Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>A great improvement in thermoluminescence response was found, for the first time, for crystallized samples of lead borate glass of composition 33% PbO and 67% B2O3 (% in mol); this response clearly increases with crystallization time. Glass–crystal transformation was characterized by thermal analysis and by scanning electron microscopy. Results indicate the studied lead borate glass–ceramic as a promising material for thermoluminescence dosimetric applications.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In this work we report on an extensive study devoted to obtaining phase pure PrBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ polycrystalline sintered samples. We have prepared samples by a polymeric precursors routine. Several synthesis routes with different heat treatments and atmosphere conditions were performed followed by x-ray diffraction in conjunction with Rietveld refinement, Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Magnetic measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition at low temperatures and paramagnetic behaviour for temperatures above 11 K

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Two novel Cu(II)�/dipeptide complexes containing L-histidyl�/L-glycine and L-histidyl�/L-alanine as ligands were prepared and characterised by infrared and electronic spectroscopies. EPR measurements were also made in solution and in the solid state. Cyclic voltammetric studies were carried out on aqueous solution. The crystalline structure of the [Cu(L-histidyl�/L-glycine)2(H2O)2] �/6H2O was determined by X-ray diffractometry. It crystallises in the space group C2. The Cu(II) is in a tetragonally distorted octahedral coordination, where the basal plane is occupied by N-atoms belonging to the histidine portion. The apical positions are occupied by two molecules of water.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Here, we intend to review those patents related with the technology of dye sensitized solar cells. In particular we discuss patents and papers that enable metal oxide layer to be more controllable and feasible for applications, and new and innovative dyes, sensitizers and electrolytes with promising features. Finally various methods were reviewed for fabricating semiconductor layers and complete DSSC devices focusing on the mass production of photovoltaic cells.

The optical properties and the geometric characteristics of multivacancy graphene quantum dots systems are studied using Density Functional Theory calculations, in a systematic way, in relation to the number of carbon atoms extracted and the relative configurations that could be present in the cluster. The way to characterize these configurations was using the complementary figure model -i.e. the figure formed by the carbon atoms extracted in order that the vacancy could be created-. The number of pentagonal or square figures formed after structure optimization, as well as their relative location, is found to be very relevant to determine the curvature level of the graphene quantum dot, but the occurrence of higher order cycles have a non-negligible role and cannot be ruled out. However, this occurrence is much dependent on the specific multivacancy to be studied and prevents to reach more accurate models that could allow the prediction of the magnitude of the curvature. We found unexpected instability in dendritic-like vacancies and we suggest that the non-periodic character of the graphene quantum dot, in contrast to graphene, would prevent such vacancies to be relaxed in a higher extension, causing this kind of systems to be less stable than, for example, zigzag complementary figures systems.

<p>The detection of small molecules in living cells using genetically encoded FRET sensors has revolutionized our understanding of signaling pathways at the sub-cellular level. However,<br />engineering fluorescent proteins and specific binding domains to create new sensors remains challenging because of the difficulties associated with the large size of the polypeptides involved, and their intrinsically huge conformational variability. Indeed, FRET sensors’ design still relies on vague structural notions, and trial and error combinations of linkers and protein modules. We recently designed a FRET sensor for<br />the second messenger cAMP named CUTie (Cyclic nucleotide Universal Tag for imaging experiments), which granted sub-micrometer resolution in living cells. Here we apply a combination of sequence/structure analysis to produce a new-generation FRET sensor for the second messenger cGMP based on Protein kinase G I (PKGI), which we named CUTie2. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations achieved an exhaustive<br />sampling of the relevant spatio-temporal coordinates providing a quasi-quantitative prediction of the FRET efficiency, as confirmed by in vitro experiments. Moreover, biochemical characterization showed that the cGMP binding module maintains virtually the same affinity and selectivity for its ligand thant the full-length protein. The computational approach proposed here is easily generalizable to other allosteric protein modules, providing a cost effective-strategy for the custom design of FRET sensors.</p>

