Introduction: Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae), called alecrim-do-campo, vassoura, or vassourinha, is the precursor of green propolis that is used in traditional medicine for treating conditions such as dyspepsia, fatigue, inflammation, mild fever, and high blood pressure. This study aimed to summarise botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic reports about B. dracunculifolia and contribute new information on its anatomy and essential oil composition. Methods: This study reviewed international databases, querying keywords related to traditional use, phyto chemicals, biological activities (excluding animal studies), nanotechnology, clinical trials, and toxicity. New contributions regarding micromorphology of leaves and stems were analysed by light and scanning electron microscopy, and crystals were observed by polarised microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and Raman troscopies. Essential oils and hydrolates were generated from distinct sites and analysed using gas graphy/mass spectrometry. Results: Botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic studies of B. dracunculifolia are reviewed herein along with this plant’s use in nano- and biotechnological applications. Major compounds present in the essential oils and volatile extracts of B. dracunculifolia include monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, while the organic tracts are rich in phenolics (flavonoids, caffeoylquinic, and prenylated acids) and terpenoids (diterpenoids and triterpenoids). Conclusions: Previously reported chemical and pharmacologic studies of B. dracunculifolia provided solid formation about the pharmacologic effects of this medicinal plant and the green propolis produced from it. New information reported here on the micromorphology and phytochemistry (essential oil and hydrolate tion) of B. dracunculifolia can be used to facilitate the identification of this plant in comparison to other related species and for quality control.

B. palustris Heering (Asteraceae), has been previously characterized as having an unusual essential oil composition with C9-/C10-polyacetylenes as main components, and mono- and sesqui terpenes/terpenoids at minor or trace levels. In this work, new insights into the chemical composition of this oil are presented: 1. TLC profiles using different visualization reagents for their characterization, 2. chemical analyses combining HRGC/qMS, HRGC/HRMS-TOF and HRGCxHRGC/HRMS-TOF, and 3. radical scavenging activity assay using the DPPH methodology were performed. The best TLC visualization conditions for the polyacetylenic components of the oil were obtaining using UVλ= 365 nm and vanillin/H3PO4, while the original application of NaDi (1-naphtol + N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylendiamine) demonstrated to be the best option to visualize the lachnophyllum acid methyl esters fraction. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry protocols allowed the detection of 63 components in B. palustris oil: 39 of them were identified, 6 tentatively assigned without LRI information, and 18 could not be identified. Most of the identified components were mono- and sesquiterpenes and their derivatives. Ten of them are informed for the first time in B. palustris oil [α-pinene epoxide, rosefuran, epi-cubebol, cubebol, germacrene D-4-ol, junenol, epi-α- cadinol, epi-α-muurolol, germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-1-β-ol and oplopanone]. C9-/C10-polyacetylenes (baccharisdyine/lachnophyllum acid derivatives) were confirmed as the main components of the oil, while other polyacetylenes were tentatively identified and their possible structures are discussed. The deconvolution analyses on HRGCxHRGC/HRMS-TOF allowed the identification of a lachnophyllum lactone isomer (undefined stereochemistry), co-eluting with the (cis)-lachnophyllum acid methyl ester peak. Finally, B. palustris oil was found to be an inactive DPPH radical scavenger.

Several Baccharis species are popularly known in traditional medicine as “carquejas”, “vassouras”, “ervas-santas” and “miomios”, and are used as anti-inflammatories, digestives, and diuretics. This study aimed to investigate the chemical compositions and cytotoxic activities of essential oils (EOs) of six Baccharis species belonging to subgenus Coridifoliae, namely B. albilanosa, B. coridifolia, B. erigeroides, B. napaea, B. ochracea, and B. pluricapitulata. GC/MS analyses of the EOs showed that the oxygenated sesquiterpenes spathulenol (7.32–38.22%) and caryophyllene oxide (10.83–16.75%) were the major components for all the species. The EOs of almost all species were cytotoxic against cancer (BT-549, KB, SK-MEL and SK-OV-3) and normal kidney (VERO and LLC-PK1) cell lines, whereas B. erigeroides EO showed cytotoxicity only against LLC-PK1. This article augments the current knowledge about the chemicalbiological properties of Baccharis subgenus Coridifoliae and discusses the therapeutic potentials of these economically unexploited plants.

Quality control of essential oils is fundamental for verifying their authenticity and confor mity with quality standards, ensuring their safety and regulatory compliance, and monitoring their consistency. Companies that produce or market essential oils routinely evaluate the quality and au thenticity of their products. However, they also must deal with increasing attention to environmental sustainability as well as practical considerations such as productivity, cost, and simplicity of methods. In this study, enantioselective gas chromatography (GC) was adopted to evaluate the quality of sweet and bitter orange essential oils, used as a case study. The analytical conditions were optimized and translated to fast GC to evaluate the impact of this approach on the environmental footprint of the analyses. The greenness of fast GC, compared with conventional GC, was quantitatively evaluated using a dedicated metric tool (AGREE), and important improvements have been calculated. The developed methods were applied to a set of commercial essential oils, and the data about the enantiomeric composition and relative percentage abundance were elaborated through multivariate statistics (principal component analysis). The results showed that fast chiral gas chromatography enables the classification of citrus essential oil samples and can be considered an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach for evaluating their quality.

