<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This work intended to contribute to the literature on food waste by examining how consumers perceive fruits that deviate from conventional quality standards due to visual imperfections, through the lens of expectation disconfirmation theory. Three specific objectives were addressed: (i) to explore consumers’ sensory and hedonic expectations, as well as their purchase intentions and willingness to pay, based solely on the appearance of suboptimal fruit; (ii) to analyze consumers’ sensory and hedonic perception, as well as purchase intentions and willingness to pay during blind tasting; and (iii) to assess whether expectation disconfirmation is assimilated when consumers are informed about the product’s suboptimality. Two studies were conducted using apples and mandarins, two of the most consumed fruits in Uruguay. Each study compared optimal with suboptimal fruits exhibiting external visual defects that were not expected to affect internal quality. Participants evaluated the fruits under three conditions: (a) blind, (b) visual/expected, and (c) informed. Across both studies, fruits with visual imperfections received significantly lower ratings for appearance, expected liking, purchase intention, and willingness to pay than their optimal counterparts. However, in the blind condition, only minor differences were found between optimal and suboptimal samples, indicating a strong disconfirmation of expectations. In the informed condition, this disconfirmation was not fully assimilated, suggesting that sensory experience has the potential to override negative expectations. These findings highlight the potential of strategies such as in-store tastings and informative messaging about taste and quality to mitigate visual bias and enhance the acceptability of suboptimal fruits. Such approaches may serve as effective tools to reduce consumer-driven food waste.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[We conducted a theoretical characterization of Magnéli phases of titanium oxides, TinO2n-1 (4 ≤ n ≤ 9), using density functional theory (DFT). These suboxides, often formed as intermediate products during the electrochemical oxidation of Ti foils, are relevant for understanding complex mixtures and potential technological applications. Our analysis reveals that structural shear planes, particularly rutile (121) planes, critically influence electronic properties by concentrating Ti 3d electrons. These electrons induce band splitting, generating pseudogaps and impurity states near the Fermi level. Antiparallel spin configurations were consistently the most stable. For n < 9, increasing n reduced the electronic gap toward rutile's value. In Ti9O17, unpaired Ti3+ ions produced local spin densities, asymmetric magnetic configurations, and additional 3d states at band edges, markedly narrowing the gap. Optical absorption, dominated by O 2p–Ti 3d transitions, shifted toward rutile with higher oxygen content, with optical gaps exceeding electronic ones. Reflectivity and refractive index in the visible range followed a consistent trend: rutile exhibited the highest values, Ti4O7 the lowest, Ti6O11 intermediate, and the remaining suboxides nearly equal higher values.]]></dcterms:abstract>

To assess these effects, newly emerged bees were fed a sugar-based diet supplemented with propolis for ten days, and changes in physiological and immune parameters were evaluated. Total lipids, fatty acids, cuticular hydrocarbons and the expression of immune-related and vitellogenin genes were determined. Bees fed with propolis exhibited changes in fatty acid content, cuticular hydrocarbons and immune gene expression, characterized by increased levels of saturated fatty acids, methyl-alkanes and hymenoptaecin expression, along with reduced amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids and alkanes. These findings suggest that long-term dietary intake of propolis may induce physiological changes in worker bees that could affect individual homeostasis and processes mediated by cuticular hydrocarbons. Further studies are required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and evaluate the potential therapeutic role of propolis in beekeeping.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Cobalt-free oxide electrode materials have received increasing attention due to the interest in replacing critical raw materials in clean energy technologies. Among other compositions, La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−d (LSFCu)-based perovskites were proposed in the past for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFCs) applications due to their mixed ionic-electronic conductivity and low polarisation resistance. In this work, novel LSFCubased compositions have been explored for their use as oxygen electrodes in SOFC and Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs). Single-phase LSFCu and fluorite–perovskite nanocomposites with (La,Ce) O2−d–(La,Ce)0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−d composition were studied, the latter resulting from a one-pot