Herein, we studied [2 + 2] and [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions between maleimides and free-standing graphene, epitaxial graphene, and graphene deposited over hydrogen terminated SiC. These reactions are strongly endergonic with a ΔGtoluene°298 close to 73 kcal/mol. The inclusion of solvent effects revealed that the reaction became even less favorable in condensed phase as compared with the gas phase process. For epitaxial graphene or graphene deposited on top of hydrogen terminated SiC, we found that the substrate has a small influence over the cycloaddition reaction energies. In effect, they were strongly endergonic much like the case of free-standing graphene. Although the fluorinated maleimides used in recent experiments proved to be more reactive than tetracyanoethylene and maleic anhydride, their cycloaddition reactions with graphene are still strongly endergonic. However, our calculations indicated that these reactions are more likely to occur on the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene.

A summary of the resource.
By means of first principles calculations we investigated the occurrence of cycloaddition reactions on a buffer layer of graphene on silicon carbide. We found that there is a strong correlation between the number and position of the interface bonds and the cycloaddition products. In contrast with results obtained for freestanding graphene, we found that for a buffer layer of epitaxial graphene, the unusual 1,3 cycloaddition of benzynes was preferred over the [4+2] and [2+2] paths. We show that the bonds formed between graphene and the substrate guide the chemical processes occurring on graphene. In turn, the chemical reactivity of supported graphene can be completely different as compared with freestanding graphene, making unfavorable processes the preferred ones. We expect that the results presented open a new direction to attain chemical functionalization of graphene.

<p>Six strains of Toxoplasma oocysts were used to infect groups of 4–24Wistar rats, with each rat being fed 101–104 oocysts from a single strain. After 2 months, the rats were killed, their brains screened for Toxoplasma cysts and then bioassayed in mice if negative. Toxoplasma was either observed in the form of brain cysts or was recovered using the bioassay, from 113 out of 138 (82%) rat brains. As few as ten oocysts were capable of initiating a brain infection that lasted for at least 2 months in eight of the nine rats inoculated. However, judging from bioassay 102–104 oocysts did not give rise to progressively higher rates of infection. Brain cysts were seen in only 68 of 138 rats (49%). The number of Toxoplasma cysts formed in the brains of rats was generally in the order of tens to hundreds. The frequency of infection in the brains with Toxoplasma and the number of brain cysts formed appeared to be influenced by the individual resistance of the rats as well as by the doses of oocysts and the Toxoplasma strains used. The information gathered is considered to be a basis for a rat model of immunity against acquired toxoplasmosis.1–6/1,000 births. Although most infected newborns are asymptomatic at birth, adverse sequelae may develop later in life in a large proportion of the affected patients (Remington and Desmonts 1990). In addition, reactivation of a latent Toxoplasma gondii infection from brain cysts is often fatal in patients who are immunosuppressed in the course of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), during cancer therapy or after organ transplantation (Luft and Hafner 1990). Of the several approaches that can be used to prevent toxoplasmosis in animals and humans, considerable experimental effort has been put into developing protection for animals by vaccination (Nielsen et al 2000). However, to date no efficient vaccination strategy exists to prevent cyst formation in either animals or in humans. Brain cyst formation in rats was reviewed by Dubey and Frenkel (1998) and the burden of brain cysts in rats fed on cysts was investigated by Freyre et al. (2001b). The purpose of this present study was to add to the existing information by investigating the influence of the strain and dose of Toxoplasma cysts on the numbers of cysts formed in the brains of Wistar rats, as a preliminary step towards developing a rat model of immunity against acquired toxoplasmosis.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The use of biocontrol agents to inhibit postharvest pathogens has shown great potential. However, there have been many obstacles to their implementation as a feasible commercial strategy. A lack of understanding of how to integrate microbial agents with commercial processing practices in packing houses has been one of the main problems. Many physical and chemical treatments intended to minimize postharvest losses are also being incorporated into standard processing lines. A detailed analysis of the possible interactions of these alternative treatments with biocontrol agents is essential to achieve successful results. This paper reports a number of treatments that are used in combination with biocontrol agents and discusses the potential of an integrated approach to minimize postharvest losses.

