Co(NH3)5} to the trans- {Co(MeNH2)(NH3)4} inert skeleton (i.e. 9.8, 12.5, 4.0 and 9.1 cm3 mol-1 for the chloro, bromo, nitrato and sulfato derivatives), no significant changes are observed for the same complexes in the spontaneous reaction. The trends are rationalized in terms of the important changes occurring in electrostriction factors for the DCB and Id intimate mechanisms operating and the important increase in the degree of dissociativeness due to the presence of a trans-methylamino ligand. For the acid catalysed path the differences are much more difficult to assess, specially taking into account the limited information available as well as the inherent errors involved in the rate constant determination.

A summary of the resource.
Nitrite ion competition has been measured for the base hydrolysis reaction of rans-Co(N-H3)4(NH2CH3)Xn+ ions (X = Cl−, Br−, NO3− and SO42−) in 1.0 M NaNO2 at 25°C. Both O- and N- bonded Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)NO22+ are formed. Subsequently the Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)ONO2+ isomer rearranges in OH− to give the thermodynamically more stable Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)NO22+ ion. The total NO2− captured shows a slight dependence on the overall charge of the complex and on the nature of X (R = 2.2, 2.1, 3.6 and 1.2 ± 0.5% for X = Cl−, Br−, NO3−, NO3−, and SO42−, respectively). These results differ from those observed with complexes of the type Co(NH3)5Xn+ and Co(NH2CH3)5Xn+ where X includes a variety of anions.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The kinetics of aquation and base hydrolysis reactions of fmns-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(OSO3)]+ have been studied. In acid solution the aquation rate, Raq, follows the equation Raq/[complex] = ks + kc[H+], at constant ionic strenght μ = 1.0Μ. The activation parameters are ΔΗ* = 88.8 kj mol-1, ΔS* = - 50.5 JK-1 mol-1 , ΔΗ* = 96.7 kj mol-1 and ΔS* =-23 JK-1 mol-1. The rate constants at 25°C are ks = 4.15 χ 10-6s-1 and kc = 4.52M -1s-1 . The rate of base hydrolysis, ROH, follows the equation ROH/complex] = k0H [OH-]. The activation parameters are ΔΗ*OH =74.9kJmol-1 and ΔS*OH = 2JK-1 mol-1 and the rate constant is kOH = 0.58M 1 s-1 at 25°C and μ, = 0.15 Μ. The stereochemistry of the hidroxo product has been determined (cis-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)- (OH)]2+ =9%). The results are discussed in the light of the reaction mechanisms proposed so far.

Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) was performed for [Co(NH3)5Cl](ClO4)2, trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)Cl]- (ClO4)2, [Co(NH2CH3)5Cl](ClO4)2 and trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(OSO3)](ClO4) complexes. Comparison of the results for the complexes [Co(NH3)5Cl](ClO4)2 and trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)Cl](ClO4)2 shows clearly the electronic influence (qI effect) of the methylamine group on the cobalt and through this on the chlorine atom in trans position. Comparison of [Co(NH2CH3)5Cl](ClO4)2 with trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)Cl](ClO4)2 shows that methylation of the four cis-NH3 ligands does not produce a proportional decrease in the binding energy of the cobalt atom, while the electron density of the chloro ligand is not affected. For the complex trans- [Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(OSO3)](ClO4) theqI effect is almost completely compensated by the presence of the sulfato group in trans position. Acid dissociation constants are also reported for [Co(NH3)5(OH2)]3q and trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(OH2)]3q ions. The implications of these results for the mechanism of the acid and base hydrolysis reactions of acidopentaaminecobalt(III) complexes are discussed. The preparation of the trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(OSO3)](ClO4) complex through the trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(SO3)]q precursor is also described. q2000 All rights reserved.