Volatile stimuli can be detected by specific protein receptors from olfactory epithelium and trans mitted to the brain where finally are interpreted as the sense of smell. The interpretation of odor response complexity provokes the continuous development of instrumental methods for objectively analyze them. Gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) introduction was a milestone in the odor research of, coupling a resolution technique of volatiles mixtures (gas chromatography) with the selectivity and sensitivity of the human olfactory system. GC-O generates a list of the odor descriptor of each peak in a GC run (“aromagram”), indicating which GC peaks (chromatographic resolved components) have or not given aromas/odors associated. The GC-O technique has been profusely employed for the evaluation of aromas in food matrices, but its application to essential oil study is still scarce for the characterization of specific odor active compounds which contribute to the overall olfactory impression. In this chapter an overview of data able to be obtained applying different GC-O methodologies to essential oils are presented, including the procedures and fundaments involved. A summary of the resource.
Monoterpenes are frequently the most common and distinctive components of essential oils. Most of them (the so-called regular monoterpenes) obey the Ruzicka’s Isoprene Biogenetic Rule, which means that the assembly of the bioactive isoprene building blocks (IPP and DMAPP) takes place in a head-to tail fashion. However, in some cases, the occurrence of completely different biogenetic assemblies gives rise to irregular monoterpenes that do not go from head-to-tail. The most common representatives of this type being artemisyl, chrysanthemyl, lavandulyl, and santolinyl skeletons. In addition, rearrangements from regular compounds are also frequently observed giving rise to a new category of irregular monoterpenes, the rearranged ones. Finally, other closely related group is made up by the degraded monoterpenes (or nor-monoterpenes or homoterpenes),compounds that lose carbon atoms during their biosynthesis and that can be considered also as “irregulars”. This chapter discusses the role of these three groups of compounds as all of them have eventually been identified in essential oils. Emphasis will be placed on rearranged monoterpenes, especially ortho-menthane derivatives, due to the paucity of literature dealing with this topic. Carquejol and piquerols, and some of their derivatives are reviewed according to their occurrence, possible biosynthesis, and biological properties. Semi-synthesis will also be discussed, as potentially bioactive compounds could be obtained. Finally, some practical aspects for the preparation of carquejol oxide (7,8-epoxy carquejol), a novel derivative of the ortho-menthane family, will be presented.

<p>The essential oil composition of the aerial parts from Baccharis palustris Heering (Asteraceae), a highly endangered species, was analyzed by GC/qMS, GC/HRMS-TOF, FT-IR, UV–vis and NMR spectroscopy using 1D and 2D techniques. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the essential oil composition of B. palustris, as well as the first phytochemical study on this plant species. The volatile extracts were obtained from different phenologicals stages of plant, at flowering stage (FS) and vegetative stage (VS), where 51 components were identified accounting for 96.3 % and 99.0 % of the oil, respectively. The oil was rich in polyacetylene compounds (> 75 %), being the main components identified the new natural C9-polyacetylenes 1-nonene-3,5-diyne (1, here named as<br />baccharisdiyne) (52.7–65.0 %), 1,7(Z)-nonadiene-3,5-diyne [2, 7(Z)-dehydro-baccharisdiyne] (14.4–17.8 %), and 1,7(E)-nonadiene-3,5-diyne [3, 7(E)-dehydro-baccharisdiyne] (1.5–2.4 %). In addition, the known polyacetylenic compounds (Z)-lachnophyllum acid methyl ester (4) (4.3–5.3 %) and (E)-lachnophyllum acid methyl ester (5) (0.2 %) were also identified. Moreover, GC/qMS analysis allowed the identification of other 46 components in the essential oil samples, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenoids. In B. palustris, C9-polyacetylenes<br />probably derive biogenetically from a C10 precursor: baccharisdiyne (1) would be derived from either or both<br />lachnophyllum methyl ester geometric isomers (4 or 5), by enzymatic hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation. Dehydro-baccharisdiynes (2 and 3) could be produced by a similar pathway starting from the corresponding matricaria acid methyl ester isomers, one of which was tentatively identified at trace-level in B. palustris essential oil.</p>

<p>Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae) is an aromatic plant species widely distributed across and along South American countries where it grows in different environments, even being considered, in some cases, as a hard to control weed. Its essential oil is highly appreciated in the fragrance/perfumery industry by its woody, foral, and green notes; mainly attributed to (E)-nerolidol and other sesquiterpene alcohols. Recent research has demonstrated a wide range of applications for the essential oil besides its aromatic properties. Although B. dracunculifolia cannot be considered as a medicinal plant for most of the indigenous communities in South America (except for Brazil), modern pharmacological research has demonstrated its high potential for the development of new therapeutic drugs, mainly with antiulcer, anti-infammatory, antiparasitic and anticancer effect. The special literature regarding B. dracunculifolia is profuse and thus, this chapter attempts to summarize the principal knowledge about this species.</p>