cosynthesis of LSFCu and ceria with intermediate compositions reached by substantial cerium–lanthanum cation intermixing after self-organised phase separation. The best performances were achieved for compositionally complex nanocomposites based on 20% and 50% ceria with full-cell power densities of 1.15 and 1.26 W cm−2 in SOFC mode (0.7 V), and current densities of 1.41 and 1.75 A cm−2 in SOEC mode (1.3 V), at 800 °C. Durability tests performed in SOFC mode at 800 °C under high current densities (1 A cm−2) during nearly 900 h confirmed the benefits of optimal ceria incorporation, showing a remarkable reduction (7× lower) in the degradation rate compared to single-phase LSFCu. This work presents a straightforward approach to fabricating cobalt-free oxygen electrodes for SOC technology, opening a new avenue for developing highly complex composition (high entropy) self-organised nanocomposites.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The three crystal structures are polytypes since they share dimeric layers of hydrogen-bonded lapachol molecules, which connect through -stacking within a layer. Adjacent layers in the three compounds are held together by weak van der Waals forces between allylic side chains. However, they adopt distinct stacking modes: successive layers are translated along the c axis in the triclinic form, translated and rotated 90 along the b axis in the first monoclinic form and translated and rotated 90 along the a axis in the new monoclinic form. These variations in interlayer arrangement, arising from different relative orientations of interacting allylic moieties, result in subtle differences in the density of the three forms.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[VOx catalysts have been widely applied in heterogeneous catalysis for decades. Their reactivity in various reactions increases when supported on a suitable solid. Montmorillonites have a great versatility to achieve improved catalytic supports, particularly pillared clays (PILCs) and honeycomb monoliths. This work aims to determine whether the type of support (powder or monolith) prepared from a clay influences the properties of VOx as active phase and which preparative variables (loading or way of incorporation) lead to a higher activity in total acetone oxidation. The catalysts were characterised by μXRF, TGA, XRD, SEM-EDS, TPR and N2-physisorption. It was possible to prepare VOx catalysts on both powdered PILC and monolithic supports. In the case of the catalysts based on PILC, an active phase loading of 20 wt% was found to be the most favourable to achieve 90 % of total acetone oxidation at 300 ºC. For all the catalysts prepared from VOx supported on PILC, mainly V5+ was found in the active phase. In the case of the monolith-supported catalysts, the loading incorporated after two impregnation cycles was lower than 1 wt%. An acetone conversion of 90 % was achieved at 350 ◦C. Performing two impregnation cycles with an intermediate calcination process favoured the formation of V5+ species and their accumulation but did not improve the reactivity towards acetone oxidation. Therefore, the nature of different supports, even if they proceed from the same montmorillonite, and the preparative variables may influence the type of VOx phase formed and its catalytic activity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

These compounds were designed to enhance anthelmintic efficacy while reducing mammalian cytotoxicity. Their activity was assessed against Haemonchus contortus at both the exsheathed thirdstage larval (xL3) and adult stages. Several derivatives showed early anthelmintic activity (24 h) and low cytotoxicity towards murine macrophages. In silico analysis indicated a correlation between MLOGP–TPSA profiles and biological performance, suggesting improved cuticular diffusion. Compared with albendazole and fenbendazole, active compounds exhibited lower toxicity and occupied distinct regions in the physicochemical property space. These results support the potential of these new compounds as selective scaffolds for developing next-generation anthelmintics.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Various technologies have been developed to harness solar energy as a renewable resource to address the increasing global energy demand. In this context, Molecular Solar-Thermal (MOST) energy storage systems have emerged as promising candidates, particularly for overcoming the intermittency inherent in conventional solar technologies. MOST systems rely on molecular photoswitches capable of capturing, converting, storing, and releasing solar energy in a closed, emission-free, and on-demand fashion. Notably, the norbornadienequadricyclane (NBD-QC) couple is one of the most extensively studied. However, its practical application has primarily been confined to organic solvents. Although water-soluble NBD derivatives have been reported, they typically exhibit poor spectral overlap with solar radiation. Building upon these efforts, we synthesized a new NBD derivative incorporating a push–pull electronic system to enhance solar