Base hydrolysis and aquation of trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)X]2+ (where X = Cl, Br and NO3) complexes are reported. Both types of reactions are four to eight times faster than the corresponding reactions for [Co(NH3)5X]2+ complexes. The positive activation entropies of the base hydrolysis for all the studied trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)X]2+ ions and the stereochemistry of the hydroxo products are indicative of a dissociative conjugate base, Dcb, mechanism. The steric course of the base hydrolysis differs significantly from that of the parent penta-ammines. For the aquation reactions, the activation enthalpies of the trans-methylamine and penta-ammine complexes are similar, while the activation entropies are more positive (or less negative) for the former. These results are interpreted in terms of an Id mechanism.

N4-Methyl-4-nitroacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (H4NO2Ac4M, 1), N4,N4-dimethyl-4-nitroacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (H4NO2Ac4DM, 2) and N4-piperidyl-4-nitroacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (H4NO2Ac4Pip, 3) and their copper(II) complexes [Cu(4NO2Ac4M)2] (4), [Cu(4NO2Ac4DM)2] (5) and [Cu(4NO2Ac4Pip)2] (6) were tested for their in vitro ability to inhibit the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigote forms. H4NO2Ac4DM (2), [Cu(4NO2Ac4M)2] (4) and [Cu(4NO2Ac4DM)2] (5) proved to be as active as the clinical reference drugs nifurtimox and benznidazol. Taking into consideration the serious side effects and the poor efficacy of the reference drugs, as well as the appearance of resistance during treatment, the studied compounds could constitute a new class of anti-trypanosomal drug candidates.<br /><br />

A summary of the resource.
The invasive stages of the parasitic trematode Fasciola hepatica release proteinases into the medium in which they are mantained. In this study, we investigated the interaction of F. hepatica excretory/secretory (E/S) products and 2 cysteine proteinases (CL1 and CL2) purified from these products with extracellular matrix and basement membrane macromolecules. Fasciola hepatica E/S products contained collagenolytic activity on fibrillar types I and III collagen as well as basement membrane type IV collagen. CL1 and CL2 were capable of degrading acid-soluble type III and type IV collagen but not insoluble type I collagen. In contrast, neither the E/S products nor the purified CL1 and CL2 showed elastinolytic activity. Fibronectin and laminin were degraded by E/S products and by CL1 and CL2. Sequence analysis of fibronectin degradation products showed that the fragments obtained corresponded to complete biologically active domains. These results indicate that the cysteine proteinases secreted by F. hepatica may be involved in the process of tissue invasion by the parasite.

Parasite excretion–secretion products and both cathepsins L produced similar degradation patterns and cleaved all human IgG subclasses at the hinge region, yielding at pH 7.3 and 378C Fab and Fc fragments in the case of IgG1 and IgG3 or Fab2 and Fc in IgG2 and IgG4. While IgG1 and IgG3 were readily degraded by E/ S products either in the presence or in the absence of reducing agents, INTRODUCTION IgG2 and IgG4 were resistant to proteolysis and were only digested in the presence of 0.1 M dithiothreitol. The cathepsins L needed the presence of dithiothreitol to digest IgG1, IgG2, and IgG4 whereas IgG3 was identically cleaved under both reducing and nonreducing Fasciola hepatica, the common liver fluke, is the causconditions. The main cleavage sites produced by E/S products, CL1, ative agent of fasciolosis in mammals. When infecting rumior CL2 were located at the positions peptide bonds: His237-Thr238, nants, like cattle and sheep, it causes significant economical Glu237-Cys239, Gly233-Asp234, and Ser241-Cys242 for g 1, g 2, g 3, or g 4, respectively. Past research comparing sensory product characterisations from trained assessors to those elicited by consumers using CATA (check-all-that-apply) questions have shown that results are comparable. Yet, it remains to be established whether the use of CATA questions by consumers for complex products (e.g., wine) and in instances where the focal samples are similar (e.g., different brands of New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon blanc white wine) delivers product characterisations similar to those from trained assessors using generic descriptive analysis. In four studies, this question was addressed. The product categories were white wine, raspberries, milk desserts and powdered drinks. The results supported previous findings to reveal that the two methods generated comparable results. However, the product characterisations were less similar in studies where samples were most similar and/or complex. Thus, while the validity of consumer-generated sensory profiles from CATA questions was confirmed, this approach to sensory product characterisation should be implemented with an understanding of its lesser ability to deliver nuanced product characterisations and identification of minor differences between similar and/or complex samples. Sometimes such detailed product characterisations are required; other times less detail will suffice. Which group of assessors and method to implement should, as always, be directly aligned with study objectives, and in the case of consumers using CATA questions, also include consideration of ability to concurrently elicit hedonic responses

