This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of Aloysia polystachia, Acantholippia seriphioides, Schinus molle, Solidago chilensis, Lippia turbinata, Minthostachys mollis, Buddleja globosa, and Baccharis latifolia essential oils (EOs), and to evaluate their antibacterial activities and their capacity to provoke membrane disruption in Paenibacillus larvae, the bacteria that causes the American Foulbrood (AFB) disease on honey bee larvae. The relationship between the composition of the EOs and these activities on P. larvae was also analyzed. Monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds in all EOs. All EOs showed antimicrobial activity against P. larvae and disrupted the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane of P. larvae provoking the leakage of cytoplasmic constituents (with the exception of B. latifolia EO). While, the EOs’ antimicrobial activity was correlated most strongly to the content of pulegone, carvone, (Z)-β-ocimene, δ-cadinene, camphene, terpinen-4-ol, elemol, β-pinene, β-elemene, γ-cadinene, α-terpineol, and bornyl acetate; the volatiles that better explained the membrane disruption were carvone, limonene, cis-carvone oxide, pentadecane, trans-carvyl acetate, trans-carvone oxide, trans-limonene oxide, artemisia ketone, trans-carveol, thymol, and γ-terpinene (positively correlated) and biciclogermacrene, δ-2-carene, verbenol, α-pinene, and α-thujene (negatively correlated). The studied EOs are proposed as natural alternative means of control for the AFB disease.

Diverse parasites and pathogens affect productivity and survival of honey bees. Plant secondary metabolites are potential alternative treatments, however, their effect has been little studied on microsporidian diseases. Furthermore, there is poor information about the toxicity resulting from prolonged oral administration of these substances to bees. In this research, we evaluated in vivo effects of different essential oils and main components (MCs) on bee survival and Nosema ceranae development under an ad libitum non-choice regimen. Substances administered on sucrose syrup to newly emerged bees at different concentrations were avidly consumed and caused different survival performances. Nevertheless, sublethal doses of substances did not control the parasite. Diversos parásitos y patógenos afectan la productividad y la supervivencia de las abejas melíferas. Los metabolitos secundarios de las plantas son tratamientos alternativos potenciales, sin embargo, su efecto ha sido poco estudiado sobre las enfermedades microsporidianas. Además, hay poca información sobre la toxicidad resultante de la administración oral prolongada de estas sustancias a las abejas. En esta investigación, evaluamos los efectos in vivo de diferentes aceites esenciales y componentes principales (CPs) sobre la supervivencia de abejas y el desarrollo de Nosema ceranae bajo un régimen de ad libitum sin elección. Las sustancias administradas en el jarabe de sacarosa a las abejas recién emergidas a diferentes concentraciones se consumieron con avidez y causaron diferentes resultados de supervivencia. No obstante, las dosis subletales de sustancias no controlaron el parásito.

El conocimiento de las floraciones es útil para predecir el comportamiento de las colonias de Apis mellifera (abeja de la miel). El objetivo fue determinar las características florísticas desde el punto de vista apícola de un bosque serrano en Uruguay. Realizamos ocho visitas en tres sitios aledaños a la colmena: a 10-20 m, 500 m y 1500 m de distancia. En la primera visita determinamos especies, familias, origen (nativo o exótico) y frecuencia de cada taxón. En visitas posteriores, censamos cuáles estaban florecidas (presencia o ausencia). Asignamos a cada especie un valor de uno a cinco para la abundancia (A) y la duración de la floración (P), durante dos años. Utilizamos el índice de Shannon para medir la diversidad florística. Se utilizó un modelo lineal generali-zado para analizar la floración a través de las variables respuesta: presencia de floración en invierno, primavera, verano y otoño, así como duración de la floración. Calculamos un índice de Shannon de 3,6, lo que indica una alta biodiversidad. Luego correlacionamos los hallazgos de la prospección con datos de la literatura sobre la ocurrencia de cada especie en estudios melisopalinológicos en mieles maduras e inmaduras. Por último, defi-nimos el término flora convertible para identificar los recursos florales cuyo polen se almacena cuando no hay ninguna flora disponible. Estas fueron Lithraea brasiliensis, Baccharis articulata, Baccharis trimera, Blepharo-calyx salicifolius, Eugenia uniflora, Colletia Paradoxa, Oxalis sp., Scutia buxifolia, Jodina rhombifolia, Aloysia gratissima, para las temporadas de primavera y otoño (P<0.05). El término flora de soporte (P<0.05) lo defini-mos para clasificar aquellos recursos que se encuentran en la miel inmadura y están casi ausentes en la miel madura, y se utilizan como nutrientes durante la expansión de la colonia: Schinus engleri, Maytenus ilicifolia, Eryngium pandanifolium, Baccharis punctulata, Abutilon pauciflorum, Daphnopsis racemosa, Allophylus edulis y Celtis tala. Esta clasificación de la flora permite planificar los desarrollos y rendimientos de la miel esperados de una región, y establecer paquetes tecnológicos útiles y eficientes de cosechas de miel.

Almond is a high-market value crop that benefits from honeybee pollination services, even for self compatible varieties. Besides, it has been recently shown that the offering of food scented with floral mimic odors specific to different crops biased honeybee foraging preferences towards sunflowers, pear, or apple trees. Herein, we analyzed the floral volatiles of two almond self-compatible varieties to propose potential mimic odors. The mixture which bees discriminated the least from the natural floral scent in olfactory conditioning assays was chosen as almond mimic (AM). In the field, colonies fed AM-scented sucrose solution increased their foraging activity and amounts of stored pollen compared with colonies fed unscented food. Our results support the conditioning of honeybees to a floral mimic odor as a potential tool to bias their foraging prefer ences in almond, even applicable to self-compatible varieties. Future studies should address its effect on yield.