absorption and a hydroxamic acid moiety to ensure full-range aqueous solubility. Its energy storage capabilities were systematically evaluated in aqueous environments, revealing notable pH-dependence. Deprotonation improved both spectral properties and solubility; however, it also reduced the quantum yield and stability compared to the neutral NBD. We quantified energy storage density in solution using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), corroborating these findings with solid-state measurements conducted via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results demonstrated a close agreement between solution and solid-state energy storage density, approaching the threshold of 0.3 MJ•kg 1 for practical applications. Our findings underscore the feasibility of using push–pull functionalized NBD derivatives in aqueous solution under carefully controlled pH-conditions. Moreover, they encourage the exploration of green-solvent mixtures to further enhance MOST performance w]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Warning labels (WLs) are increasingly implemented as front-of-package nutrition labeling tools designed to help consumers make more informed food choices. While a growing body of evidence supports their effectiveness, there remains limited research on how other competing elements on food packaging may influence or undermine their impact. This study examined how health-related packing cues and individual-level characteristics influence attention to front-of-pack WLs, as well as perceived healthfulness and purchase intention among young Colombian consumers after policy implementation. Using an experimental within-subjects design, 102 participants (aged 18–27) viewed food packages containing WLs with and without health-related cues (HC). Eyetracking technology was used to measure visual attention to WLs, followed by a rating task assessing perceived healthfulness and purchase intention. Individual characteristics, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were also collected. Results showed that participants fixated on WLs significantly fewer times when HC were present. Women, individuals with higher education, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds showed greater attention to WLs. Perceived social norms and behavioral control were also positively associated with attention. Interestingly, those who rated WLs as easy to understand fixated on them more quickly and briefly, suggesting more efficient cognitive processing. Packages with HC were rated as healthier and more desirable to purchase, even when WLs were present. WLs can attract attention, but their impact may be diluted by underregulated health-related packaging cues and shaped by individual differences. Policy efforts should consider limiting misleading design elements that compete with WLs. Results also suggest that communication strategies could leverage social norms and perceived label clarity to enhance WLs use, especially among less engaged populations.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Objective: To assess the Food Support Program (Programa de Apoyo Alimentario) implemented by the government of Montevideo to address childhood undernutrition.Design: A mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected through telephone surveys and medical records and analyzed using a prepost design. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with mothers of beneficiary children. Setting: Montevideo, Uruguay.Participants: A total of 120 children participants of the Food Support Program and their mothers.Main Outcome Measures: Household food insecurity, children’s food consumption frequency of 17 categories in the week before the survey, anthropometric data (weight-for-age, length-for-age, and weight-for-length z-scores), and mothers’ perceptions about the program. Analysis: Mixed linear models and content analysis of interviews. Results: Average household food insecurity score decreased by 1.5 points ($P < 0.001$) after 12 months. Average frequency of milk and cheese consumption increased by 1.3 days ($P < 0.001$), frequency of adding oil to meals by 1.0 days ($P = 0.002$), and consumption frequency of sugary foods by 1.4 days ($P < 0.001$). Average z-scores for weight-for-age and weight-for-length increased 0.37 ($P < 0.001$) and 0.31 ($P = 0.001$), respectively. However, length-for-age showed no significant change ($P = 0.90$). Mothers of beneficiary children valued economic support but highlighted gaps in program communication and education, and counseling activities. Conclusions and Implications: The program showed potential to alleviate immediate nutritional deficiencies, but additional and sustained integrated efforts are needed to address chronic undernutrition, food insecurity, and diet quality. In particular, the persistence of food insecurity in half of the households after 12 months underscores the need to reassess the adequacy of the cash transfer amount relative to the affordability of a healthy food basket in the country.