Differences in female/male plant metabolism for dioecious species are poorly understood but relevant if the economic exploitation of such resources is the objective. In this work, the composition of Baccharis tridentata Vahl essential oil from the flowering aerial parts of male and female plants was analysed separately by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; area percentage and internal standard), and CPGC-MS (chiral phase gas chromatography analysis using modified β-cyclodextrin), reporting the enantiomeric distribution of monoterpene hydrocarbons as a genuineness criterion. The results confirmed high qualitative similarities between the essential oils from both genders, but quantitative differences in the main components α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene and bornyl acetate. Regarding the CPGC-MS analysis of monoterpene hydrocarbons, both sexes presented both enantiomers in the same ratios, which is in contrast to the values reported in the literature for related plants. However, natural bornyl acetate (isolated from B. tridentata essential oil) demonstrated a 100% enantiomeric excess of the levogyre enantiomer, a fact that has chemotaxonomic relevance.

When developing new products to be used in honeybee colonies, further than acute toxicity, it is imperative to perform an assessment of risks, including various sublethal effects. The long-term sublethal effects of xenobiotics on honeybees, more specifically of acaricides used in honeybee hives, have been scarcely studied, particularly so in the case of essential oils and their components. In this work, chronic effects of the ingestion of Eupatorium buniifolium (Asteraceae) essential oil were studied on nurse honeybees using laboratory assays. Survival, food consumption, and the effect on the composition of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) were assessed. CHC were chosen due to their key role as pheromones involved in honeybee social recognition. While food consumption and survival were not affected by the consumption of the essential oil, CHC amounts and profiles showed dose-dependent changes. All groups of CHC (linear and branched alkanes, alkenes and alkadienes) were altered when honeybees were fed with the highest essential oil dose tested (6000 ppm). The compounds that significantly varied include n-docosane, n-tricosane, n-tetracosane, ntriacontane, n-tritriacontane, 9-tricosene, 7-pentacosene, 9-pentacosene, 9-heptacosene, tritriacontene, pentacosadiene, hentriacontadiene, tritriacontadiene and all methyl alkanes. All of them but pentacosadiene were up-regulated. On the other hand, CHC profiles were similar in healthy and Nosema-infected honeybees when diets included the essential oil at 300 and 3000 ppm. Our results show that the ingestion of an essential oil can impact CHC and that the effect is dose-dependent. Changes in CHC could affect the signaling process mediated by these pheromonal compounds. To our knowledge this is the first report of changes in honeybee cuticular hydrocarbons as a result of essential oil ingestion

Abstract Qualitative and quantitative determination of volatile markers in aqueous based fragrances assumes ever-increasing importance, because of both the need for quality control and the safety-regulatory limitations introduced for several compounds. This study reports and critically discusses the results of applying new water-compatible ionic-liquid (IL) GC stationary phases, based on phosphonium and imidazolium derivative cations combined with trifluoromethanesulphonate (Watercol™) to the direct quantitative analysis of aqueous samples in the perfume field with GC–MS. Narrow-bore columns of different lengths, especially prepared for this study, were adopted to minimize the amount of water reaching the MS detector after GC separation. All GC–MS analysis steps were investigated, to achieve results compatible with quality control requirements for the volatiles of interest in this field, in terms of LODs, LOQs, and repeatability. Reliability of the GC–MS results was demonstrated by determining volatile allergens in two commercial perfumes, as per EU regulations concerning no-declaration limits for leave-on (0.001%) and rinse-off (0.01%) cosmetic products.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crops are affected by a diversity of pests. Among these pests, the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and the leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) cause large yield losses. The effects from these insects are often minimized by applying synthetic pesticides, although these have many drawback. To characterize novel tools for insect control, essential oils from two Asteraceae (Artemisia absinthium and Eupatorium buniifolium) were studied for their potential toxicity to beneficial insects [honey bees (Apis mellifera L.)] and phytotoxic effects against tomato seeds and vegetative parts. Our results show that seed germination was affected at application rates needed to control the leafminer T. absoluta but not at rates needed to control the whitefly T. vaporariorum. The same trend was found for honeybee toxicity: the use of these essential oils at the amounts needed to control T. vaporariorum would be not acutely toxic for bees. Finally, an experimental greenhouse trial showed that the application of the essential oil from E. buniifolium at 3% on whitefly-infested plants can cause whitefly adult mortality without affecting the crop yield.

The essential oil of aerial parts of Salvia guaranitica, grown in a small-scale experimental field in Uruguay, was analysed by GC, GC–MS and 13C-NMR; 49 constituents (86.6% of the total sample) were identified. The major components were found to be sesquiterpene hydrocarbons: germacrene D (25.0%), β-elemene (20.0%), β-caryophyllene (8.8%) and β-bourbonene (6.2%), whereas monoterpenes only reached 4% of the sample analysed. El desarrollo de la industria cítrica uruguaya implica sin embargo la solución de numerosos problemas que requieren la colaboración entre investigadores técnicos y empresarios industriales asi como aprovechar la experiencia de otros paises como Italia |b que poseen una importante tradición en el sector citricola. En esta nota premilinar se traza un panorama de la situación de la citricultura y de la industria de derivados cítricos en el Uruguay.
