<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The high incidence and mortality associated with cancer evidence the need for novel therapeutic agents. Metalbased coordination compounds offer a diverse arsenal of molecules that can be developed into drugs, beyond those currently in clinical use. Among them, copper complexes are emerging as promising candidates for cancer treatment. In this study, a series of complexes [Cu(L-dipeptide)(met-phen)] (where met-phen: 4-methyl-1,10- phenanthroline and 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized and characterized. Solid-state characterization included the determination of the crystal structures of [Cu(Gly-Gly)(4met-phen)]⋅5.5 H2O and [Cu(pheala)( 4met-phen)]⋅3H2O. DNA binding was assessed through the intrinsic binding constant (Kb) and relative viscosity measurements, indicating partial intercalation into calf-thymus DNA. The obtained Kb values were approximately tenfold lower than those reported for analogous complexes with phenanthroline. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was evaluated against a panel of human cancer cell lines: metastatic breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 (triple negative, ATCC: HTB-26), lung epithelial carcinoma A549 (ATCC: CCL-185), ovarian carcinoma A2780 (ECACC 93112519), and nontumoral lung cell line MRC-5 (ATCC: CCL-171). The complexes exhibited potent cytotoxicity, with IC₅₀ values in the low micromolar range, which was significantly more effective than that of cisplatin. [Cu(ala-gly)(5met-phen)] inhibits clonogenic colony formation and induces cellular death above its IC₅₀. These findings evidence that [Cu(L-dipeptide)(met-phen)] complexes are interesting candidates for further in vivo investigation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In order to seek for new compounds with antitumor activity, our research group is focused on copper complexes with mixed ligands. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of eight compounds with general formula [Cu(iminodiacetate)(diimine)(H2O)x], with x = 0 or 1, and their cytotoxic activities against tumor cells. The chosen diimine ligands were: 2,2́-dipyridil-amine (bam), 2,2́-bipyridine (bipy), 4,4́-dimethyl-2,2́-bipyridine (dmb), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4met-phen), 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (5nitro-phen), neocuproine (neo) and bathophenanthroline (batho). Compounds were characterized in solid state using FT-IR, TGA, DSC and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses by which five new crystal structures were determined. Common features of the coordination scheme include fac-NO + O isomerism of the iminodiacetate (ida) ligand, except for the complex with neo where the ida presents mer-NO2 isomerism. The diimine ligand completes the equatorial plane for the facial isomers, with different degrees of distortion in the octahedral or square-based pyramid geometry depending on the diimine ligand, whereas the neo is perpendicular to the equatorial plane in the latter. Studies in solution, using EPR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and conductimetry, showed that the copper coordination observed in solid state is retained except for the batho complex. DNA interaction studies evidenced that the complexes bind to this biomolecule, inducing different conformational changes. Biological experiments evidenced that all complexes induce cell death in the cell line MDA-MD-231 (metastasic breast cancer line). [Cu(ida)(neo)] and [Cu(ida)(batho)] presented the highest activity. Taken all these data together we propose that [Cu(ida)(neo)] and [Cu(ida)(batho)] are good candidates for further studies in vitro and in vivo.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Copper coordination complexes are increasingly recognized as potential drugs for therapeutic use in various diseases, especially in cancer. In an attempt to find new leaders for the development of antitumor Cu compounds, heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and dimethylbipyridine (dmbpy), phenanthroline (phen) or neocuproine (neo) were prepared and characterized. The compounds [CuCl(dmbpy)(PPh3)] (1), [CuCl(phen)(PPh3)]⋅0,25H2O (2) and [CuCl(neo)(PPh3)] (3) were obtained. The crystal structures of compounds 2 and 3 were determined. In both complexes, the Cu(I) centre presents distorted tetrahedral coordination. All complexes present cytotoxic activity, against tumor cell lines, being more active than Cisplatin, with IC50 in the low micromolar range. This activity augments in the order 1 < 2 < 3, following the same order as the lipophilicity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Palladium(II) complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (H2Bz4DH) and its N(4)-methyl (H2Bz4M) and N(4)-phenyl (H2Bz4Ph) derivatives were obtained and fully characterized. [Pd(2Bz4DH)Cl] (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 11.671(1), b = 10.405(1), c = 13.124(1), b = 115.60(1) and Z = 4; [Pd(2Bz4M)Cl] (2) in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 9.695(1), b = 15.044(1), c = 10.718(1) A ˚ , b = 105.38(1) and Z = 4 and [Pd(2Bz4Ph)Cl] (3) in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 9.389(1), b = 13.629(1), c = 15.218(1) A ˚ , a = 70.25(1), b = 73.46(1), c = 83.57(1) and two independent molecules per asymmetric unit (Z = 4). All complexes show a quite similar planar fourfold environment around palladium(II). A negatively charged organic molecule acts as a tridentate ligand and binds to the metal through the pyridine nitrogen, the imine nitrogen and the sulfur atom. A chloride ion occupies the fourth coordination site. The planar complexes stack nearly parallel to one another in the lattice conforming a layered crystal structure. The cytotoxic activity of the thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes was tested against the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 human tumor cell lines. The ligands exhibit lower values of GI50 and LC50 than the complexes, H2Bz4Ph being the most active with GI50 < 0.003 lM; LC50 = 13.4 lM; GI50 = 9.3 lM, LC50 = 12.9 lM; GI50 < 0.003, LC50 = 13.8 lM in the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 cell lines, respectively. Among the complexes, [Pd(2Bz4Ph)Cl] (3) exhibited the lowest values of GI50 in the three studied cell lines.]]></dcterms:abstract>
