<dcterms:abstract>The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of food education seminars on the introduction of bread with OPN flour added to public school meals in Brazil. A product-specific emoji list, facial hedonic scale, and word association (WA) were used. To evaluate the effects of the food education intervention, seminars were applied at only one of the schools. One school was selected as an intervention group (IG) (n = 398) and the other one as a control group (CG) (n = 441). The food education seminar revealed itself to be an essential strategy for willingness to try and acceptance of the bread. The product-specific emoji scale helped to understand children's emotions regarding the new food. The WA task brought a holistic insight into the evaluation of bread by children, confirming the hedonic data. The introduction of new food in school meals is positively influenced by food literacy, and all sensory evaluations corroborate this.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Research into perceived wellbeing (WB) can improve understanding of consumer food choices and support development of strategies to promote healthier and more sustainable eating habits. In this research, using online studies, food-related WB was explored among New Zealand consumers. In a “quasi-replication” of Jaeger, Vidal, Chheang, and Ares (2022), Study 1 uncovered word associations to different WB-related terms (‘Sense of wellbeing,’ ‘Lack of wellbeing,’ ‘Feeling good,’ ‘Feeling bad/unhappy,’ ‘Satisfied with life,’ and ‘Dissatisfied with life’) with 912 participants in a between-subjects design. The results confirmed the multidimensional nature of WB, and the need to consider positive and negative aspects of food-related WB, as well as differences linked to physical, emotional, and spiritual WB. Drawing on Study 1, 13 characteristics of food-related WB were identified, and in Study 2 their importance for feeling a ‘Sense of wellbeing’ and ‘Satisfied with life’ was determined with 1206 participants using a between-subjects design. In a further extension, Study 2 also adopted a product-specific perspective and explored the associations of, and importance, for 16 different foods and beverages to foodrelated WB. Based on Best-Worst Scaling and penalty/lift analysis, the four most important characteristics overall were ‘Is good quality,’ ‘Is healthy,’ ‘Is fresh,’ and ‘Is tasty,’ with the nuance that healthiness contributed most to feeling a ‘Sense of wellbeing’ while good quality contributed most to feeling ‘Satisfied with life.’ The associations to individual foods and beverages underscored that food-related WB is a complex construct arising from an overall evaluation of the different effects of foods (including physical health, social and spiritual aspects of food consumption) and their short-term effects on food-related behaviour. Contextual and individual differences in perceptions of WB in relation to food deserve further investigation.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Perceived (or subjective) wellbeing is regarded as key to understanding consumer food choices and the devel opment of strategies to promote desirable eating habits. Yet, in-depth understanding of the specific factors that contribute to people’s perceived wellbeing across cultures is lacking. These factors motivated the present research that used word associations to conduct an exploratory analysis of consumer conceptualisations of food related wellbeing (WB). Adults (n = 4945) living in the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore or Germany, and speaking respectively, English or German, took part in the study. Health, pleasure, food quality, positive emo tions and social aspects of food consumption were the main associations with food-related wellbeing. Absence hereof was associated with unhealthiness, disgust, negative emotions and poor mental health. The differences in these main associations emphasised the importance of exploring wellbeing, as well as lack hereof. Not doing so leads to an incomplete understanding of this multidimensional construct. The research was conducted with four terms related to wellbeing (each in their positive and negative versions): ‘sense of wellbeing’ and ‘lack of wellbeing’, ‘feeling good’ and ‘feeling bad/unhappy’, ‘satisfied with life’ and ‘dissatisfied with life’ and ‘fulfilled in life’ and ‘unfulfilled in life’. Because these different terms gave rise to different wellbeing associations, re searchers in this area must choose their empirical approach with care. The terms ‘sense of wellbeing’ and ‘feeling good’ tended to more frequently give rise to health-related associations. Conversely, ‘satisfied with life’ and ‘fulfilled in life’ tended to more frequently give rise to positive spiritual and emotional associations of food related wellbeing. The main conceptualisations of food-related wellbeing were cross-culturally similar, but extension of the present research to other Asian countries was recommended based on several differences be tween Singaporean participants and those from other countries. In ethnically diverse countries like Singapore, further within-country investigations of different cultures will also have merit.

