Fluoride in drinking water has beneficial or harmful health effects depending on its concentration. This highlights the need for new low-cost and portable sensors capable of in situ monitoring of F− ions. Unfortunately, achieving high levels of water compatibility and fluoride specificity remains a challenge. Here, four new urea-based discrete sensors are prepared and characterized. The sensors containing anthracenyl- (5) and 9H-fluorenyl- (7) signaling units exhibit intense luminescent emissions in dimethyl sulfoxide, the former being particularly sensitive and selective to fluoride. In water, 5 displays a superior sensitivity (871 M−1) and a detection limit (8 μm) below international guidelines, albeit with cross-sensitivity to H2PO4‾. To enhance the performance, 5 and 7 are embedded into a fluoride-imprinted polymeric matrix to give solid-state sensors (5P and 7P, respectively). 5P shows good sensitivity (360 M−1) and specificity in water. Besides, it has a low detection limit (35 μm) and a response linear range (118–6300 μm) encompassing the limit established by the Environmental Protection Agency (211 μm). Furthermore, 5P also displays good reusability and adequate recovery values in real-sample testing (102 ± 2%), constituting the first example of a low-cost anion-imprinted polymeric probe tailored for the selective sensing of fluoride in aqueous samples.

A pilot annual monitoring survey (April 2018–March 2019) was conducted to investigate the presence of pesticides in superficial water and fish in Laguna del Cisne, one of the most critical drinking water sources in Uruguay. A total of 25 pesticide residues were detected in superficial water (89.3 % of the samples). Pesticide's temporal distribution was as sociated with crops and livestock practices, with higher occurrences in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. The most frequent compounds in superficial water were the insecticide chlorantraniliprole, and the herbicides glyph osate (including its metabolite AMPA) and metolachlor. The levels of Organochlorine pesticide, p,p′-DDT, was in some cases two order of magnitude above the international water quality guidelines for Ambient Water Criteria. In fishes, eight different pesticides were detected, at concentrations from 1000 to 453,000 ng·kg−1 . The most frequent pesticides found were propiconazole, chlorpyrifos, and p,p′-DDE. The widespread occurrence of pesticides in fish suggests poten tial exposure effects on fish populations and the aquatic ecosystem. The sampling approach of this work allowed mon itoring the continuous concentrations of several pesticides in surface waters and fishes to establish the influence from past and current agriculture practices in Laguna del Cisne basin. For safety measures, continuous monitoring programs must be performed in this system to prevent toxicity impacts on aquatic organisms and human health.

The continuous introduction of new technologies and new instruments in the analytical field drives the laboratories to try to purchase fancy instruments that most of the cases are oversized for the needs of the laboratory. Identifying and quantifying organochlorine compounds is a normal task nowadays but it is always challenging when the matrix involved has environmental factors or complex biological matrix. Herein we describe step-by-step the protocols used in our lab for sample preparation and accurate quantification of organochlorine compounds in drinking water, surface water, underground water, and biological samples using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Evidence for low-dose health effects of Arsenic (As) in humans is still controversial and presents a major public health issue in several countries worldwide. It is not clear yet, whether there is a lower safe threshold for arsenic in drinking water among other possible sources such as food, below which, exposures are not harmful. In Uruguay, safe drinking water is supplied to 94% of the population by a state company (OSE) and As levels in workplaces and food are officially regulated. This paper aims to present and discuss the issues regarding arsenic exposure risks to the environment and human population, which are being addressed in a multidisciplinary manner in Uruguay since 2007. An overview is given on both the background and the current situation, presenting reports and research studies conducted on these problems by various academic, state, and private institutions that deal with regulations, surveillance, and health care. Scientific research on geogenic As levels in groundwater indicates As levels above those recommended by the WHO for drinking water (10 μg L-1) in different Uruguayan aquifers. There is a lack of baseline studies concerning Uruguayan residents that are exposed to As in drinking water over time. Furthermore, there is a need for data on environmental chemical exposure that could be associated with disease or death in the country. In addition, only a few As risk exposure assessment studies in children, adults, and workers using biomarkers in urine are available. Furthermore, this paper presents As levels in a rice growing region and the spatial distribution of groundwater arsenic data compared to a national cancer atlas database as ongoing research advances. Multidisciplinary research projects and local future actions are also described. This contribution constitutes a first attempt to develop a feasible health risk assessment of low-dose arsenic exposure in this Latin-American country

