Eight liquid emollients (mineral oil, sunflower oil, squalane, decyl oleate, isopropyl myristate, octyldodecanol, dimethicone, and cyclomethicone) were characterized by instrumental and sensory methods and evaluated to determine the relationship between sensory and instrumental measures. Sensory analysis was carried out by a panel of 14 assessors, who evaluated the following attributes: difficulty of spreading, gloss, residue, stickiness, slipperiness, softness, and oiliness. The physicochemical properties measured were spreadability (at one-half minute and at one minute), viscosity, and superficial tension. Data collected were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), and linear partial least squares regression analysis (PLS). In consideration of their physicochemical characteristics, the studied emollients were sorted into three groups, in which the silicones distinctly separate from the rest. Sensory characteristics enabled the discrimination of four groups of emollients where, besides the two silicones, isopropyl myristate was also differentiated. PLS revealed that emollient sensory attributes could be well predicted by instrumental measurements. Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from aerial parts of Hedyosmum angustifolium (Ruiz & Pav´on) Solms-Laubach and H. scabrum (Ruiz & Pav´on) Solms-Laubach from Bolivia were analysed by GC–FID and GC–MS. Monoterpene hydrocarbons, especially ˛- and ˇ-pinene, and oxygen containing monoterpenes, mainly 1,8-cineole and linalool, were the major constituents found in the oils of H. angustifolium. The oil of H. scabrum was mainly made up of monoterpenes, in particular υ-3-carene, the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons ˛- gurjunene and germacrene D, and 30, 40-dimethoxypropiophenone. For both oils, the enantiomeric distribution of ˛-pinene, sabinene, ˇ-pinene, limonene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol and ˛-terpineol was studied by multidimensional HRGC–HRGC. The main difference between the oils corresponded to the reverse enantiomeric distribution found for linalool, indicating a clear index of different metabolic response in each species. With the aim to improve the performance of enzyme bound to hydrophilic solid phases, their immobilization with polyethylene glycol (PEG) tether have been studied. Sweet potato �-amylase, which hydrolyses the high molecular weight substrate starch and �-galactosidase, which acts on low molecular weight substrates, were used as model enzymes and beaded thiol–agarose as solid phase. Several two step methods for the introduction of the tether using a bis-oxirane homobifunctional PEG as well as a heterobifunctional derivative with a hydroxysuccinimide ester and a maleimide group have been evaluated. Amino groups, native and de novo thiol groups in the enzymes were utilized for immobilization. The best approach was found to be to first introduce the PEG derivative via one of its reactive groups to the enzyme. Subsequently the formed conjugate was bound to the solid phase by the remaining reactive group. Attempts to first introduce the PEG tether into the solid phase were not successful. Ahigh degree of substitution with PEG chains on the enzyme leads to high immobilization yields for both �-amylase and �-galactosidase, but relatively lower gel-bound activity for the former enzyme which is acting on a high molecular weight substrate and thus more sensitive for steric shielding effects. With optimal degree of PEG substitution (which occurred at five times molar excess of the heterobifunctional reagent) the gel-bound activity of �-amylase was increased from 12% (for the derivative without tether) to 31%. Genetic fingerprint profiles, the type and content of glycoalkaloids (GAs) and hemagglutination (HAG) activity against red cells were analysed in accessions of Solanum commersonii, collected from different locations in the south of Uruguay. Thirty-nine accessions from 21 geographically distinct areas were studied. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis revealed a high degree of genetic diversity among the accessions used in the study and effectively discriminated among all of the accessions analysed. There was a very high diversity in the type as well as the concentration of GAs in the samples. Strong HAG activity against rabbit red cells was detected in all the S. commersonii tuber extracts analysed. Such activity was specifically inhibited by N,N#-diacetylchitobiose and N,N#,N$-triacetylchitotriose. Differences in the levels of specific HAG activities were found in the different extracts, which might indicate different levels of the lectin specific for N-acetylglucosamine (Glc-NAc) and its oligomers, in the tubers. The surface structure of polycrystalline rhodium electrodes in contact with aqueous sulfuric acid was modified by chemical etching with hot concentrated acid or by applying fast square waves with an upper potential equal to 1.55 V and a lower potential within the –0.75 V to –0.35 V range. A flow-injection system is proposed for the determination ofmetal-based additives in lubricating oils. The system, operating under computer control uses a motorised syringe for measuring and injecting the oil sample (200 μL) in a kerosene stream, where it is dispersed by means of a packed mixing reactor and carried to an atomic absorption spectrometer which is used as detector. Zinc was used as model analyte. Two different systems were evaluated, one for low concentrations (range 0–10 ppm) and the second capable of providing higher dilution rates for high concentrations (range 0.02%–0.2%w/w). The sampling frequency was about 30 samples/h. Calibration curves fitted a second-degree regression model (r2 = 0.996). Commercial samples with high and low zinc levels were analysed by the proposed method and the results were compared with those obtained with the standard ASTM method. The t test for mean values showed no significant differences at the 95% confidence level. Precision (RSD%) was better than 5% (2% typical) for the high concentrations system. A negatively charged