<p>The failure of AM1 to reproduce the alleged experimental geometry of the water dimer is reported in this paper. A second-order transition state, instead of a minimum, is found at the experimental geometry with a linear hydrogen bond. It collapses to a first-order transition state with a bifurcated hydrogen bond (similar to the ab initio one) from which the true AM1 minimum is obtainable. This structure has a stabilization energy of −5.47 kcal mol<sup>−1</sup> and shows three hydrogen bond interactions. This failure of the method is attributed to an exceedingly weak bending potential of the hydrogen bond within AM1. The conclusions reached in the study of the dimers are further tested by the calculation of a water trimer and a water tetramer and the linear and bifurcated hydrogen bonded complexes between H<sub>2</sub>O and NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>. It is concluded that although it fails in the case of a dimer, AM1 may be useful in the treatment of larger clusters of hydrogen bonded molecules. All calculations are contrasted with the results of ab initio ones.</p>

<strong>Theorical study of the addition of hydrogen halides to olefins :reaction of dimeric HF with ethylene</strong>
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This paper presents a theorical sutdy of the addition of (HF)2 to ethylene using ab initio methods with the 3-21G basis set. Thermodynamical calculations to obtain DeltaGo(298) values were also made. Comparison with the bimolecular addition of HF to ethylene shows a larger stabilization of the transition state obtained reflected in a decrease of the potential barrier. This fact along with an analysis of the energy components and the mechanism |b allows us to assert the catalytic activity of the second HF molecule. From the thermodynamics of the reaction |b the need for a "biomolecular" collision between (HF)2 and ethylene and not a termolecular one is deduced |b and the ability of this mechanism to explain data in the gas phase and in nonpolar solvents is sustained.