We have investigated important intermediates and key transition states of the organocatalyzed Knoevenagel condensation using density functional theory and two different basis sets (6-31 G(d,p) and 6-311++G(2df,2pd)), both in gas phase and simulating the bulk solvent (pyridine) using the PCM method. Calculated structures for reactants, intermediates, and key transition states suggest that the secondary amine catalyst is essential, both for activating the aldehyde for nucleophilic attack, and in the possible decarboxylation pathways. The calculated results are shown to agree with available experimental information. On the basis of the results obtained, the studied mechanism may be important in the understanding of vinylphenol production during malting and brewing of wheat and barley grains.

Es bien sabido que el revolucionario descubrimiento de la Penicilina y el posterior desarrollo de fármacos antibacterianos incidió positivamente tanto en la calidad como en la esperanza de vida. Sin embargo, ya desde 1945 se conoce la capacidad de los microorganismos a generar resistencia a los mismos. El uso y abuso de los fármacos contribuyó a acelerar este proceso convirtiéndolos en menos efectivos e incluso, en ocasiones, totalmente ineficientes. Nos encontramos ante una emergencia sanitaria mundial donde es imperante el diseño de antibióticos capaces de combatir bacterias especialmente resistentes.

The outer-sphere redox behaviour of a series of [LnCoIIINCFeII( CN)5]− (Ln = n-membered pentadentate aza-macrocycle) complexes have been studied as a function of pH and oxidising agent. All the dinuclear complexes show a double protonation process at pH � 2 that produces a shift in their UV/Vis spectra. Oxidation of the different non-protonated and diprotonated complexes has been carried out with peroxodisulfate, and of the non-protonated complexes also with trisoxalatocobaltate(III). The results are in agreement with predictions from the Marcus theory. The oxidation of [Fe(phen)3]3+ and [IrCl6]2− is too fast to be measured, although for the latter the transient observation of the process has been achieved at pH = 0. The study of the kinetics of the outer-sphere redox process, with the S2O8 2− and [Co(ox)3]3− oxidants, has been carried out as a function of pH, temperature, and pressure. As a whole, the values found for the activation volumes, entropies, and enthalpies are in the following margins, for the diprotonated and non-protonated dinuclear complexes, respectively: ΔV� from 11 to 13 and 15 to 20 cm3 mol−1; ΔS� from 110 to 30 and −60 to −90 J K−1 mol−1; ΔH� from 115 to 80 and 50 to 65 kJ·mol−1. The thermal activation parameters are clearly dominated by the electrostriction occurring on outer-sphere precursor formation, while the trends found for the values of the volume of activation indicate an important degree of tuning due to the charge distribution during the electron transfer process. The special arrangement on the amine ligands in the isomer trans- [L14CoIIINCFeII(CN)5]− accounts for important differences in solvent-assisted hydrogen bonding occurring within the outer-sphere redox process, as has been established in redox reactions of similar compounds.