organic molecule acts as a tridentate ligand and binds to the metal through the pyridine nitrogen, the imine nitrogen and the sulfur atom. A chloride ion occupies the fourth coordination site. The planar complexes stack nearly parallel to one another in the lattice conforming a layered crystal structure. The cytotoxic activity of the thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes was tested against the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 human tumor cell lines. The ligands exhibit lower values of GI50 and LC50 than the complexes, H2Bz4Ph being the most active with GI50 < 0.003 lM; LC50 = 13.4 lM; GI50 = 9.3 lM, LC50 = 12.9 lM; GI50 < 0.003, LC50 = 13.8 lM in the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 cell lines, respectively. Among the complexes, [Pd(2Bz4Ph)Cl] (3) exhibited the lowest values of GI50 in the three studied cell lines. This work describes the operation of a system consisting of a denitrifying reactor coupled to a nitrifying reactor used for removal of nitrogen from slaughterhouse wastewater. The nitrogen loading rate varied between 33 and 67 mgN/Ld and average nitrogen removal was 95% and 40%, respectively. Results of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) confirmed the presence of anammox-like microorganisms in the enriched biomass. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Aloysia virgata var. plathyphylla (Verbenaceae) has been investigated for the first time. This species grows naturally in northeast Argentina, where is employed in folk medicine. The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of leaves and young stems at different stages and analyzed by GC-MS. Cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques were used in the investigation of several potential antiprotozoal thiosemicarbazones nitrofurane derivatives. A self-protonation process involving the protonation of the nitro group due to the presence of an acidic proton in the thiosemicarbazone moiety was observed in the first step of a CEErev reduction mechanism of these derivatives. ESR spectra of the free radicals obtained by electrolytic reduction were characterized and analyzed. AM1 methodology was used to obtain the optimized geometries and UB3LYP calculations were performed to obtain the theoretical hyperfine coupling constants. The theoretical study exhibited an unusual assignment of the spin densities showing a free radical centered in the thiosemicarbazone moiety rather than the nitro which are in agreement with the experimental hyperfine pattern. Sinorhizobium meliloti CE52G strain produces a periplasmic laccase that has been purified by a two-step procedure involving heat treatment and immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC). The fraction with laccase activity retained its original activity after 24 h of incubation at pH between 4.0 and 8.0 and after 3 h of incubation at 70 ◦C, pH 7.2 and supplemented with 1.3M(NH4)2SO4. It proved to be a homodimeric protein with an apparent molecular mass of 45 kDa each subunit and an isoelectric point of 6.2. CE52G laccase was inhibited by halides (NaF and NaCl), ions (Fe3+, Mn2+, and Cu2+), sulfhydryl organic compounds (�-mercaptoethanol and reduced glutathione), and electron flow inhibitors (NaCN and NaF). Laccase activity was strongly enhanced by (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4, and K2SO4. The effects of all these agents, as well as the probability of a partially unfolding polypeptide chain to enhance the interaction between the substrate and the active site, are discussed. CE52G laccase is a pH- and thermo-stable protein with promising biotechnological applications. A irradiação de chalconas com microondas na ausência de solvente se mostrou um procedimento de “química verde” para a preparação, em bons rendimentos, de flavanonas. Diferentes catalisadores heterogêneos e catalisadores convencionais foram testados usando-se um forno de microondas doméstico. A irradiação de chalconas com 30% de ácido trifluoroacético, na presença de gel de sílica, levou a formação de onze flavanonas conhecidas e cinco novas, em bons rendimentos. Microwave irradiation of chalcones under solvent-free conditions resulted in a “green-chemistry” procedure for the preparation of flavanones in very good yields. Using an unmodified household microwave oven, different mineral supports and catalysts were tested. By irradiation of chalcones with 30% TFA over silica gel, eleven known flavanones and five new compounds were prepared in high yields. CdTe pure and Bi-doped crystals were grown by the Markov method using an insulating element between the ampoule and the furnace. The numerical simulation performed shows that the presence of a graphite element causes a diminution of the axial temperature gradient, reducing the natural convection inside the growth chamber. This leads to a more stable growth process, improving the crystal quality. Morphological surface studies, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence mapping, support our prediction about the improved crystal quality when the graphite insulating element is included in the growth system. Subject The topic of the resource IMAGENES DIGITALES BIBLIOGRAFIA NACIONAL QUIMICA 2005 Abstract A summary of the resource. CdTe films were grown onto amorphous substrates by electron beam deposition (EB) and by horizontal and vertical physical vapor deposition (HPVD and VPVD). The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by measuring their electrical resistivity and response to X-rays. A 4-Am-thick layer deposited by EB had uniform grain size, preferred growth orientation of (1 1 1). However, the films did not have any response to X-rays since the resistivity of the layer was only 104 V cm. The grain distribution, grain size and roughness of films grown by HPVD were nonuniform. VPVD gave uniform films 35 to 150 Am thick, grain size between 5 and 25 Am, preferred growth orientation of (1 1 1), resistivity of 106 V cm and linear response to X-rays. Correlations between texture and grain size with substrate temperature were established.