Los hongos potencialmente patógenos para el ser humano constituyen un pequeño grupo de pocos centenares entre los cientos de miles de especies del Reino Fungi. La agricultura posee un rol preponderante en el desarrollo humano, resultando de importancia sustancial la investigación que promueva su desarrollo y comprenda en su campo de acción el control de enfermedades que puedan afectar su rendimento y productividad o amenazar la salud humana como por ejemplo, la contaminación microbiana o la presencia de micotoxinas. En este sentido, la industria citrícola cumple con estrictas prácticas de sanitización durante el cultivo y packing de las frutas frescas de forma de prevenir y controlar la contaminación microbiana que puede causar el deterioro de la fruta. Sumado al deteriodo de la calidad de los frutos que son afectados por pestes en el campo, las pérdidas durante el almacenamiento y transporte de los frutos cítricos, provocadas directamente por ataques de hongos patógenos en postcosecha, han sido estimadas en un 90 %, en aquellos casos en que no se aplican fungicidas. Es por ello, que los productos químicos utilizados en la producción se han convertido en una herramienta que permite la obtención de niveles de rendimiento y calidad. El estudio de la dinámica de los residuos de pesticidas resultantes en las distintas etapas de la cadena productiva, su distribución en los productos procesados y en los compartimentos ambientales es crítica para comprobar el cumplimiento de las buenas prácticas agrícolas, la sustentabilidad del sistema productivo global y la inocuidad de los alimentos y sub-productos que resulten. Para realizar este estudio, la instrumentación de alta sensibilidad junto a modernos tratamientos de muestra, permiten trabajar con metodologías analíticas con límites de cuantificación a nivel de trazas. El objetivo de esta tesis fue estudiar la dinámica de los residuos de pesticidas en la cadena citrícola. Los objetivos específicos, contemplando la cadena globalmente fueron: 1) Desarrollo de metodologías analíticas y estudio de los factores que influyen en la eficiencia de las determinaciones como ser el Efecto Matriz; 2) Estudio de la disipación de pesticidas de precosecha en el campo; 3) Adecuación de los tratamientos de pre y poscosecha en las condiciones de producción para cumplir con las disposiciones vigentes y asegurar la inocuidad de los productos; 4) Estudio de la eficacia de nuevas alternativas para la disminución del uso de RESUMEN 19 fungicidas de poscosecha; 5) Caracterización de los niveles de residuos de pesticidas en los efluentes de los packings nacionales y estudio de posibles vías para su remediación empleando procesos de oxidación avanzada. Durante todo el período de trabajo en estos estudios de posgrado 1. Se desarrollaron y validaron metodologías analíticas para la determinación de residuos de pesticidas en fruta fresca (naranja, mandarina y limón), en aceites esenciales y en jugo concentrado de limón. Estas metodologías permiten determinar la mayoría de los pesticidas seleccionados a niveles adecuados para cada matriz estudiada, lográndose en todos los casos, límites de cuantificación menores que los límites máximos de residuos establecidos para cada matriz. Las metodologías desarrolladas se emplearon para el análisis de muestras reales así como también para determinar el residuo remanente sobre muestras de ensayos realizados a campo y en poscosecha. 2. Se desarrolló una base de datos de alta resolución para el monitoreo de residuos de pesticidas en naranja con un sistema instrumental de alta resolución GC-ToF. Por otro lado, uno de los aspectos que influyen en la determinación analítica de residuos de pesticidas con espectrometría de masas utilizando ionización por electospray es el Efecto Matriz, esto es la influencia de los coextractivos de la matriz en estudio sobre la determinación. El Efecto Matriz se estudió durante el análisis de pesticidas utilizando una metodología acetato de etilo desarrollada (que fuera previamente validada) y trabajando con un sistema instrumental de alta resolución LC-ToF. Los resultados obtenidos indican que para una correcta cantificación de residuos de pesticidas, es necesario trabajar con curvas de calibración preparadas en la misma matriz que la muestra o en su defecto, utilizando una variedad de la misma especie. Se pudo determinar que la coelucion de analitos y metabolitos coextraídos de la matriz, es una de las causas más importantes del Efecto Matriz y que este efecto de la coelución puede minimizarse al trabajar con masas exactas de alta resolución. 2. Se desarrollaron experimentos a campo sobre variedades de mandarinas y naranja para establecer las curvas de disipación de 5 pesticidas utilizados habitualmente en instancias de precosecha y para los mismos se establecieron los tiempos de vida media bajo las condiciones del estudio. Los resultados mostraron que abamectina, spinosad, piraclostrobina, difenoconazol e imidacloprid se disipan en las condiciones de la producción nacional, alcanzando concentraciones menores que sus respectivos LMR al RESUMEN 20 momento de la cosecha. Se evaluó también cómo influye el almacenamiento en frío de la fruta durante la poscosecha de mandarinas Clementinas, sobre el nivel de residuos de pesticidas que fueron aplicados a nivel de campo. El nivel de residuo luego de 30 días de almacenamiento en frío no fue significativamente diferente para los activos estudiados en dicha variedad. 4. Se evaluó la utilización de NaHCO3 conjuntamente con imazalil como tratamiento de poscosecha en la línea de empaque buscando disminuir la carga de pesticida a ser utilizado y de esta forma influir sobre la generación de resistencia y disminución de su impacto ambiental. La incorporación de la sal no mostró diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos ni en el nivel de residuo de imazalil obtenido sobre la fruta. 5. Se ajustó la determinación de pesticidas de poscosecha en efluentes de packings y se analizaron muestras reales. En base a los compuestos detectados, se evaluó a escala de laboratorio la utilización de fotocatálisis heterogena utilizando TiO2 como catalizador como herramienta para remediar efluentes. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una degradación de más del 97 % de cada pesticida trabajando con el estándar puro a una concentración de 10 mg L-1. Los aportes de este trabajo sirven, por un lado para comprender mejor aspectos de la dinámica de pesticidas en el marco de las actividades productivas y tecnologías que la industria citrica realiza, que llevan a obtener los niveles de residuos observados. Se corrobora en estas condiciones, el cumplimiento de los límites máximos de residuos y por lo tanto, la inocuidad de la fruta producida. Por otro lado, se plantean estrategias de remediación de los residuos de pesticidas generados en los packing cítricos para disminuir el impacto ambiental de la producción citrícola sobre el ambiente acuatico

