A summary of the resource.
<p>Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection has a prevalence of 70% in the human population. Treatment is based on acyclovir, valacyclovir, and foscarnet, three drugs that share the same mechanism of action and of which resistant strains have been isolated from patients. In this aspect, innovative drug therapies are required. Natural products offer unlimited opportunities for the<br />discovery of antiviral compounds. In this study, 28 extracts corresponding to 24 plant species and 4 alga species were assayed in vitro to detect antiviral activity against HSV-1. Six of the methanolic extracts inactivated viral particles by direct interaction and 14 presented antiviral activity when incubated with cells already infected. Most interesting antiviral activity values obtained are<br />those of Limonium brasiliense, Psidium guajava, and Phyllanthus niruri, which inhibit HSV-1 replication in vitro with 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of 185, 118, and 60 μg/mL, respectively. For these extracts toxicity values were calculated and therefore selectivity indexes (SI) obtained. Further characterization of the bioactive components of antiviral plants will pave the way for the discovery of new compounds against HSV-1.</p>

Furoxans are interesting biological active compounds. Recent studies demonstrate that they are cytotoxic under aerobic conditions. This paper shows that this cytotoxicity could be related with ELUMO, calculated LogP and Mulliken charge on heterocycle nitrogen 2 calculated at ab initio level (3-21G* basis). It was possible to propose a tentative mechanism of cytotoxicity and structural modifications to modulate the cytotoxic potency of furoxan derivatives.

The classification of processed foods plays a pivotal role in shaping public health policies and research. While systems such as NOVA categorize foods based on processing level, they have been criticized for definitional ambiguity and for conflating technological, nutritional, and commercial dimensions. This study aimed to contribute to the ongoing debate by applying a data-driven, unsupervised clustering approach to a comprehensive database of 7284 packaged food and beverage products available in the Uruguayan market. Products were grouped based on nutritional composition and food additive disclosure using non-hierarchical clustering based on Gower distances. Nineteen distinct clusters were identified, each characterized by unique nutrient and additive profiles. Principal Component Analysis and heatmap visualizations revealed substantial heterogeneity in formulation both within and across traditional product categories and subcategories. Clusters differed markedly in their use of specific additives, such as acidity regulators, antioxidants, and humectants, demonstrating that additive combinations reflect distinct technological strategies. Notably, additive disclosure did not consistently align with nutrient profiles, reinforcing the multidimensional nature of food formulation. These results call for more granular classification approaches that move beyond prototypical products within categories and explicitly integrate both nutrient profiles and additive disclosure. Developing multidimensional indexes of food formulation could enhance risk assessment and clarify how specific formulation strategies relate to health outcomes, ultimately enabling more precise and effective public health nutrition policies.

DDRs are uniquely positioned to function as sensors for extracellular matrix (ECM) and to regulate a wide-range of cell functions from migration and proliferation to cytokine secretion and ECM homeostasis/remodeling. While activation of DDRs by ECM collagens is required for normal development and tissue homeostasis, aberrant activation and function of these receptors following injury or in disease is detrimental. Both DDRs are indicated to play key roles in development and metastasis of various types of cancer. In spite of this, the mechanisms whereby DDRs contribute to tumor formation and cancer progression are poorly understood. Among reproductive system cancers, epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and prostate cancer (PCa) result in high rates of morbidity and mortality. In EOC and PCa, atypical expression of DDRs are indicated to function in malignancy and metastasis. The molecular mechanisms underlying how DDRs contribute to these and other pathologies need to be understood to find new markers and for development of therapeutic agents for treatment of disease. This is particularly the case for EOC in which mechanisms explaining the atypically high levels of DDR1 at initial and late stages of disease have not been described. We first outline studies showing an essential role for DDR2 in steroidogenesis and gamete development in ovary and testes. We then focus on what is known on the role of DDR1 and DDR2 in PCa and DDR1 in EOC. Finally, we speculate on possible functions DDR1 could be playing in different stages of EOC disease. Interactions between ECM proteins and cell surface receptors are well-known to play key roles in regulation of cell behavior and determining physiological function. The switch from DDR2 expression in healthy ovaries to that of DDR1 in initial and late stages of EOC disease provides an experimental system to investigate to what extent ECM and DDR signaling enables malignant transformation.

