Es un hecho clásico bien comprobado que la evaporación o calentamiento intenso de soluciones mercuriales, en especial cuando va acompañado de reacciones enérgicas, produce pérdidas de mercurio por volatilización; de ahí la necesidad de emplear aparatos condensadores para recuperarlo; últimamente se han señalado posibilidades de pérdidas de mercurio, por absorción del vidrio. En esta primera comunicación, aún reconociendo el hecho clásico, se establece como posible causa de pérdidas importantes de mercurio, otro proceso que por lo irregular, no concuerda con la teoría de un fenómeno de absorción. El proceso se pone en evidencia calentando en ampollas cerradas a la lámpara soluciones mercuriales de H2SO4 diluído (10ug de Hg al estado de cloruro en H2SO44N),si luego se determina el mercurio por extracción con ditizona se comprueban pérdidas sumamente irregulares entre el 10 y el 60%, pero si se emplean H2SO4 encontrado (35N) o sólo diluído al medio (18N) las pérdidas son nulas; igualmente la recuperación es total si el calentamiento se realiza con H2SO4 diluído en presencia de pequeñas cantidades de HNO3. Hasta el momento no se ha llegado a definir la naturaleza del proceso pero se sacaron conclusiones para evitarlo y por lo tanto establecer las condiciones para conducir la destrucción sulfonítrica sin pérdidas de mercurio; conclusiones confirmadas por los resultados obtenidos en el trabajo adjunto "Dterminación de Mercurio en orinas". Partiendo de la idea, que la determinación de un elemento en un medio orgánico complejo adquiere un máximo de seguridad cuando la mineralización es más perfecta; se estudió una técnica de destrucción sulfonítrica que técnicamente alcanza ese objetivo. La determinación se hace en el residuo sulfúrico, donde previo ajuste del medio (acidez regulada a 3N y equilibrio redox) se extrae por solución clorofórmica de ditizona. Se estudiaron las condiciones para evitar las pérdidas por volatilización y también el proceso irregular de pérdidas por calentamiento de soluciones sulfúricas diluidas. La técnica ajustada permite recuperar el mercurio en una proporción del 95%. Verificada por adición de 0,8 a 10 ug de mercurio a orinas normales. Operando con 67 ml. de orina haciendo la determinación comparativa del mercurio con tipos y blancos se puede alcanzar un límite de positivo neto para contenidos de 12ug de mercurio por litro de orina. El sulfuro de amonio propuesto, se prepara saturando con H2S una solución de NH3, hasta que 0,2 ml. precipitan 8mg. de Cu++. Se dan detalles sobre su preparación y conservación, se establecen las condiciones para su empleo en análisis cualitativo en sustitución del H2S respetando los principios clásicos pedagógicos en la separación del segundo grupo de cationes. Con igual criterio se propone una nueva técnica sobre el empleo de la tiacetamida, haciendo la precipitación en tubo cerrado. Se hace un estudio crítico sobre ventajas o inconvenientes del empleo de los tres reactivos. El balance general es favorable al empleo del sulfuro de amonio: 1o) como se conoce su alcalinidad, es fácil ajustarse al medio conveniente para una precipitación; 2o) el conocimiento de su capacidad precipitante permite ajustar la cantidad a emplear de acuerdo con la toma de ensayo; 3o) como la precipitación se puede hacer en tubo cerrado es posible un mejor rendimiento, siendo mínima su difusión a la atmósfera del laboratorio. Aunque el reactivo envasado en las condiciones que se propone se conserva muchos meses, el mayor inconveniente en su empleo, es que se altera con facilidad una vez abierto el envase que lo contiene.