We here analysed whether the cytokine responses in early and late experimental infection with Echinococcus granulosus depend on the dose of parasites to which the host is exposed. To this purpose Balb/c mice were inoculated intraperitoneally (ip) with either 500 or 2000 protoscoleces. Splenocytes of mice were obtained at days 3, 7, 14 and 21 and also on week 37 post-infection and cultured in vitro with protoscolex antigens. Type-1 and type-2 cytokines were analysed in supernatants by ELISA. Results showed that the inoculation of 500 protoscoleces induced an early type-0 and a late type-2 cytokine response, whereas the inoculation of 2000 protoscoleces induced an early type-2 and a late type-0 cytokine response. Parasite growth was lower in the group inoculated with the low infective dose. These results indicate that the cytokine response during the infection by the helminth E. granulosus depends on the dose of parasites to which the host has been exposed.

Four new palladium(II) complexes with the formula Pd(L)2, where L are quinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4- dioxide derivatives, were synthesized as a contribution to the chemistry and pharmacology of metal compounds with this class of pharmacologically interesting bioreductive prodrugs. Compounds were characterized by elemental, conductometric and thermogravimetric analyses, fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS) and electronic, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. The complexes were subjected to cytotoxic evaluation on V79 cells in hypoxic and aerobic conditions. In addition, a preliminary study on interaction with plasmid DNA in normoxia was performed. Complexes showed different in vitro biological behavior depending on the nature of the substituent on the quinoxaline ring. Pd(L1)2 and Pd(L2)2, where L1 is 3-aminoquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide and L2 is 3-amino-6(7)-methylquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide, showed non selective cytotoxicity, being cytotoxic either in hypoxic or in aerobic conditions. On the other hand, Pd(L3)2, where L3 is 3-amino-6(7)-chloroquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide, resulted in vitro more potent cytotoxin in hypoxia (P = 5.0 lM) than the corresponding free ligand (P = 9.0 lM) and tirapazamine (P = 30.0 lM), the first bioreductive cytotoxic drug introduced into clinical trials. In addition, it showed a very good selective cytotoxicity in hypoxic conditions, being non-cytotoxic in normoxia. Its hypoxic cytotoxicity relationship value, HCR, was of the same order than those of other hypoxia selective cytotoxins (i.e., Mitomycine C, Misonidazole and the N-oxide RB90740). Interaction of the complexes with plasmid DNA in normoxia showed dose dependent ability to relax the negative supercoiled forms via different mechanisms. Pd(L2)2 introduced a scission event in supercoiled DNA yielding the circular relaxed form. Meanwhile, both Pd(L1)2 and Pd(L3)2 produced the loss of negative supercoils rendering a family of topoisomers with reduced electrophoretic mobility. Pd(L3)2 showed a more marked effect than Pd(L1)2. Indeed, for the highest doses assayed, Pd(L3)2 was even able to introduce positive supercoils on the plasmid DNA.

5-Phenylethenylbenzofuroxans have displayed in vitro and in vivo activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of American Trypanosomiasis. On the basis of benzofuroxans pre-clinical studies we evaluated the potential of six 5-phenylethenyl derivatives to induce cytotoxicity, mutagenicity and genotoxicity using different in vitro models. Cytotoxic effects were evaluated using a set of cells, mammal pre-monocytic macrophages, V-79 lung fibroblast fromChinese hamster, and colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cells, in the MTT viability assay. Mutagenicity was tested in the Ames assay using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 strain with and without metabolic activation by S9-rat liver homogenate. The genotoxic potentials were evaluated with the alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) in V-79 cells. In view of the Ames test results we study whether the main mammals’ phase I metabolites, the corresponding o-nitroanilines, are involved in the mechanism of mutagenicity. These metabolites are produced by NADPH-dependent enzymes in cytosol and by xanthine oxidase and cytochrome P450 in microsomes fromrat liver.Amongthem, the electronic property of phenyl substituent seems to be responsible for this effect. It could be pointed out that the equimolecular mixture of compounds 1 and 2 (5Eand 5Z-(2-phenylethenyl)benzofuroxan, respectively) could be used in further clinical studies as anti-T. cruzi drug.