<p>The degradation of the postharvest fungicides imazalil, orthophenylphenol, and pyrimethanil was studied<br />on Clementine mandarins during packinghouse storage for a 28 day period at 4 �C. Fruits to which<br />orthophenylphenol was applied, were treated with imazalil and pyrimethanil at doses of 1000 and<br />2000 mg L�1, using cascade application for the later and cascade and wax for the former. The decay of<br />the three fungicides was evaluated using an in-house validated analytical procedure that includes the<br />extraction and dispersive clean up of the samples followed by the GC–MS determination of the pesticide<br />residues. The impact of fruit storage time on pesticide residues concentration was assessed. The residues<br />found for the different application technologies were always below the established Maximum Residue<br />Limits by the Codex Alimentarius and the European Union (5 mg kg�1 for imazalil, 7 and 8 mg kg�1 for<br />pyrimethanil, and 10 mg kg�1 and 5 mg kg�1 for orthophenylphenol). The fungicides dissipated differentially.<br />Pyrimethanil showed little degradation, if any, at both tested concentrations, but the half-life of<br />imazalil on the fruit was 15–18 days, independent of the application technology. Orthophenylphenol<br />dissipated with a half-life of 15 days. The initial imazalil residue found after cascade treatment was<br />not significantly different between the doses studied (p < 0.5), whereas when the fungicide was included<br />in wax as an emulsifiable concentrate the initial and final imazalil residues were significantly different.<br />Final residue levels after 28 days of storage were 0.12–0.24 mg kg�1 for imazalil, 0.68 mg kg�1 for<br />2-phenylphenol and 0.56 mg kg�1 for pyrimethanil for all the evaluated treatments</p>

Calendula officinalis L. (marigold) is a medicinal plant consumed at ton scale worldwide. For that reason the raw material supply cannot rely solely on the collection of wild specimens. C. officinalis is cultivated all over the world not only to cover the increasing demand but also to ensure its regular quality. When conventional cropping systems are employed, the use of pesticides to protect the cultures against pests is a common practice. The presence of contaminants in herbs for medicinal purposes is strictly ruled by Pharmacopoeias. The European pharmacopoeia, as well as the MERCOSUR, require validated methods to determine the content of pesticide residues in each specific medicinal plant. As a contribution to accomplish such requirements, in the present work a comparison of the performance of three modern multirresidue methods based on QuEChERS methodology was conducted. Aiming to find a method fit for that purpose, the original, unbuffered version and variationss of the AOAC 2007.01 and the EN 15662 protocols were evaluated in marigold for the determination of 24 pesticide residues using LC–MS/MS. The three evaluated methods where accurate and precise for all the studied compounds but the original QuEChERS extracts causes less matrix effects over the studied pesticides. After the evaluation of the figures of merits, the selected methodology was validated according to the SANTE guidelines. LOQs were determined in the range 10–100 μg kg−1 showing a linear behaviour (r2 > 0.993) from LOQ to 400 μg kg−1. The method was applied in commercial samples where atrazine, imidacloprid, pirimiphos-methyl and methalaxyl residues were detected.

The QuEChERS methods, CEN 15662 and AOAC 2007.01, and different clean-up variations were applied to the determination of pesticide residues in Peumus boldus Molina leaves, using LC and GC coupled to single and tandem mass spectrometry. Boldo belongs to the class of medicinal and aromatic plants. Because of its complex chemical composition including terpene peroxides, alkaloids and phenolic acids at concentrations typically 100-fold higher than that of a possible contaminant, it is a very challenging matrix for pesticide residue determination. Thin layer chromatography was used to evaluate the efficacy of removal of matrix co-extractives using different clean-up sorbents, including neutral alumina, graphitized carbon black (GCB), octadecyl reverse phase silica gel (RP-C18) and pH modification in the extraction and clean-up steps. The most promising method was a combination of GCB, RP-C18 and primary-secondary amine (PSA) within the QuEChERS template. The final optimized method was validated according to the SANTE guidelines using LC–MS/MS and GC–MS/MS. The method scope includes 84 representative pesticide residues with recoveries ranging from 70 to 119% and within laboratory relative standard deviations below 15%. The method was initially validated for 25 representative pesticides using GC-MSD, making it applicable in those laboratories equipped only with a single mass detector. It is important to emphasize that the method complies with the requirements of international pharmacopoeias and food regulatory agencies, since herbal teas are found in both categories, as herbal remedies and foods.

Consumers perceive functional foods as member of the particular food category to which they belong. In this context, apart from health and sensory characteristics, non-sensory factors such as packaging might have a key role on determining consumers’ purchase decisions regarding functional foods. The aims of the present work were to study the influence of different package attributes on consumer willingness to purchase regular and functional chocolate milk desserts; and to assess if the influence of these attributes was affected by consumers’ level of involvement with the product. A conjoint analysis task was carried out with 107 regular milk desserts consumers, who were asked to score their willingness to purchase of 16 milk dessert package concepts varying in five features of the package, and to complete a personal involvement inventory questionnaire. Consumers’ level of involvement with the product affected their interest in the evaluated products and their reaction towards the considered conjoint variables, suggesting that it could be a useful segmentation tool during food development. Package colour and the presence of a picture on the label were the variables with the highest relative importance, regardless of consumers’ involvement with the product. The importance of these variables was higher than the type of dessert indicating that packaging may play an important role in consumers’ perception and purchase intention of functional foods.

