The bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae), is an exotic emerging pest in Eucalyptus commercial forests in South America, Africa, and southern Europe. Information on the chemical communication system and reproductive ecology of this insect is scant, and it may be relevant for designing management strategies for eucalypt plantations. Males emit large amounts of 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate, which attracts conspecific adult males but not females. To learn more about the biological function of this putative male-produced pheromone, we quantified this compound in volatile emissions collected from males, females, and couples, in three 4-h collecting periods during the morning, afternoon, and night of a single 24-h cycle. Our results showed that virgin males emit 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate in a diel time pattern, with an almost sevenfold difference between the afternoon emission peak compared to morning or night hours. In addition, we show that in the presence of females, males emit the compound in the same amounts throughout the photocycle. While a definite function cannot yet be attributed to the emission of 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate by T. peregrinus males, our findings point to an intraspecific function, possibly one related to male–male competition. Recently, we found that the Diels–Alder reaction between levoglucosenone and the acetonide of (1S,2R)‐3‐methylcyclohexa‐3,5‐diene‐1,2‐diol occurs through the most hindered face of the diene. This unexpected facial selectivity has no precedent for di‐O‐isopropylidene‐protected dienes, and the reasons behind it remain unclear. Here, we expand on our earlier findings, computationally assessing the structural and electronic factors responsible for this unforeseen stereoselectivity. The B3LYP/6‐31+G(d,p) results identify the three main adducts (β‐endo‐ortho:α‐endo‐meta:α‐exo‐ortho), giving a product ratio (63:9:28) that is in line with the experimental value (64:16:10). The β‐endo attack allows to maximize the electrostatic attraction between the reactants, giving rise to dipolar C−O⋅⋅⋅H−C interactions with the isopropylidene group at the transition state. The endo/exo preference can be rationalized through electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between the isopropylidene and methylene fragments. Finally, the non‐classical C=O⋅⋅⋅H−C hydrogen bonding stabilizes the ortho transition structures, making them more polar and asynchronous. We studied Diels-Alder (DA) reactions onto functionalized graphene. When fluorine, hydrogen or oxygen functional groups are present on one side of the sheet, the DA cycloadditions become significantly more exergonic when performed on the opposite side. Hydrogen is more effective than fluorine and oxygen to promote these cycloadditions. The objectives of the present study were to compare the diet quality, nutritional status and satisfaction with life, food related life and family life between mothers and adolescent children from single and dual-headed households. In Temuco, Chile, families composed of single mothers and married or cohabiting mothers with one child aged between 10 and 17 years answered a questionnaire that included the Adapted Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Satisfaction with Food-related Life (SWFoL) scale and Satisfaction with Family Life (SWFaL) scale. Continuous variables were analyzed using a dyadic hierarchical multilevel mixed model for distinguishable dyads. To analyze nutritional status, the between-dyads independent variable procedure for categorical data was performed using a Mann-Withney U test. Mothers and adolescents from single-headed and dual-headed families did not significantly differ in their AHEI scores. The proportion of overweight and obese mothers and adolescent children was higher in dual-headed households. Type of household did not influence the SWLS, SWFoL, and SWFaL of mothers, whereas adolescents from dual-headed households had higher SWFaL. Strategies to improve diet quality should be developed and implemented regardless of the family structure, yet interventions to improve nutritional status should be targeted at dual-headed households. Also, special emphasis should be given to improving the satisfaction with family life in adolescents from single-headed households. We have investigated whether the chemical components of fetal fluids (FFs), which elicit repulsion in late gestating ewes, are also those responsible for the attractiveness of fetal fluids at parturition. An aqueous fraction of FFs (A1), obtained after extraction with hexane, was tested for repulsion in late-pregnant ewes and for attraction at parturition. We also investigated if the repulsive and attractive characteristics of this A1 fraction were maintained after an additional extraction with dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2) that produced two more fractions (aqueous/high