Introduction: Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae), called alecrim-do-campo, vassoura, or vassourinha, is the precursor of green propolis that is used in traditional medicine for treating conditions such as dyspepsia, fatigue, inflammation, mild fever, and high blood pressure. This study aimed to summarise botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic reports about B. dracunculifolia and contribute new information on its anatomy and essential oil composition. Methods: This study reviewed international databases, querying keywords related to traditional use, phyto chemicals, biological activities (excluding animal studies), nanotechnology, clinical trials, and toxicity. New contributions regarding micromorphology of leaves and stems were analysed by light and scanning electron microscopy, and crystals were observed by polarised microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and Raman troscopies. Essential oils and hydrolates were generated from distinct sites and analysed using gas graphy/mass spectrometry. Results: Botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic studies of B. dracunculifolia are reviewed herein along with this plant’s use in nano- and biotechnological applications. Major compounds present in the essential oils and volatile extracts of B. dracunculifolia include monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, while the organic tracts are rich in phenolics (flavonoids, caffeoylquinic, and prenylated acids) and terpenoids (diterpenoids and triterpenoids). Conclusions: Previously reported chemical and pharmacologic studies of B. dracunculifolia provided solid formation about the pharmacologic effects of this medicinal plant and the green propolis produced from it. New information reported here on the micromorphology and phytochemistry (essential oil and hydrolate tion) of B. dracunculifolia can be used to facilitate the identification of this plant in comparison to other related species and for quality control.

<p>Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. and Baccharis microdonta DC. (Asteraceae) are woody species morphologically similar growing in Uruguay, where not taxonomists people often confuse them in field conditions. As the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia (‘vassoura’ oil) is highly prized by the flavor and fragrance industry, the correct differentiation of the two species is a key factor in exploiting them profitably and reasonably. To differentiate both Baccharis species, in this work their volatile expression profiles were studied as an alternative tool to<br />determine authenticity and quality. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monthly extracted during an entire year from aerial parts of wild populations by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE), and studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS; identification) and conventional gas chromatography (GC-FID; component abundances determination). Enantioselective gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Es-GC/MS) was applied in the search of parameters able to ensure genuineness of each species extract. Qualitative VOCs profiles were found to be similar for both species, being β-pinene, limonene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, and viridiflorol the main components. However, the abundance of those VOCs were two to ten times higher in B.<br />dracunculifolia than in B. microdonta during the year of study. These Baccharis spp. showed species-specific patterns of VOCs expression according to the seasonality, and interestingly, oxygenated compounds (transpinocarveol and myrtenal) increased their abundances at full-flowering stages. The enantiomeric distribution of selected monoterpenes (α- and β-pinenes, limonene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, and α-terpineol) presented differential values for both Baccharis spp., meaning that Es-GC might be a useful tool for differentiating chemically both species in Uruguay for genuineness determination purposes.</p>

<p>Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae) is an aromatic plant species widely distributed across and along South American countries where it grows in different environments, even being considered, in some cases, as a hard to control weed. Its essential oil is highly appreciated in the fragrance/perfumery industry by its woody, foral, and green notes; mainly attributed to (E)-nerolidol and other sesquiterpene alcohols. Recent research has demonstrated a wide range of applications for the essential oil besides its aromatic properties. Although B. dracunculifolia cannot be considered as a medicinal plant for most of the indigenous communities in South America (except for Brazil), modern pharmacological research has demonstrated its high potential for the development of new therapeutic drugs, mainly with antiulcer, anti-infammatory, antiparasitic and anticancer effect. The special literature regarding B. dracunculifolia is profuse and thus, this chapter attempts to summarize the principal knowledge about this species.</p>