    <dcterms:abstract>An in-depth understanding of people’s experiences, beliefs and thoughts about cooking and homemade meals is essential for the design of a more effective discourse to encourage cooking from scratch. In this context, the objective of the present work was to explore the social representations of homemade meals and cooking. An online survey was conducted with 974 Uruguayan adults, recruited using an advertisement on Facebook. Participants were asked to write down the first words that came to their mind when thinking of homemade meals and cooking. Responses were coded into categories using inductive coding. The structure of the social representations was explored using the frequency of mention and rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed
that the social representations of homemade meals were largely consensual among participants and mainly related to pleasure, health, and wellbeing. However, the social representations of cooking did not have a clear structure, which raised diverse associations related to homemade foods, positive emotions but also to lack of convenience in terms of time and effort. Results suggest public campaigns aimed at encouraging people to cook from scratch should position cooking as enjoyable task and diminish perception of lack of time and effort association.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Increasing consumption of ultra-processed products from early age has raised growing concerns. In this context, the aims of the present work were: i) to explore the automatic mental associations raised by packages of ultra-processed products among parents of children under 12 months of age, ii) to estimate the valence of the affective reactions elicited by ultra-processed products, and iii) to explore the influence of socio-demographic variables and feeding styles on the valence of parents’ associations with ultra-processed products. A total of 419 parents of children under 12 months of age were recruited at 20 health facilities that offer well-child services, selected using probability proportional to size sampling based on the number of births at each institution. Participants were presented with the labels of six ultra-processed products (corn snack, frankfurters, milk dessert, orange juice, wafer cookies, yogurt) and were asked to indicate the first words that came to their mind. The products raised mixed mental associations, which were mainly related to pleasure and health. Responses from the majority of participants (61–82%) evidenced negative associations with corn snacks, frankfurters and wafer cookies, whereas responses from 35 to 45% of the participants suggested a positive affective reaction towards orange juice, milk dessert and yogurt. Likelihood of having a positive affective reaction towards the evaluated ultra-processed products was higher for parents of 1 to 4 months infants, as well as those from low educational level and low socio-economic status. In addition, beliefs about three feeding practices (restriction on diet quality, indulgence in screen use and pressure for finishing) significantly influenced the valence of the associations. Results from the present work suggest the need to implement regulatory measures to reduce positive associations with ultra-processed products among parents and contribute to reduce their consumption among infants.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The social representations of complementary feeding are expected to shape parents’ decisions and to provide justification or legitimization for their practices. The aims of the present work were: i) to explore the social representations of complementary feeding in parents and health professionals, ii) to evaluate if the onset of complementary feeding modify social representations in parents, and iii) to compare the representations of parents and pediatricians. Three groups of participants were considered: 170 parents of children who had not started complementary feeding (1–4 months old), 170 parents of children who had started complementary feeding (7–10 months old) and 212 pediatricians. Parents were recruited in health facilities in Montevideo (Uruguay), whereas pediatricians were recruited at the National Pediatrics Conference. Participants were asked to complete a word association task with “the first meals of a baby”. All the responses provided by participants were grouped into categories using content analysis. The structure of the social representations was assessed considering the frequency of mention and the average rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed that the social representations of complementary feeding for both parents and pediatricians were extremely narrow and mainly focused on specific foods: puree and a small set of vegetables and fruits. None of the categories showed high frequency of mention and low rank of appearance, indicating that the structure of the social representations did not include any element in the first periphery. According to the theory of social representations, results from the present work suggest that the social representations of complementary feeding for Uruguayan parents and pediatricians are deeply rooted and resistant to change.

Satisfaction with food-related life (SWFRL) is one component of satisfaction with life. Although researchers have identified associations between satisfaction with food-related life and specific food behaviours, it is still not clear how consumers conceptualize this complex construct. The aims of the present study were to explore consumers’
conceptualization of SWFRL, to compare how parents and adolescents in dual-headed households perceive SWFRL, and to identify aspects that would increase their SWFRL. One-hundred and sixty-four dual families
composed of mother, father, and at least one adolescent child between 10 and 17 years of age participated in the study. They completed a word association task with “Being satisfied with my food-related life” and completed
the sentence “I would be more satisfied with my food-related life if…”. Participants’ responses were aligned with the formal definition of SWFRL. References to specific foods and food characteristics were also mentioned in the
word association task. No significant differences were found between parents and adolescents in the frequency of mention of responses related to the identified categories and supra-categories, suggesting lack of differences in their conceptualization of SWFRL. Changes in eating behaviours and individuals’ resources for purchasing and preparing foods were regarded as the main factors that could increase SWFRL. Differences between family
members were found in some of the aspects associated with an increase in SWFRL. Results from this study can aid in the development of strategies for promoting changes in eating habits and increasing SWFRL, targeted at different family members.

    <dcterms:abstract>The aim of the present research was to explore consumers' conceptualization of feeling good in relation to food and beverages from a cross-cultural perspective. Participants from 14 countries across 5 continents and covering 10 languages (N = 8325) responded to an online survey including word association and free listing tasks related to feeling good in the context of food and beverages. Results were analyzed using inductive coding: a list of main codes was generated in English for each of the tasks, after which native speakers for each language coded the responses. Codes were grouped into categories reflecting common themes from which eight dimensions were identified. Results showed that in the context of foods and beverages, feeling good was mainly associated with specific foods and sensory and hedonic properties. Across the 14 countries, ‘Sweet and fat food’, ‘Fruit and vegetables’, and ‘Protein food’ were the three food categories most associated with feeling good. Emotional aspects of food consumption (‘Taste good’ and emotions) were also relevant. Health and nutrition-related aspects were more relevant for consumers when they were asked to think about how foods and beverages would make them feel good in the future. In other words, food-related feeling good seems to be mainly driven by sensory pleasure at present, but it is also related to nutrition and health in the future. Differences in the strength of the associations between feeling good and the identified categories were found between countries, in line with the existence of cultural differences in food habits, as well as in the importance people attach to the characteristics of foods and beverages. Results from the present work provide insights on the impact of eating and drinking on feeling good in terms of emotional, physical and social aspects, and increase knowledge about the way food and drink can contribute to general well-being.</dcterms:abstract>
