During the iodoetherification of chiral and conformationally restricted 3‐butenyl carbinols to give 2,5‐disubstituted THFs, the presence of an ester in the side chain exerts a profound effect on the chemo‐ and diastereoselectivity of the reaction. When submitted to standard iodoetherification conditions, ester‐containing substrates gave diastereomeric mixtures of THFs, together with variable amounts of iodohydrins. Conversely, when the ester group was reduced to an alcohol or ether, the corresponding trans‐THFs were obtained more quickly, with complete diastereoselectivity and without contamination by the iodohydrin. In this paper, the mechanistic details of the iodoetherification of protected 3‐butenyl carbinols are revealed. The results show that the carbonyl group decreases the nucleophilicity of the acetonide oxygen atoms, and stabilizes the reactants by a carbonyl–iodonium through‐space interaction. Additionally, it promotes the formation of a stable seven‐membered‐ring carboxonium intermediate, causing an increase in the activation barriers and a decrease in the reaction diastereoselectivity compared to the non‐ester analogues. Recently, we found that the Diels–Alder reaction between levoglucosenone and the acetonide of (1S,2R)‐3‐methylcyclohexa‐3,5‐diene‐1,2‐diol occurs through the most hindered face of the diene. This unexpected facial selectivity has no precedent for di‐O‐isopropylidene‐protected dienes, and the reasons behind it remain unclear. Here, we expand on our earlier findings, computationally assessing the structural and electronic factors responsible for this unforeseen stereoselectivity. The B3LYP/6‐31+G(d,p) results identify the three main adducts (β‐endo‐ortho:α‐endo‐meta:α‐exo‐ortho), giving a product ratio (63:9:28) that is in line with the experimental value (64:16:10). The β‐endo attack allows to maximize the electrostatic attraction between the reactants, giving rise to dipolar C−O⋅⋅⋅H−C interactions with the isopropylidene group at the transition state. The endo/exo preference can be rationalized through electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between the isopropylidene and methylene fragments. Finally, the non‐classical C=O⋅⋅⋅H−C hydrogen bonding stabilizes the ortho transition structures, making them more polar and asynchronous. Los resultados indican que el proceso de conversión en biodiesel de los aceites de soja, girasol, girasol alto oleico y ricino puede realizars con relativa alta eficiencia si eligen convenientemente los parámetros operativos. Sin embargo, se encontró que el material lipídico sometido a las condiciones extremas de temperatura y presión requeridas sufrió un grado de deterioro significativo, produciendo la reducción del porcentaje de los ácidos grasos insaturados, fenómeno que aparece como la principal limitante del contenido de éster del producto. Lemon verbena (Aloysia citriodora Palau) is indigenous to South America and was introduced into Europe. It is cultivated mainly due to the lemon-like aroma emitted from its leaves, which are utilized for the preparation of herbal tea reputed to have antispasmodic, antipyretic, sedative and digestive properties. In this work we introduce the enantiomeric distribution of sabinene and limonene by bidimensional gas chromatography (chiral GC-GC) as a genuine quantitative parameter in order to improve the knowledge so far available on A. citriodora oil. Multivariate analysis afforded information on the similarities and differences of wild and cultivated A. citriodora populations during different seasons in the same environmental conditions. The results indicated that it was possible to discard the environmental and seasonal effect on the chemical composition of A. citriodora for wild and cultivated materials belonging to the same genetic origin. During malolactic fermentation (MLF), lactic acid bacteria influence aroma and flavor of wines by the production of volatile metabolites and the modification of aroma compounds derived from grapes and yeasts. In an effort to isolate these bacteria properties as advantages for winemaking, this study aimed to assess the relative contribution of two aspects: the effects of lactic acid bacteria activity on the volatiles compounds in Tannat wines and the consequences of aging in bottle on aroma compounds produced during MLF. To our knowledge, this is the first report related to the effect of wine aging in bottle on the aroma chemical compounds produced by MLF. Solid phase extraction complemented with chromatographic techniques was used to study the wine aroma compounds. A sensory evaluation of the wines was also performed through descriptive methods. We demonstrated modifications in the concentration of acetates, ethyl esters, and other secondary metabolites during MLF. Major sensorial differences between wines that had undergone MLF were also noted. In addition, some modifications detected in the composition of Tannat wines as a consequence of the aging in bottle contributed to the change in differences between wines with and without MLF and furthermore between strains. These changes probably influence its fruity character. Essential oils of Baccharis uncinella DC and B. dracunculifolia DC collected from different wild populations growing in Bolivia, southern Brazil and Uruguay were analysed using gas chromatography and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry techniques, to check for chemical variability. Cluster analysis led to the identification of two chemotypes for B. dracunculifolia, related to aromadendrane- or cadinane-derived components. As the timing of sampling of the plant material may have an influence on the composition of the essential oil isolated, the seasonal influence at the moment of harvesting was studied for two populations of each species. A new method was developed for analysing 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol in the aroma of red wines using dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry detection (GC–MS). Parameters such as extraction solvent, sample volume and disperser solvent were studied and optimised to obtain the best extraction results with the minimum interference from other substances, thus giving clean chromatograms. The response linearity was studied in the usual concentration ranges of analytes in wines (50–1500 �g/L). Repeatability and reproducibility of this method were lower than 5% for both volatile phenols. Limits of detection and limits of quantification were also determined, and the values found were 28 and 95 �g/L for 4-ethylguaiacol and 44 and 147 �g/L for 4-ethylphenol, respectively. This new method has been used for the determination of the volatile phenols concentration in different samples of Tannat wine affected by Brettanomyces contamination. The cestodes constitute important but understudied human