<dcterms:abstract>Introduction: Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae), called alecrim-do-campo, vassoura, or vassourinha, is the precursor of green propolis that is used in traditional medicine for treating conditions such as dyspepsia, fatigue, inflammation, mild fever, and high blood pressure. This study aimed to summarise botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic reports about B. dracunculifolia and contribute new information on its anatomy and essential oil composition. Methods: This study reviewed international databases, querying keywords related to traditional use, phyto chemicals, biological activities (excluding animal studies), nanotechnology, clinical trials, and toxicity. New contributions regarding micromorphology of leaves and stems were analysed by light and scanning electron microscopy, and crystals were observed by polarised microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and Raman troscopies. Essential oils and hydrolates were generated from distinct sites and analysed using gas graphy/mass spectrometry. Results: Botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic studies of B. dracunculifolia are reviewed herein along with this plant’s use in nano- and biotechnological applications. Major compounds present in the essential oils and volatile extracts of B. dracunculifolia include monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, while the organic tracts are rich in phenolics (flavonoids, caffeoylquinic, and prenylated acids) and terpenoids (diterpenoids and triterpenoids). Conclusions: Previously reported chemical and pharmacologic studies of B. dracunculifolia provided solid formation about the pharmacologic effects of this medicinal plant and the green propolis produced from it. New information reported here on the micromorphology and phytochemistry (essential oil and hydrolate tion) of B. dracunculifolia can be used to facilitate the identification of this plant in comparison to other related species and for quality control.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Differences in female/male plant metabolism for dioecious species are poorly understood but relevant if the economic exploitation of such resources is the objective. In this work, the composition of Baccharis tridentata Vahl essential oil from the flowering aerial parts of male and female plants was analysed separately by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; area percentage and internal standard), and CPGC-MS (chiral phase gas chromatography analysis using modified β-cyclodextrin), reporting the enantiomeric distribution of monoterpene hydrocarbons as a genuineness criterion. The results confirmed high qualitative similarities between the essential oils from both genders, but quantitative differences in the main components α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene and bornyl acetate. Regarding the CPGC-MS analysis of monoterpene hydrocarbons, both sexes presented both enantiomers in the same ratios, which is in contrast to the values reported in the literature for related plants. However, natural bornyl acetate (isolated from B. tridentata essential oil) demonstrated a 100% enantiomeric excess of the levogyre enantiomer, a fact that has chemotaxonomic relevance.

    <dcterms:abstract>
Chemical bioprospecting is an important tool for generating knowledge regarding local human-threatened floras and for conservation management. For Baccharis L. (Asteraceae), several volatile components have been reported for Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile as a result of bioprospection, but not for Uruguayan flora, which is composed of more than 50 native species. In this work, through collection of aerial parts of different species and volatile simultaneous-distillation extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, twelve native species of Baccharis were studied (B. articulata, B. cultrata, B. genistifolia, B. gibertii, B. gnaphalioides, B. ochracea, B. phyteumoides, B. punctulata, B. crispa, B. dracunculifolia, B. linearifolia subsp. linearifolia, and B. spicata). A detailed analysis of the male and female volatile composition was conducted for the last four species. The profiles of B. cultrata, B. genistifolia, B. gibertii, and B. gnaphalioides are reported for the first time. Because half of the species analyzed in this work are in Uruguay and are threatened or potentially threatened by human economic activities, the importance of their conservation as natural, sustainable resources is highlighted

    <dcterms:abstract>Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC. (Asteraceae), ‘carqueja', is a medicinal plant native from South America employed as decoction or infusion for the treatment of low to moderate ailments, and included in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia. This plant is also a rich source of essential oil (EO) valuable in the fragrance industry, mainly owing to carquejyl acetate, carquejol and several sesquiterpenic alcohols contributing to its characteristic aroma reminisce of rosewood. In this work, we report the EO composition, morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization of B. trimera growing wild in Uruguay. 150 compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), 79 of them not previously reported for this species, whose relative proportions varied according the season. Anatomically, the specimens analyzed did not present any leaves nor ribs between the wings. The epidermis presented polygonal cells with straight anticlinal walls, with anisocytic and less frequently anomocytic stomata. Non-glandular (multicellular, unistratified, with a characteristic elongated apex cell) and glandular (multicellular, bistratified, EO positive) trichomes were evidenced. The mesophyll at the wing level was isolateral with a central spongy parenchyma. Schyzogenous ducts with bistratified secretory epithelium (EO and polyphenols positive), were occasionally associated with the endodermis. The perimedullar parenchyma of the cladodes presented polyhedral pyramidal and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, according to previous reports.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Carquejol and its acetate are monoterpenoids based on the rare o-menthane skeleton and distinctive components of the essential oil from Baccharis trimera. Carquejol was characterized by using Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman (FT-Raman), Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Visible), Electronic Circular Dichroism (ECD), Mass, Hydrogen and Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H and 13C NMR) and 2D 1H1H gCOSY, 1H13CgHSQC, 1H13CgHMBC spectroscopies. Due to the chirality of this monoterpenoid, six different structures were analysed, of which only four showed higher populations and minimal energies. The natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIM), Merz-Kollman (MK) charges, molecular electrostatic potentials (MEP) and frontier orbitals studies were performed in order to evaluate their structural, electronic, topological and vibrational properties. All calculations were performed by using the hybrid B3LYP method and the 6-31G* and 6-311++G** basis sets. The comparison of the experimental ECD spectra with the corresponding theoretical ones confirm the (4S,5R) configuration assigned to carquejol. The force fields for the most stable configurations were computed by using those two levels of theory and the complete vibrational assignments for the two conformations of carquejol are reported. The different orientations and directions of the dipole moments of the two structures and the proximity in the nucleophilic indexes with those reported for other terpenes could justify in part the potential biological properties reported for carquejol. The MEP surfaces for both structures reveal that the nucleophilic and electrophilic sites of higher reactivity are principally centred on the OH groups.</dcterms:abstract>