polarity: A2 and dichloromethane/medium polarity: DCM). Thus, late-pregnant ewes were tested for repulsion of aqueous extracts of FFs (A1, A2 and DCM fractions) in a two-choice test of food preference, whereas parturient ewes were tested for attraction toward these same fractions in a two-choice test of licking warm spongy cloths. The A1 fraction was repulsive to late-pregnant ewes and attractive to parturient females. In contrast, neither the A2 nor the DCM fractions were repulsive to late-pregnant ewes, whereas both fractions were attractive to parturient ones. The discordance between the repulsive and attractive properties of the A2 and DCM fractions suggests that the attractiveness of FFs for parturient ewes and its repulsiveness for females outside the peripartum period depend on mixtures of substances that are at least partially different. The aim of the present study was to compare plasma and saliva pharmacokinetic data obtained in healthy subjects after two different phenytoin administration regimens, having the same administration rate but different dosing interval, in order to investigate if efflux transporter induction at the blood brain barrier could be minimized, and hence a new approach for avoiding refractory epilepsy might be proposed. Six from twelve volunteers, to whom 600 mg every 72 h or 100 mg every 12 h of phenytoin were administered during 10 days, completed a two-way, two-period crossover study. Two fractions of stimulated saliva were collected simultaneously with plasma samples throughout a scheduled 24-hour period on day 10, and during the subsequent 4-day washout period. Average plasma (P) concentrations of both the parent drug (p<0.01) and the main metabolite (p-hydroxyphenylphenytoin, p<0.05) showed higher values when 600 mg each 72 h were given. Also, the saliva first-fraction (S1) average concentration was higher (p<0.05) after 600 mg every 72 h. Conversely, S1/P average concentration ratio was higher (p<0.01) after 100 mg every 12 h. Half-lives, metabolic ratios, saliva second-fraction (S2) average concentrations, and S1/S2 ratios of average levels were not significantly different between treatments. Results reveal that, even though the input rate was kept constant, higher doses given at long dosing intervals displayed higher systemic exposures and lower saliva/plasma exposure ratio than lower doses given at short intervals . Our hypothesis, supported by studies carried out with rats and theoretical approaches, is that efflux transporter overexpression at hepatocytes and at salivary cells would be induced by the higher local phenytoin exposures provoked by 600 mg every 72 h and by the persistent systemic exposures provoked by 100 mg every 12 h, respectively. The maintenance of systemic phenytoin concentration would be foreseen as one of the causes leading to antiepileptic treatment refractoriness, since a higher brain-to-plasma transportation of drug could be induced. Maybe once-daily dosing of phenytoin would be preferable to twice or three times a day administration regimens. Despite the fact that avoiding peak-trough oscillation was always the aim of pharmacotherapy, it might be more appropriate for patients under phenytoin treatments to increase both dose and dosing interval in order not to contribute to the installation of pharmacoresistance. Sturgeons are chondrostean fish critically endangered due to anthropogenic loss and degradation of natural habitat and overfishing for meat and caviar production. Consequently, sturgeon aquaculture has extensively developed lately, being Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) the second most important species reared for caviar production. However, Russian sturgeon aquaculture in subtropical countries, such as Uruguay, confronts difficulties because fish have to endure excessive summertime warm temperatures, which weaken their innate defences facilitating opportunistic infections. To address this problem, we look for identifying putative acute phase proteins (APPs), which might be robust serum biomarkers of both infection and chronic thermal stress, applied to monitoring Russian sturgeon health status in farms. We focused on the C-Reactive Protein/Serum Amyloid P (CRP/SAP) pentraxin since the pentraxin family includes well-known APPs, better characterised in mammals than fish. We identified A. gueldenstaedtii CRP/SAP (AgCRP/SAP), as a member of the universal CRP/SAP pentraxin sub-family, and studied AgCRP/SAP involvement in sturgeon response to bacterial challenge and chronic thermal stress, in comparison with A. gueldenstaedtii Serum Amyloid A (AgSAA), a previously described positive APP. Results showed that AgCRP/SAP is a constitutive serum component that remained constant upon Aeromonas hydrophila challenge and chronic thermal stress. Contrastingly, serum AgSAA was subjected to regulation by bacterial and thermal stress challenges, showing a 50-fold increase and 3-fold decline in serum levels, respectively. Overall, results