and veterinary parasites. Their surfaces are rich in carbohydrates, on which very little structural information is available. The tissue-dwelling larva (hydatid cyst) of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus is outwardly protected by a massive layer of carbohydrate-rich extracellular matrix, termed the laminated layer. The monosaccharide composition of this layer suggests that its major carbohydrate components are exclusively mucin-type O-glycans. We have purified these glycans after their release from the crude laminated layer and obtained by MS and NMR the complete structure of 10 of the most abundant components. The structures, between two and six residues in length, encompass a limited number of biosynthetic motifs. The mucin cores 1 and 2 are either nondecorated or elongated by a chain of Galpβ1-3 residues. This chain can be capped by a single GalpR1-4 residue, such capping becoming more dominant with increasing chain size. In addition, the core 2 N-acetylglucosamine residue is in cases substituted with the disaccharide GalpR1-4Galpβ1-4, giving rise to the blood P1-antigen motif. Larger, also related, glycans exist, reaching at least 18 residues in size. The glycans described are related but larger than those previously described from an Echinococcus multilocularis mucin [Hulsmeier, A. J., et al. (2002) J. Biol. Chem. 277, 5742-5748]. Our results reveal that the E. granulosus cyst exposes to the host only a few different major carbohydrate motifs. The cellular ligands of this biologically important ‘‘chelatable’’, ‘‘labile’’ or ‘‘transit’’ iron are not known. Proposed ligands are problematic, because they are saturated by magnesium under cellular conditions and/or because they are not ‘‘safe’’, i.e. they allow iron to catalyse hydroxyl radical formation. Among small cellular molecules, certain inositol phosphates (InsPs) excel at complexing Fe3? in such a ‘‘safe’’ manner in vitro. However, we previously calculated that the most abundant InsP, inositol hexakisphosphate, cannot interact with Fe3? in the presence of cellular concentrations of Mg2?. In this work, we study the metal complexation behaviour of inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate [Ins(1,2,3)P3], a cellular constituent of unknown function and the simplest InsP to display high-affinity, ‘‘safe’’, iron complexation. We report thermodynamic constants for the interaction of Ins(1,2,3)P3 with Na?, K?, Mg2?, Ca2?, Cu2?, Fe2? and Fe3?. Our calculations indicate that Ins(1,2,3)P3 can be expected to complex all available Fe3? in a quantitative, 1:1 reaction, both in cytosol/nucleus and in acidic compartments, in which an important labile iron subpool is thought to exist. In addition, we calculate that the fluorescent iron probe calcein would strip Fe3? from Ins(1,2,3)P3 under cellular conditions, and hence labile iron detected using this probe may include iron bound to Ins(1,2,3)P3. Therefore Ins(1,2,3)P3 is the first viable proposal for a transit iron ligand. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of extracts of 10 plant species used in traditional Uruguayan medicine against the phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria spp. The plants were selected on the basis of their reported ethnobotanical uses. Aqueous, saline buffer and acid extracts of different plant species were screened in vitro for their antifungal activity against Alternaria spp. For the antifungal evaluation we used a microspectrophotometric assay. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the extracts were determined. Three solvents were assayed on different tissues of the plants and among the 29 evaluated extracts, 31% of the extracts inhibited growth, similar to the effects of a chemical fungicide. Acid extracts of the plants were more effective than the aqueous or buffer extracts against Alternaria spp. The MIC values of the extracts were determined ranging between 1.25 and 25 μg mL-1. The MFC values of the extracts ranged between 1.25 μg mL-1 (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and 10 μg mL-1 (Cynara scolymus L.). MICs and MFCs values obtained from leaves (Salvia officinalis L. and R. officinalis) and seeds extracts (Salvia sclarea L.) were quite comparable to values obtained with the conventional fungicide captan (2.5 μg mL-1). The extracts of Salvia sclarea, S. officinalis and R. officinalis could be considered as potential sources of antifungal compounds for treating diseases in plants. These extracts showed maximum activity, even at very low concentrations, and the same fungicide effects as chemical fungicide. Arbitrarily defined as organic salts with melting points below 1001C, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained considerable notoriety in the past decade. Owing to their negligible vapor pressure, thermal stability, and tunable solvent properties, these materials have found applications in a wide range of laboratory and industrial processes.1 As part of efforts aimed at better understanding the liquid structure of imidazolium-based ILs, we have shown that intraionic hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions in 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl (1), Figure 1) are evidenced by sizable deuterium isotope effects on the chloride ion 35/37Cl NMR signal (i.e. D35/37Cl(H,D)).2 Measurements obtained on the [C4mim]Cl isotopologues [2-d1]-[C4mim]Cl and [2,4,5-d3]-[C4mim]Cl led to D35/37Cl(H,D) values of up to 2 ppm, and corroborated the presence of H-bonds between the anion and the imidazolium cation protons on the C-2, C-4, and C-5 positions. Recent theoretical studies indicate that H-bonding between the anion and protons along the N-alkyl groups could also have an impact on the structure and dynamics of this class of ILs.3,4 Based on our previous results, these anion–cation interactions could be detected experimentally by measurement of deuterium isotope effects on the 35/37Cl NMR signal of the chloride ion. For this purpose, we decided to synthesize a series of [C4mim]Cl deuterium isotopologues sequentially labeled along the N-alkyl group carbons (Figure 1a–e). These could also be easily converted by metathesis to the corresponding tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate imidazolium salts (i.e. [C4mim]BF4 and [C4mim]PF6), which would be suitable for the study of interionic H-bonds through analysis of deuterium isotope effects on the 10/11B, 19F, and 31P signals of the BF! 4 and BF! 6 anions. In this manuscript we describe a strategy which uses similar routes to minimize the number of distinct reactions needed to prepare these compounds. As detailed below, good yields after the initial deuterium incorporation reaction were achieved in several cases through the combination of well-established chemical transformations into efficient single-step processes.