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Food insecurity remains a pressing global challenge, particularly for households with children. This study examined the coping strategies adopted by socioeconomically vulnerable households with children up to 3 years old in Uruguay, a high-income Latin American country, by addressing the following objectives: (i) estimate the frequency of different coping strategies, (ii) assess their relationship with perceived food insecurity, and (iii) analyze the influence of socio-economic factors on their use. A nationally representative survey was conducted among households with children attending public childcare centers (n = 1535). The questionnaire included the Food Insecurity Experience Scale and a set of 15 coping strategies derived from prior qualitative research. The findings revealed that 72 % of households had adopted at least one coping strategy in the year prior to the survey. The likelihood of employing each strategy varied with the level of food insecurity experienced by the household. The Rasch model suggested that coping strategies can be represented along a unidimensional continuum of severity: less severe strategies are adopted earlier as food shortages appear, while more severe strategies appear only under more extreme conditions. In addition to food insecurity, socio-economic status and education level were also significant predictors of the use of several strategies. These results suggest that coping strategies and food insecurity indicators capture distinct yet interconnected aspects of economic challenges to access food. Notably, some coping strategies were highly prevalent even among households experiencing mild food insecurity and food security, which may imply negative changes in children’s diet quality.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Among them, copper complexes are emerging as promising candidates for cancer treatment. In this study, a series of complexes [Cu(L-dipeptide)(met-phen)] (where met-phen: 4-methyl-1,10- phenanthroline and 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized and characterized. Solid-state characterization included the determination of the crystal structures of [Cu(Gly-Gly)(4met-phen)]⋅5.5 H2O and [Cu(pheala)( 4met-phen)]⋅3H2O. DNA binding was assessed through the intrinsic binding constant (Kb) and relative viscosity measurements, indicating partial intercalation into calf-thymus DNA. The obtained Kb values were approximately tenfold lower than those reported for analogous complexes with phenanthroline. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was evaluated against a panel of human cancer cell lines: metastatic breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 (triple negative, ATCC: HTB-26), lung epithelial carcinoma A549 (ATCC: CCL-185), ovarian carcinoma A2780 (ECACC 93112519), and nontumoral lung cell line MRC-5 (ATCC: CCL-171). The complexes exhibited potent cytotoxicity, with IC₅₀ values in the low micromolar range, which was significantly more effective than that of cisplatin. [Cu(ala-gly)(5met-phen)] inhibits clonogenic colony formation and induces cellular death above its IC₅₀. These findings evidence that [Cu(L-dipeptide)(met-phen)] complexes are interesting candidates for further in vivo investigation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Valorizing wine industry by-products like Tannat grape seeds offers a sustainable path to recover high-value bioactives and reduce environmental impact. This study aims to achieve their comprehensive value-added utilization by comparing extraction methods to obtain bioactive compounds of interest and by characterizing the functional properties of the solid residue remaining after extraction. Three extraction techniques were applied: the conventional Soxhlet method, using either absolute ethanol or hexane, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), assessing the effects of temperature and ethanol concentration on extraction yield and antioxidant properties. Under optimal conditions (80 ◦C and 67 % ethanol), PLE achieved a higher yield than the conventional method, with elevated α-tocopherol content (844.4 ± 15.3 mg/kg mg/kg) and a lipid fraction dominated by polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily linoleic acid. This fraction showed significant antioxidant capacity as determined by the ABTS and ORAC-FL assays and, in an accelerated oxidation test, increased the induction period of sunflower oil in a concentration-dependent manner, with an effect comparable to that of the synthetic antioxidant BHA. The solid residue generated after PLE was evaluated for its technofunctional properties. It exhibited higher water-holding capacity compared with untreated ground seeds, possibly due to its higher relative fiber content and structural changes induced by processing. Furthermore, the residue retained residual bioactive properties, highlighting its potential as a functional ingredient. Overall, these results support the use of PLE as an efficient strategy for the integral and sustainable utilization of Tannat grape seeds.