Benzyl alcohol and other benzenoid-derived metabolites of particular importance in plants confer floral and fruity flavors to wines. Among the volatile aroma components in Vitis vinifera grape varieties, benzyl alcohol is present in its free and glycosylated forms. These compounds are considered to originate from grapes only and not from fermentative processes. We have found increased levels of benzyl alcohol in red Tannat wine compared to that in grape juice, suggesting de novo formation of this metabolite during vinification. In this work, we show that benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol are synthesized de novo in the absence of grape-derived precursors by Hanseniaspora vineae. Levels of benzyl alcohol produced by 11 different H. vineae strains were 20–200 times higher than those measured in fermentations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. These results show that H. vineae contributes to flavor diversity by increasing grape variety aroma concentration in a chemically defined medium. Feeding experiments with phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine, p-aminobenzoic acid, and ammonium in an artificial medium were tested to evaluate the effect of these compounds either as precursors or as potential pathway regulators for the formation of benzenoid-derived aromas. Genomic analysis shows that the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL) pathways, used by plants to generate benzyl alcohols from aromatic amino acids, are absent in the H. vineae genome. Consequently, alternative pathways derived from chorismate with mandelate as an intermediate are discussed.

This paper reports the production of monoterpenes, which elicit a floral aroma in wine, by strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Terpenes, which are typical components of the essential oils of flowers and fruits, are also present as free and glycosylated conjugates amongst the secondary metabolites of certain wine grape varieties of Vitis vinifera. Hence, when these compounds are present in wine they are considered to originate from grape and not fermentation. However, the biosynthesis of monoterpenes by S. cerevisiae in the absence of grape derived precursors is shown here to be of de novo origin in wine yeast strains. Higher concentration of assimilable nitrogen increased accumulation of linalool and citronellol. Microaerobic compared with anaerobic conditions favored terpene accumulation in the ferment. The amount of linalool produced by some strains of S. cerevisiae could be of sensory importance in wine production. These unexpected results are discussed in relation to the known sterol biosynthetic pathway and to an alternative pathway for terpene biosynthesis not previously described in yeast.

Muchas industrias generan un gran volumen de aguas residuales que contienen col-orantes, los cuales son compuestos tóxicos y recalcitrantes. El objetivo principal de este estudiofue examinar la capacidad bioadsortiva de la biomasa de la levadura antártica Debaryomyceshansenii F39A, en presencia de los colorantes azul reactivo 19 y rojo reactivo 141. Se estudiaronalgunas variables del proceso, incluyendo el pH, la concentración de colorante y de adsorbenteutilizada y el tiempo de contacto. La capacidad de adsorción se incrementó al aumentar laconcentración del adsorbato hasta 350 mg/L. Los datos de las isotermas obtenidas experimen-talmente se ajustaron con el modelo de Langmuir, donde la capacidad máxima de adsorción(Qmáx) para ambos colorantes se encuentra dentro del rango 0,0676-0,169 mmol/g de biomasa.A una concentración inicial de 100 mg/L de adsorbato en presencia de 2 g/L de adsorbente a20 ? 1 ?C y un valor de pH = 6, D. hansenii F39A fue capaz de adsorber aproximadamente un 90%del rojo reactivo 141 y un 50% del azul reactivo 19. Cuando la concentración de biomasa seincrementó (6 g/L), la remoción del azul reactivo 19 alcanzó el 90%. El proceso de adsorciónpara cada colorante sigue una cinética de pseudo segundo orden. D. hansenii tiene el potencialde remover eficientemente los colorantes estudiados, a través de un proceso de bioadsorcióny puede considerarse una alternativa a otros materiales adsorbentes de mayor costo.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently published a guideline that recommends against the use of nonsugar sweeteners. Food labels are a key source of information for consumers, to enable them to make informed decisions regarding the consumption of food additives. However, discrepancies in the concepts and categorizations of sweeteners in labeling recommendations and regulations may influence the results of studies on the prevalence of sweeteners in foods. This study aimed to analyze the scientific literature related to the declaration of sweeteners on food labels. Focus was placed on methodological issues related to data collection and analysis, including the categorization of sweeteners, as well as on the reported prevalence of sweetener declaration on food labels. A scoping review was conducted based on a search for terms related to sweeteners, food labeling, and packaged foods. Nine studies, published between 2012 and 2022, were included. Variability among studies was observed in terms of data collection methods, approaches for identifying the sweeteners declared on food labels, the criteria for categorizing sweeteners, and the definitions underlying the categorization. Moreover, there was a lack of standardization in the bibliographic sources consulted in formulating the categorization, and failure to report specific sources, leading to heterogeneity in the substances regarded as sweeteners. The prevalence of the declaration of sweeteners in food labeling ranged from less than 1% to 43.6%. The findings of the present work emphasize the need to standardize the methodologies used for the identification of sweeteners declared on food labels and the criteria for their categorization.