highlight the potential value of AgSAA, but not of AgCRP/SAP, as a biomarker of bacterial infection and the need to continue searching for robust chronic thermal stress biomarkers in sturgeons. Secondary metabolites from plants have been the source of various natural products with anti-insect properties; having some of them already reached the market. In recent years, the drawbacks related to the use of synthetic pesticides have triggered the need to find alternatives and brought about revitalization on bioprospecting programs. In that direction, this work presents the results of a study on a South American native species. The methanolic leaf extract of Clytostoma callistegioides (Bignoniaceae), was hydrolyzed with HCl, and sequentially subjected to Sephadex LH20 and HPLC procedures. Three flavones, not previously obtained from this species, were identified by NMR and UV spectra: 4�-Hydroxywogonin, Acacetin and Galangustin. Two important agricultural pests, Myzus persicae and Rhopalosiphum padi (Hemiptera: Aphididae), were studied in their reluctance to settling on leaf treated with these flavonoids, and the results are here reported in terms of a preference index (PI), calculated as PI = [(%C − %T)/(%C + %T)]; where %C and %T are the percentages of aphids settled on the treated and the control leaf pieces, respectively. While 4�-Hydroxywogonin did not exhibit significant activity against neither of the aphids, Acacetin was active only against R. padi (PI = 0.3 ± 0.1). Further, Galangustin exhibited a better deterrence activity on the settling of both aphids (PI = 0.4 ± 0.1 and 0.8 ± 0.1 for M. persicae and R. padi respectively). Botanical biopesticides constitute an important tool for Integrated Pest Management practices. Uruguay has a great potential for developing botanical biopesticides from its abundant native flora. Dodonaea viscosa Jacq. is a native Sapindaceae that in preliminary studies was shown to possess a potential deterrent activity against insect models. In this work, ethanolic extracts of the leaves of this species were studied. Bioguided fractionation and supercritical fluid extraction led to the isolation of active compounds. For that purpose four insect models were used: Epilachna paenulata, Spodoptera littoralis, Myzus persicae, and Rhopalosiphum padi, which are pests of crops of economic importance. Lupeol, stigmasterol, stigmast-7-en-3-ol, and a labdane diterpene were isolated and showed differential activity against the models. The phytochemical study of Uruguayan specimens of Allophylus edulis (Sapindaceae) yielded the isolation of various natural products being some of them reported for the first time in this species. Although most of them are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom, some revealed in this study to have anti insect properties. Two sesquiterpenes (6,7-Epoxicaryophyllene and spathulenol), two phytosterols (sitosterone and sitosterol), a pentacyclic triterpene (lupeol) and a clerodane diterpene were isolated. 6,7-Epoxycaryophyllene, lupeol and sitosterol showed to be deterrent against the aphid Myzus persicae and the coleopteran Epilachna paenulata. Moreover, the crude ethanolic extract of twigs of A. edulis showed to be deterrent against both insect species being some of its fractions also active against another aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi. Various active compounds against different insect models have been isolated from the twigs extract of A. edulis. Some derivatives of phenazine 5,10-dioxide are selectively toxic to hypoxic cells commonly found in solid tumors. Previous studies of the phenazine 5,10-dioxide mechanism of action indicated that a bioreduction process could be involved in its selective toxicities, maybe as result of its potential HO•-releasing capability in hypoxia. The major unresolved aspect of the mechanism of phenazine 5,10-dioxides is the identity of the reductase(s) in the cell responsible for activating the drug to its toxic form and metabolites. We have studied the metabolism in both hypoxia and oxia of some selected 2-amino and 2-hydroxyphenazine 5,10-dioxides, 1−5, using rat liver microsomal and cytosol fractions. Differential hypoxic/oxic metabolism was found to be correlated to a compoundʼs cytotoxic selectivity but, in general, without metabolic differences between liver microsomal or cytosolic enzymes. Dicoumarol and ketoconazole were found to inhibit the hypoxic metabolism of the most selective phenazine 5,10-dioxide, 1, inferring a role for DT-diaphorase and cytochrome P450. The least hypoxic selective agents, 4 and 5, possess different hypoxia-metabolic profiles as compared to derivative 1, explaining the differential cytotoxic biological behavior. The nonselective derivative, 2, suffered bioreduction in both conditions and, according to the inhibition studies with dicoumarol and ketoconazole, involves both DT-diaphorase and cytochrome P450. The nontoxic derivative, 3, showed poor bioreductive behavior.