The catalytic performance of trimetallic oxides MeLaZr (Me: Ni, Co) was evaluated in the steam reforming of ethanol for hydrogen production. Rh doped and non doped catalysts were prepared by the pseudo sol–gel like method, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-programmed reduction (TPR), micro-homogeneity analysis (TEM-EDXS), specific surface areas (BET). A phase-segregation process takes place during the calcination for both trimetallic systems leading to the formation of La2Zr2O7 pyrochloretype compound in coexistence with the Me-oxide. NiLaZr and CoLaZr catalysts show high activity and high selectivity for hydrogen production. Addition of Rh promotes reducibility at lower temperatures for both trimetallic catalysts and remarkably improves the activity and selectivity for H2. The H2 selectivity is lowered by CO2 injection because of the increase of the rate of the reverse WGSR and/or methanation reaction. The CH4 selectivity is lowered by the dry reforming reaction. The key-role played by oxycarbonate species formed during the reforming tests leads to a highly efficient gasification of carbon deposits by the Boudouard reaction.

A summary of the resource.
The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae, serotype 14, is part of every pneumococcal vaccine presently in the market or under development. A strategy for the quantitative determination of this polysaccharide by the phenol–sulfuric acid method is described. The modality of acid addition is shown to be the critical step for obtaining reproducible test results between different technicians. Raising the incubation temperature above 80 jC increased the consistency of the method by more than 60% regardless of the acid addition modality, but at the expense of some loss of sensitivity. Incubation at 110 jC was found necessary to obtain reproducible results within 3% for this technique, which was used to follow the enrichment of the polysaccharide during the last steps of purification. A model mixture of the component polysaccharide sugars provided an adequate and economic standard to construct the calibration curve for this assay, with absorbance reading either in the reaction tubes or in a microplate. A similar procedure may be applied to the determination of other bacterial polysaccharides as well

<p>Biocatalytic cascades afford the development of economically sustainable and green processes. Herein we examined the unprecedented coupling of co-immobilised Gluconobacter oxydans and an isolated transaminase to synthesise serinol from glycerol.<br />Through this approach, we manufactured up to 36 mM serinol, the<br />highest titer ever reported for a non-fermentative biosynthesis.<br />More importantly, similar productivities are obtained starting from<br />the industrial by-product crude glycerol, demonstrating the possibilities of this hybrid heterogenenous biocatalyst for valorising<br />bio-based raw materials.</p>

Different from other aerobic microorganisms that oxidise carbon sources to water and carbon dioxide, Gluco nobacter catalyses the incomplete oxidation of various substrates with regio- and stereoselectivity. This ability, as well as its capacity to release the resulting products into the reaction media, place Gluconobacter as a privileged member of a non-model microorganism class that may boost industrial biotechnology. Knowledge of new technologies applied to Gluconobacter has been piling up in recent years. Advancements in its genetic modifi cation, application of immobilisation tools and careful designs of the transformations, have improved pro ductivities and stabilities of Gluconobacter strains or enabled new bioconversions for the production of valuable marketable chemicals. In this work, the latest advancements applied to Gluconobacter-catalysed bio transformations are summarised with a special focus on recent available tools to improve them. From genetic and metabolic engineering to bioreactor design, the most recent works on the topic are analysed in depth to provide a comprehensive resource not only for scientists and technologists working on/with Gluconobacter, but for the general biotechnologist.

Se desarrollaron y optimizaron herramientas para la implementación de la trazabilidad al sistema internacional de mediciones analíticas orgánicas a nivel nacional, no disponibles hasta la fecha. Este trabajo constituye un aporte relevante a las actividades designadas al Instituto Nacional de Metrología uruguayo, con un enfoque principal hacia las áreas salud y ambiente. En primera instancia, se trabajó sobre la determinación de creatinina en suero humano mediante el método primario de dilución isotópica con espectrometría de masas. Para obtener resultados metrológicamente trazables, se optimizó un método primario (basado en uno de referencia), permitiendo la obtención de resultados de alta veracidad con mayor eficiencia de uso de recursos. En la segunda parte de este trabajo, se desarrolló una estrategia para la determinación de pureza de compuestos orgánicos con el objetivo de generar patrones primarios. Se estudió la pureza de una muestra purificada de ficocianobilina para desarrollar un estándar cuya potencial aplicación sería la calibración de sensores para la determinación de cianobacterias en muestras acuáticas. Esta muestra purificada mostró un elevado grado de impurezas, que, combinado con la no disponibilidad comercial de sus respectivos estándares, resultó en una gran dificultad para asignar un valor de pureza y una incertidumbre asociada adecuada. Se emplearon diversas técnicas analíticas, dentro de las cuales se destaca la cromatografía líquida y espectroscopía de resonancia magnética nuclear. El conocimiento científico generado, en base a una estrategia de trabajo como la utilizada, permitirá el desarrollo de patrones químicos primarios de una numerosa variedad de compuestos químicos orgánicos según las necesidades nacionales.