Single-dose azithromycin therapy has recently been used in Uruguay for the treatment of uncomplicated gonococcal infections. As part of an active surveillance study to monitor the emergence of antibiotic resistance in gonococcal isolates, we examined the levels of azithromycin susceptibility in 51 consecutive isolates obtained from males with uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis. Isolates with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin (MICs, 0.25 to 0.5 μg/ml) were common, and these isolates often displayed cross-resistance to hydrophobic antimicrobial agents (erythromycin and Triton X-100). Resistance to erythromycin and Triton X-100 is frequently due to overexpression of the mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump mediated by mutations in themtrR gene, which encodes a transcriptional repressor that modulates expression of the mtrCDE operon. Accordingly, we questioned whether clinical isolates that express decreased azithromycin susceptibility harbor mtrR mutations. Promoter mutations that would decrease the level of expression ofmtrR as well as a missense mutation at codon 45 in themtrR-coding region that would result in a radical amino acid replacement within the DNA-binding motif of MtrR were found in these strains. When these mutations were transferred into azithromycin-susceptible strain FA19 by transformation, the susceptibility of gonococci to azithromycin was decreased by nearly 10-fold. The mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump system was responsible for this property since insertional inactivation of themtrC gene resulted in enhanced susceptibility of gonococci to azithromycin. We conclude that the mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump can recognize azithromycin and that the emergence of gonococcal strains with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin can, in part, be explained by mtrR mutations.

Doping leading to low electrical resistivity in electrodeposited thin films of Cu2O is a straightforward requirement for the construction of efficient electronic and energy devices. Here, Bi (7 at. %) doped Cu2O layers were deposited electrochemically onto Si(100) single-crystal substrates from aqueous solutions containing bismuth nitrate and cupric sulfate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that Bi ions in a Cu2O lattice have an oxidation valence of 3+ and glancing angle X-ray diffraction measurements indicated no presence of secondary phases. The reduction in the electrical resistivity from undoped to Bi-doped Cu2O is of 4 and 2 orders of magnitude for electrical measurements at 230 and 300 K, respectively. From variations in the lattice parameter and the refractive index, the electrical resistivity decrease is addressed to an increase in the density of Cu vacancies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported the experimental findings. The DFT results showed that in a 6% Bi doped Cu2O cell, the formation of Cu vacancies is more favorable than in an undoped Cu2O one. Moreover, from DFT data was observed that there is an increase (decrease) of the Cu2O band gap (activation energy) for 6% Bi doping, which is consistent with the experimental results.

The carabid beetle Galerita lecontei has a pair of abdominal defensive glands that secrete a mixture of formic acid, acetic acid, and lipophilic components (long-chain hydrocarbons and esters). Formic acid, at the concentration of 80%, is the principal constituent. The beetle ejects the secretion as a spray, which it aims accurately toward parts of the body subjected to assault. At full capacity, the glands store 4.5 mg of formic acid (3% of body mass), enough for upward of six ejections. The beetle reloads the glands at a rate of 126 μg of formic acid per day. For the approximately 500 secretory cells of the glands, this means an hourly output of 10 ng of formic acid per cell, or about 5% of cell volume. Replenishing empty glands to their full formic acid load takes the beetle an estimated 37 days. Replenishing the 0.7 mg of formic acid expended in a single discharge takes 5.5 days.

<p>The degradation of the postharvest fungicides imazalil, orthophenylphenol, and pyrimethanil was studied<br />on Clementine mandarins during packinghouse storage for a 28 day period at 4 �C. Fruits to which<br />orthophenylphenol was applied, were treated with imazalil and pyrimethanil at doses of 1000 and<br />2000 mg L�1, using cascade application for the later and cascade and wax for the former. The decay of<br />the three fungicides was evaluated using an in-house validated analytical procedure that includes the<br />extraction and dispersive clean up of the samples followed by the GC–MS determination of the pesticide<br />residues. The impact of fruit storage time on pesticide residues concentration was assessed. The residues<br />found for the different application technologies were always below the established Maximum Residue<br />Limits by the Codex Alimentarius and the European Union (5 mg kg�1 for imazalil, 7 and 8 mg kg�1 for<br />pyrimethanil, and 10 mg kg�1 and 5 mg kg�1 for orthophenylphenol). The fungicides dissipated differentially.<br />Pyrimethanil showed little degradation, if any, at both tested concentrations, but the half-life of<br />imazalil on the fruit was 15–18 days, independent of the application technology. Orthophenylphenol<br />dissipated with a half-life of 15 days. The initial imazalil residue found after cascade treatment was<br />not significantly different between the doses studied (p < 0.5), whereas when the fungicide was included<br />in wax as an emulsifiable concentrate the initial and final imazalil residues were significantly different.<br />Final residue levels after 28 days of storage were 0.12–0.24 mg kg�1 for imazalil, 0.68 mg kg�1 for<br />2-phenylphenol and 0.56 mg kg�1 for pyrimethanil for all the evaluated treatments</p>