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Glyphosate is the most-used herbicide worldwide, but few studies address ways to mitigate its environmental impact. Biobeds proved to be an effective tool for reducing point-source pesticide contamination because they can degrade many classes of pesticides. However, as the dissipation of glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA in biobeds has rarely been addressed, a degradation study of glyphosate and its metabolites was conducted. For sample preparation, the biomixture used to construct the biobeds was lyophilised, and various methods were evaluated. Finally, the samples treated with 0.6 M potassium hydroxide analysed using IC-MS/MS enabled the successful determination of glyphosate, AMPA, and N-acetyl glyphosate, with recoveries ranging from 74% to 112% (RSDs <15%) and a Lowest Calibration Level of 1 mg/kg using matrix-matched calibration curves due to significant signal suppression. The methodology was applied to study the degradation of glyphosate and its metabolites in biobeds installed at an aerial application company in Uruguay. The highest glyphosate concentrations detected ranged from 354 to 425 mg kg− 1. After one year 98% degradation was confirmed. AMPA reached peak concentrations of 281 to 335 mg kg−1 and degraded from 80% to 67% by the end of the experiment. N-acetyl glyphosate was not detected. Overall, the methodology proved to be simple, efficient, and robust. IC-MS/MS is straightforward and can be extended to other challenging, complex matrices for glyphosate determination, as no derivatisation is required.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Objective: Product reformulation is a promising strategy to address excessive free sugar consumption among children, yet mandatory programs remain rare across the globe. This study explores reformulation scenarios to reduce free sugar in processed foods without using nonsugar sweeteners in Uruguay, a high-income Latin American country. Methods: A two-stage approach was applied: 1) development of reformulation policy scenarios, and 2) simulation of their potential impact on children's free sugar intake. First, analysis of 2 national dietary surveys (24-h recalls) identified key product categories contributing to free sugar intake among children aged 6–59 mo and 4–13 y. A market database of processed and ultra-processed foods was then used to examine sugar content distribution. Second, the impact of each scenario was modelled by simulating changes in product sugar content within these categories and applying them to intake data. Results: Two policy options, inspired by sodium reduction strategies, were tested: maximum sugar levels and percentage reductions. Simulations indicated that percentage reductions would require reformulation of a larger proportion of products, resulting in greater decreases in average sugar content and higher effectiveness. Only this scenario yielded a statistically significant reduction in modelled free sugar and energy intake among children aged 6–59 mo. For both age groups, reductions approached 10%. Conclusion: Sugar reformulation can lead to meaningful public health gains in the Uruguayan context. However, post-reformulation sugar intake remained above recommendations, highlighting the need for complementary measures to further discourage excessive consumption.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Searching for more effective chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of American Trypanosomiasis, a disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), the development of gold(I) compounds represents a promising strategy. In this work, four new cationic gold(I) compounds, [Au(HL)₂]Cl, where HL = 5-nitrofuryl-containing thiosemicarbazones, were synthesized and characterized in the solid state and in DMSO solution. Their cationic and radical structures were experimentally and theoretically studied. The formation of intermolecular aurophilic interactions and the lipophilicity of the complexes were also analyzed. Three gold(I) compounds displayed micromolar IC₅₀ values (around 10 μM) against T. cruzi bloodstream trypomastigotes and showed moderate selectivity towards the parasites with respect to human cells of endothelial morphology. Two of these complexes were more active than their respective thiosemicarbazone ligands and exhibited antiparasitic activity comparable to that of Nifurtimox. Lipophilicity and the presence of aurophilic interactions appear to play a key role in their antitrypanosomal activity. The active gold(I) compounds induced cytosolic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, disrupted mitochondrial membrane potential, and promoted mitochondrial ROS production, suggesting they may act as crucial precursors to mitochondria-mediated apoptotic cell death. In addition, DNA competitive binding with ethidium bromide, evaluated by fluorescence measurements, demonstrated that the compounds interact with this biomolecule. Overall, these three active gold(I) complexes can be considered promising hits for the development of prospective agents against T. cruzi.]]></dcterms:abstract>