We successfully synthesized two types of bismuth tri-iodide nanoparticles: uncapped (BiI3) and capped with aniline (BiI3_ani), in order to study their potential as inorganic semiconductor for an organic–inorganic hybrid material with poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT). We developed a novel direct synthesis method that avoids ligand exchange (for BiI3_ani), as well as the necessity of capping agent removal steps (for BiI3) and the formation of sec ondary compounds obtained by other techniques. Additionally, we evaluated and compared the properties of solution-processed P3HT:nanoparticles layers with the film sequence ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:nanoparticles, where ITO is indium tin oxide and PEDOT:PSS is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly styrene sulfonate. We analyzed the layers by UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy and photolumi nescence analysis. We proved that aniline restricts the growth of nanoparticles and improves the processability of the material compared to nanoparticles without capping agent. We demonstrated that both types of nanoparticles can be successfully suspended in a solvent in which P3HT is soluble, improve the UV–Vis absorption of P3HT and interact with this polymer leading to an improved crystalline ordering on the blends compared to pristine P3HT layers. We also demonstrated that BiI3 nanoparticles produce a nanoscopic mixture with P3HT and that it is possible to exploit the photoluminescence emission of P3HT:BiI3_ani layers. Our results show that both types of nanoparticles can be good candidates for use in solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrid material with P3HT, which could be employed for the fabrication of hybrid polymeric–inorganic solar cells with BiI3 nanoparticles as electron acceptor and P3HT as electron donor.

Sn-based nanocomposites attract extensive attention as a new generation of photoelectric hybrid materials due to their high photoelectric conversion efficiency. In this work we synthesized SnS2 nanoparticles by a hydrothermal method employing citric acid (capping agent) and performed a capping agent exchange by pyridine to improve their solution processing and final properties. We fabricated layers with pyridine-capped nanoparticles and poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), employing the classical partial film sequence of a solar cell (ITO/PEDOT: PSS/P3HT:Nps). We found a “coupling" between the nanoparticles and the polymer and highly ordered structures within the layers. The addition of nanoparticles improved the UV–vis absorption of P3HT and allowed the exploitation of the photoluminescence emission to promote extra charge carrier generation. Moreover, we found that SnS2_py nanoparticles form a nanoscopic mixture with the P3HT. Our pyridine-capped SnS2 nanoparticles are good candidates for fabricating hybrid materials, employing P3HT as the organic compound for application in polymeric-inorganic solar cells.

<p>In this study, we assessed the capacity of Pedobacter sp. 3.14.7 —a novel Antarctic keratinolytic bacterium— of producing a feather protein hydrolysate (FPH) with high antioxidant activity. This strain was able to degrade raw feather into protein hydrolysate under optimal conditions of 30 g l- 1 of feather concentration, pH 6.0, and 20 ◦C. Maximum enzymatic activity was detected after a 192-h cultivation period (125.67 ± 3.06 U ml- 1). Quenching of the ABTS radical (2,20-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid) by the hydrolysate reached a value of approximately 95%, with a 50% Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) value of 0.57 ± 0.01 g l- 1. An interesting reducing power of the FPH towards Fe+3 was also detected (2.19 Abs700 units in the presence of 2.03 g - 1 protein). The hydrolysate also displayed a moderate nitric oxide-scavenging activity, with an IC50 of 0.53 ± 0.01 g l- 1. This FPH’s free amino acid content is high (almost 5 g l- 1). Results indicate that this hydrolysate may be useful as supplementary protein and antioxidant in animal feed formulations.</p>