A summary of the resource.
A novel automated method for the determination of boron based on the use of pulsed flows was developed and applied to the determination of this element in samples of tap water, ocean water and eye drops.
The method was implemented by means of a multi-pumping system consisting of three solenoid micropumps and a photometric detector and exploits the reaction of azomethine-H in the presence of boron. The system runs under control of an open-source microcontroller. The main operational parameters were optimized. Given the particular kinetics of the reaction, a stopped-flow period (1 or 5 min) was included to allow for color development.
The method presents linearity in the range 0.35–3.0 mg L−1, good precision (sr<3%), and detection and quantification limits of 0.10 and 0.35 mg L−1 respectively. Samples of tap water or eye drops could be successfully analyzed employing a 1-minute stop time, providing a maximum sampling frequency of 32 samples h-1. In order to overcome matrix effect caused by the high saline concentration, ocean water samples required stop times of 5 min, providing a sampling frequency of 10 samples h-1.
Recoveries of 102% (eye drops), 94% (drinking water) and 93% (ocean water) were obtained. The method was considered accurate and fit for the purpose.

In freshwater, harmful cyanobacterial blooms threaten to increase with global climate change and eutrophication of surface waters. In addition to the burden and necessity of removal of algal material during water treatment processes, bloom-forming cyanobacteria can produce a class of remarkably stable toxins, microcystins, difficult to remove from drinking water sources. A number of animal intoxications over the past 20 years have served as sentinels for widespread risk presented by microcystins. Cyanobacterial blooms have the potential to threaten severely both public health and the regional economy of affected communities, particularly those with limited infrastructure or resources. Our main objectives were to assess whether existing water treatment infrastructure provides sufficient protection against microcystin exposure, identify available options feasible to implement in resource-limited communities in bloom scenarios and to identify strategies for improved solutions. Finally, interventions at the watershed level aimed at bloom prevention and risk reduction for entry into potable water sources were outlined. We evaluated primary studies, reviews and reports for treatment options for microcystins in surface waters, potable water sources and treatment plants. Because of the difficulty of removal of microcystins, prevention is ideal; once in the public water supply, the coarse removal of cyanobacterial cells combined with secondary carbon filtration of dissolved toxins currently provides the greatest potential for protection of public health. Options for point of use filtration must be optimized to provide affordable and adequate protection for affected communities. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

La Química Analítica es transversal a todos los demás campos de la química, pues, en definitiva, no hay disciplina química que no haga uso de los análisis químicos. Este capítulo se enfoca en la obtención de información sobre la composición de un producto que algunos tienen la fortuna de obtener con un simple movimiento de mano, pero que para gran parte de la humanidad es escasa y de difícil acceso: el agua potable. Se busca responder a preguntas como: ¿Cuáles son los requisitos establecidos para clasificarla como potable? y ¿cómo es posible asegurar que no contiene sustancias perjudiciales para la salud humana? Los fenómenos químicos y físicos a los que se recurre para determinar la calidad del agua potable son diversos. Es posible utilizar desde un simple “kit para ensayos in situ” para determinar componentes macro, hasta equipos de última tecnología para la determinación de componentes traza y ultratraza. En este trabajo se ejemplifican metodologías para determinar parámetros inorgánicos y orgánicos en agua potable, así como los fundamentos de las principales técnicas analíticas que se emplean para este fin. Para garantizar la calidad del agua que bebemos no se puede pasar por alto el análisis microbiológico y la seguridad desde el punto de vista radioquímico de este vital producto, aspectos que también serán abordados. Todos los parámetros que se determinan en el agua de abastecimiento público deben cumplir con los requisitos de las normas que garantizan que dicha agua es apta para el consumo humano sin producir riesgos para la salud.