En esta investigación se analiza la influencia que tiene el uso de soportes audiovisuales en el aprendizaje y en el rendimiento en Química. La parte teórica incluye, en primer lugar, el merco conceptual destinado a analizar los diferentes aspectos del aprendizaje vinculados con el tema de estudio. En segundo lugar se presentan los antecedentes, el uso de soportes audiovisuales en la enseñanza en general, con énfasis en el uso de los mismos en la enseñanza de la química. La parte empírica se compone de dos secciones. La primera sección corresponde a la investigación llevada a cabo con el objetivo de analizar las relaciones entre el rendimiento en Química de los estudiantes liceales y el uso de soportes audiovisuales como medio de instrucción. Para ello se realizaron dos estudios en 2007 y 2008, de tipo cuasiexperimental dado que no fue posible asignar los sujetos aleatoriamente a los grupos de trabajo, sino que se trabajó con los grupos existentes. En ambos se trabajó con dos grupos de estudiantes que presentaban características sociodemográficas similares. En un grupo se estudió una unidad programática aplicando una metodología tradicional, utilizando principalmente información extraída de textos en español, mientras que con otro grupo se estudió el mismo tema, pero facilitando el acceso al mismo a partir de material audiovisual, elaboración de software, etc. Como medida del rendimiento en Química se adoptó la calificación obtenida por los alumnos en diferentes pruebas de conocimiento. Para validar las conclusiones se realizó el control de las variables que podían afectar el rendimiento (motivación, rendimiento previo, estrategias de estudio, antecedentes educativos de los padres, etc.). En la segunda sección se detalla cómo se llevó a cabo la producción de un material audiovisual (Video ). El material audiovisual fue producido en el marco de la pasantía que formó parte del plan de trabajo de la tesista. Dicha pasantía fue realizada en el Centro de Educación Flexible (C.E.F.) de la Facultad de Química entre los meses de diciembre de 2006 y noviembre de 2007. Por último, con la finalidad de recolectar datos que permitieran interpretar el resultado del uso del video producido en el C.E.F., se realizó una evaluación a un grupo de tercer año de Ciclo Básico que trabajó con dicho material audiovisual. Para la selección de los indicadores de rendimiento se adoptó un enfoque conductual eligiendo medidas de rendimiento centradas en los resultados de las actividades de evaluación escritas realizadas por los estudiantes (Algarabel y Dasi, 2001). Lo anterior no significa que no se le haya otorgado importancia a los procesos cognitivos de integración y estructuración de la información mediante los cuales se lograron dichos resultados, sino solamente que en este trabajo se pone el énfasis en éstos. Si bien la metodología de investigación no permite establecer relaciones de causalidad, los resultados obtenidos son consistentes con la hipótesis de que el uso de soportes audiovisuales mejora el rendimiento de los alumnos en Química. Como limitaciones se mencionan el haber trabajado con muestras de conveniencia de tamaño reducido, lo que no permite la generalización de estos hallazgos a otras poblaciones de estudiantes, así como el tiempo estipulado para la toma de datos, que impidió trabajar con un mayor número y tipo de apoyos audiovisuales. Estos resultados pueden ser tomados como punto de partida para nuevas investigaciones que puedan llevarse a cabo utilizando otros instrumentos así como también realizando otro tipo de tratamiento de los datos obtenidos.

A summary of the resource.
The tautomeric equilibrium of the title triazole compound was computationally analyzed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and MP2/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. The solvent effect was considered for three solvents (chloroform, methanol, and water). Two distinct mechanisms were applied: a direct intramolecular transfer using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and a solvent-assisted mechanism. The calculations indicated that the keto form is more stable in all cases. It was found that the barrier heights for the tautomerization reaction are very high, indicating a relatively disfavored process. Although the barrier heights for solvent-assisted reactions are significantly lower than those for the unassisted tautomerization reaction, implying the importance of the superior catalytic effect of the solvents, monosolvation was not found to be sufficient for the reaction to occur. Finally, the two intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions in the crystal structure were investigated in the gas phase; according to the calculated energies and structural parameters, the order of stability is N3–H3···O1 > N1–H1···O1.

A summary of the resource.
This paper presents a theoretical study of the addition of (HF)2 to ethylene using ab initio methods with the 3-21G basis set. Thermodynamical calculations to obtain ΔG°298 values were also made. Comparison with the bimolecular addition of HF to ethylene shows a larger stabilization of the transition state obtained, reflected in a decrease of the potential barrier. This fact, along with an analysis of the energy components and the mechanism, allows us to assert the catalytic activity of the second HF molecule. From the thermodynamics of the reaction, the need for a "bimolecular" collision between (HF)2 and ethylene and not a termolecular one is deduced, and the ability of this mechanism to explain data in the gas phase and in nonpolar solvents is sustained.