A summary of the resource.
Evidence is presented that pyrrolizidine alkaloid acquired by Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) as a larva from Crotalaria foodplants is incorporated in part into the scales of the adult. A single forewing of a male or female moth may contain in the order of 6 to 13 μg monocrotaline in its scale cover or about 1 to 2% of the moth’s systemic monocrotaline content. Based on estimates of the number of scales per forewing, the monocrotaline content of individual scales is calculated to be in the order of 0.1 and 0.2 ng monocrotaline per male and female scale, respectively. This amounts to concentrations of about 1 and 3%, values roughly at a par with the average systemic concentration (0.5–0.6%) previously determined for monocrotaline in Utetheisa. It is argued that the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloid in the moth’s scale coating could account for the promptness with which adult Utetheisa are rejected by spiders. It is suggested further that chemical impregnation of scales with substances deterrent to predators may be more widespread among insects than generally assumed.

Background: Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has pro ven to be a successful strategy for prevent severe infections. CoronaVac and BNT162b2 are the most used vaccines worldwide, but their use in heterologous vaccination schedules is still subjected to evaluation. Methods: Fifty healthy individuals who received heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 were enrolled in a post-vaccination serological follow-up longitudinal prospective study. We evaluated specific serum anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) IgG antibody levels, and their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction with a surrogate neutralization assay. In 20 participants, we assessed anti body binding kinetics by surface plasmon resonance, and Fc-mediated functions by ADCC and ADCP reporter assays. Results: Our baseline seronegative cohort, displayed seroconversion after two doses of CoronaVac and an important decrease in serum anti-RBD IgG antibodies levels 80 days post-second dose. These levels increased significantly early after the third dose with BNT162b2, but 73 days after the booster we found a new fall. Immunoglobulin functionalities showed a similar behavior. Conclusions: The heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 generated an impressive increase in serum anti-RBD specific antibody levels followed by a drop. Nevertheless, these titers remained well above those found in individuals only vaccinated with CoronaVac in the same elapsed time. Serum IgG levels showed high correlation with antibody binding analysis, their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction, and Fc-effectors mechanisms. Our work sheds light on the humoral immune response to heterologous vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2, to define a post vaccination correlate of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and to discuss the scheduling of future vaccine boosters in general population.

myo-inositol phosphates are an important group of biomolecules that are present in the eukaryotic cells. The most abundant member of this family in nature is InsP6, usually called phytate. The importance of the interaction of InsP6 with cations has been recognized during the last years, and any attempt to know the function of this molecule in eukaryotic cells must include the fact that phytate will be strongly associated with simple inorganic and organic ammonium cations in solution. On the other hand, slightly soluble salts play an important role in phosphorous storage in plant kingdom and organophosphates found in soils. This review compiles the efforts during the last ten years to quantify and understand the interaction of InsP6 with different cations, either in solution or in the formation of solid phases. A coordination chemistry’s view is used to describe the interaction of this versatile ligand with cations and organic amines, and how they can determine the self-assembly process in the formation of polynuclear complexes and solid phases

La enfermedad de Huntington (EH), es un trastorno neurodegenerativo progresivo del sistema nervioso central, que afecta específicamente a algunas estructuras cerebrales. Es una patología genética de herencia autosómica dominante de penetrancia completa. Causada por una expansión de tripletes CAG, en el exón 1 del gen HTT que codifica la proteína Huntingtina. Es de expresividad variable con una edad de inicio en la década de los 40 años, y existe una fuerte correlación inversa entre la cantidad de repetidos CAG y la edad de inicio de los síntomas. Factores genéticos y factores ambientales influyen en esta variabilidad. En este trabajo se puso a punto el diagnóstico de Huntington, inexistente anteriormente en nuestro país, y se relacionó la variación en la edad de comienzo de los síntomas tanto con la cantidad de repetidos CAG, como con polimorfismos presentes en genes modificadores. Los polimorfismos estudiados fueron: la expansión CCG y Δ2642 en gen HTT, ApoE, UCHL1 (rs5030732), ADORA2A (rs5751876), PPARGC 1a (rs7665116), HAP 1 (rs4523977). Por tratarse de una enfermedad muy poco frecuente, las correlaciones que involucren estudios estadísticos no han sido posibles. Sólo se pueden 10 hacer deducciones caso a caso que permiten una más profunda comprensión de esta patología. El estudio en conjunto de los polimorfismos en los genes modificadores y las expansiones CAG, permitió entender mejor las bases genéticas de esta patología, aportándonos mayor información acerca de la variabilidad en la edad de aparición de los síntomas.
