    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The transformation of the first-food systems and the widespread availability and marketing of breastmilk substitutes undermine efforts to promote adequate breastfeeding practices. The objective of the present research was to explore mothers’ perspectives on infant formula use in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. A generic qualitative design was used to explore mothers’ perspectives on the factors that act as enablers or barriers for infant formula use. Semi-structured interviews with thirty-four mothers of 0–23 months old children, aged between 25- and 40-years old, were conducted. The interview transcripts were analyzed using content analysis based on inductive-deductive coding considering the framework of the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, and Behavior (COM-B) model. The discourse of the interviewees enabled the identification of a wide range of barriers and enablers for the use of infant formula, which were related to the three components of the model: capabilities, opportunity, and motivation. The health system emerged as the key determinant of infant formula use. Most of the participants who used infant formula referred to medical indication when explaining the reasons underlying their infant feeding decisions. The working status of the mother and emotional aspects of the child feeding experience were also identified as key enablers of infant formula use, whereas knowledge about health benefits and breastfeeding techniques, support from families and health-professionals, and motivation to breastfeed were key barriers. Taken together, these results suggest that strategies to reduce the use of infant formula in Uruguay should mainly focus on providing opportunities to breastfeed by improving the quality of the support and guidance provided to families in the health system and facilitating greater balance between breastfeeding and work.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Wet-mixing processes can be tuned to reduce energy consumption, although impacts on quality and stability should be addressed. This work evaluated the effect of wet-mix processing (total solids, TS: 50 or 60%; heat treatment: 75 or 100 C 18 s) and storage conditions (open package: 25 C, 58% RH, 4 weeks; closed package: 25 C, multilayer bag, 12 weeks) on the physicochemical stability and digestibility of infant formulas. Processing significantly influenced the physicochemical characteristics of the powders, with TS exerting a stronger impact than heat treatment. Powders produced from 60% TS wet mixes presented the fastest water sorption, which accelerated lactose crystallisation and fat liberation. Formulas in closed packages were stable for 12 weeks. While lactose crystallised before week 2 in openpackage storage, inducing major physical changes, only limited effects were observed on digestibility. These findings provide valuable insights to ensure consistent quality during shelf-life of infant formula.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The study aimed to assess the application of the Approach avoidance task (AAT) with children to measure implicit motivational tendencies towards foods differing in sweetness and calorie content and to explore the relationship between approach bias and explicit measurements of expected liking, attitudes, and hunger state and their relation to paired-preference tasks. The simplicity and game-like procedure of the AAT, where participants use a joystick to pull or push pictures, seems particularly suitable to measure implicit motivational biases in children. However, to our knowledge, this approach has not been used with children in a food related context.<br />Children aged 9&ndash;11 participated in the study (n = 114). Their implicit bias towards pictures of snacks was measured via AAT. The test instruction was based on pushing or pulling the joystick according to picture category, food vs. non-food: food (18 snack pictures varying in sweetness and calorie) vs. non-food (18 pictures visually similar to the respective food stimuli). Further, children rated their expected liking of the snack pictures, answered an attitude questionnaire related to health and sugar consumption, and completed two paired preference tests tasting real samples under blind condition and choosing between a sugar and no-sugar added chocolate milk take-home pack.<br />The percentage of non-valid AAT responses was relatively high, leading to low testing power. There was a significant difference in approach bias between food pictures and non-food pictures; approach bias was positive for food and slightly negative for non-food. Within food pictures, no significant effect of sweetness nor calorie was found. Nevertheless, children&rsquo;s approach biases were linked to their expected liking ratings, which revealed a clear preference towards high sweetness and high calorie snacks. Individual differences in children&rsquo;s approach bias to pictures differing in sweetness and calorie content were related to their hunger state but not to their attitudes or preference towards chocolate milk, indicating relevance for situational food choices. In the present study, questionnaire-based measurements (affective and cognitive attitude towards sugar, sugar craving and using food as reward) were however associated with children&rsquo;s preference towards chocolate milk (blind and/or informed). Higher scores in the measured attitude subscales craving for sweet food, using food as reward, affective attitude towards sweet food and cognitive attitude towards sweet food were associated with higher odds to choose the sugar added chocolate milk. Methodological considerations and recommendations with regards to the use of approachavoidance testing with children are critically discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A multicommutated flow system was designed and evaluated for the determination of selenium by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). It was applied to the determination of total selenium in samples of cow&rsquo;s milk (fluid and powder) and infant formulae. Linearity was satisfactory in the range up to 27.5 mg L1 (h &frac14; 0.082 C + 0.0033, h &frac14; peak-height, absorbance, C &frac14; concentration in mg L1, r2 &frac14; 0.999). Detection (3s) and quantification (10s) limits in solution were LD &frac14; 0.08 mg L1 and LQ &frac14; 0.27 mg L1, corresponding to LD &frac14; 3.2 mg kg1 and LQ &frac14; 10.8 mg kg1 in solid samples, and to LD &frac14; 0.8 mg L1, LQ &frac14; 2.7 mg L1 in fluid milk samples. Trueness was verified by analysis (n &frac14; 5) of two reference materials (NIST 1549, Non-fat Milk Powder and NIST 1846 Infant Formula). At the 95% significance level, results were statistically equivalent to the certified values. Instrumental precision (sr(%), n &frac14; 5) was in the range 1.4% to 11.7%, analytical precision (sr(%), n &frac14; 5) being 4.2 and 9.3% respectively for the determination of the above mentioned reference materials.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>A fast and efficient automated method using a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system, based on the Griess, reaction was<br />developed for the determination of nitrate and nitrite in infant formulas and milk powder. The system enables to mix a measured<br />amount of sample (previously constituted in the liquid form and deproteinized) with the chromogenic reagent to produce a<br />colored substance whose absorbance was recorded. For nitrate determination, an on-line prereduction step was added by passing<br />the sample through a Cd minicolumn. The system was controlled from a PC by means of a user-friendly program. Figures of merit<br />include linearity (r2 &gt; 0.999 for both analytes), limits of detection (0.32mg kg&minus;1 NO3-N, and 0.05 mg kg&minus;1 NO2-N), and precision<br />(sr%) 0.8&ndash;3.0. Results were statistically in good agreement with those obtained with the reference ISO-IDF method. The sampling<br />frequency was 30 hour&minus;1 (nitrate) and 80 hour&minus;1 (nitrite) when performed separately.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>