A summary of the resource.
This study investigated the degradation of proteins and amino acids by Caloramator proteoclasticus, an anaerobic thermophilic (55 °C) fermentative bacterium isolated from an anaerobic bioreactor. Experiments were performed in the presence and absence of Methanobacterium thermoformicicum Z245, a methanogen that can use both hydrogen and formate for growth. Higher production rates and yields of the principal fermentation products from gelatin were observed in methanogenic coculture. The specific proteolytic activity in coculture tripled the value obtained in pure culture. C. proteoclasticus fermented glutamate to acetate, formate, hydrogen and alanine. In methanogenic coculture, a shift towards higher amounts of acetate and hydrogen with no alanine production was observed. Extracts of glutamate-grown cells possessed high activities of β-methylaspartase, a key enzyme of the mesaconate pathway leading to acetate. The presence of two enzymes (alanine-α-ketoglutarate aminotransferase and NADH-dependent alanine dehydrogenase) usually involved in the biosynthesis of alanine from pyruvate was also detected. The fermentation of amino acids known to be oxidatively deaminated (leucine and valine) was improved in the presence of both methanogenesis and glycine, a known electron acceptor in the Stickland reaction. Culture conditions seem to be very important in the way C. proteoclasticus disposes of reducing equivalents formed during the degradation of amino acids.

This research focuses on the identification and quantification of lithium-ion battery degradation indicators at low temperatures. We studied the cycling aging of 18,650 commercial NMC lithium-ion batteries at 10 ◦C. For this purpose, we carried out life cycle tests and performed Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (GITT) tests in the voltage range for the charge and discharge processes for different States of Health (SoH). The diffusion time constant and the ohmic overpotential were determined from GITT for different SoH. As the batteries degrade both parameters increase. A degradation mechanism associated with faradaic effects (increase in ohmic drop overpotential) and a thermodynamic effect associated with changes in the active material (diffusional time constant) is observed. Furthermore, we performed Electrochemical Voltage Spectroscopy studies through Incremental Capacity (IC) curves. IC curves peaks and valleys are associated with battery phase transformations due to aging phenomena. Each peak has a unique peak height, area, and position associated with a degradation mode. This research focuses on the IC curves derived from the discharge capacities at 3A and OCP (Open Circuit Potential) to study the thermodynamic and faradaic effects separately. The peak at 3.6 V and 3.4 V for the 3A and OCP studies, respectively, is the main feature for the detection of the degradation mechanism. The valley in the OCP curves intensifies with the decrease in SoH and is shifted to lower potentials, an effect that is not observed in the 3A curves. So, we could associate this with thermodynamic effects, Loss of Lithium Inventory (LLI) and Loss of Active Material (LAM) of both the positive electrode and the negative electrode.

The ΔfH0 (298 K) of HSO2 is estimated as through calculations using Dunning's basis sets up to cc-pV6Z and Pople's 6-311+G(3df,2p). This estimation differs from previous G2 calculations and from our own G3 result of −37.1 kcal/mol. Similarly, the ΔfH0 (298 K) CH3SO2 is estimated as −56.3 kcal/mol, in good agreement with Benson's prediction, −55.0 kcal/mol, and again in disagreement with the G2 value, −47.6 kcal/mol. Finally, we propose a revision of the enthalpy of formation of the CH3S radical. On the basis of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose a value of , slightly lower than the presently accepted value of .

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A new “non-terrestrial” molecule present in the envelope of the carbon star IRC + 10216 was described for the first time in 1986. Recently, this molecule was identified as the free radical MgNC, the first Mg-containing molecule in space. We present here the first density functional study performed on this radical, as well as on its isomer MgCN and the transition state connecting these species. It is shown that the optimum geometry obtained at the Becke3LYP/6-311+G(3df) level leads to the most exact rotational constants Be and Bo calculated up to now. It is also shown that the energy differences between the three species are completely in agreement with the best ab initio calculations available. Furthermore, it is shown that the popular MP2 method fails for this system in the same way that has been demonstrated for other radicals.
