<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Trypanosoma cruzi invades a diversity of nucleated cells in the mammalian host. Macrophages are among the first cells to be parasitized and, after activation by inflammatory stimuli, they participate in the control of infection. However, some parasites manage to evade the immune response and establish a chronic infection in differentiated cells. L-arginine is located at the crossroads of divergent routes that produce metabolites, including nitric oxide and polyamines, which influence the outcome (i.e. resolution or progression) of infection. This article discusses the fate and actions of L-arginine- derived biomolecules formed both in the host and in the parasite during T. cruzi–host-cell interactions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Abstract—Bismuth tri-iodide polycrystalline films were grown by the physical vapor deposition method. Glass 1 1 in size was used as the substrate. Palladium was deposited previously onto the substrates as the rear contact. For growth, bismuth tri-iodide 99.999% was heated at 130–170 C under high vacuum atmosphere (5 10 5 mmHg) or under Ar pressure for 20 hours. Film thickness was measured by the transmission of 59.5 keV 241Am emission, giving values ranging from 90 to 130 m (5%). Film grain size was measured by scanning electron microscopy, and it gave an average of (50 20) m. Detectors were made with the films by depositing palladium as the front contact (contact area 4 mm2) and then performing acrylic encapsulation. Resistivities of 61012.cm and current densities of 240 pA/cm2 at 20 V were obtained for these detectors. The electron mobility and lifetime and the electron mobility-lifetime product were measured by the transient charge technique, which gave values of 4.4 cm2/V.s, 3 310 7s and 1 4 10 6 cm2/V respectively. X-ray film response was checked by irradiating the films with a 241Am source and with an X-ray beam, for different beam energies and intensities and for several bias voltages applied to the detector. A linear response with exposure rate was obtained. Finally, the results were compared with previous ones for monocrystals of bismuth triiodide and polycrystalline films of alternative materials like lead iodide and mercuric iodide.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Elucidation of the oxidation mechanism of naturally emitted reduced sulfur compounds, especially dimethyl sulfide, plays a central role in understanding background acid precipitation in the natural environment. Most frequently, theoretical studies of the addition and H-elimination reactions of dimethyl sulfide with hydroxyl radicals are studied considering the presence of oxygen that further reacts with the radicals formed in the initial steps. Although the reaction of intermediate species with additional hydroxyl radicals has been considered as part of the global mechanism of oxidation, little if any attention has been dedicated to the possibility of reactions of the initial radicals with a second •OH molecule. In this work, we performed a computational study using quantum-chemical methods, of the mechanism of H-abstraction from dimethyl sulfide under normal atmospheric conditions and in reaction chambers at different O2 partial pressure, including complete absence of oxygen. Additionally, important rate coefficients were computed using canonical and variational transition state theory. The rate coefficient for abstraction affords a 4.72 × 10–12 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 value, very close to the most recent experimental one (4.13 × 10–12 cm3 molecule–1 s–1). According to our best results, the initial methyl thiomethyl radical was obtained at −25.2 kcal/mol (experimentally −22.4 kcal/mol), and four important paths were identified on the potential energy surface. From the interplay of thermochemical and kinetic arguments, it was possible to demonstrate that the preferred product of the reaction of dimethyl sulfide with two hydroxyl radicals is actually dimethyl sulfoxide.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A simple version of a composite scheme is described, based on a combination of density functional geometry and frequencies evaluation, valence energies obtained using the CCSD(T)-f12 method extrapolated to the complete basis set limit, and core-valence correlation corrections employing the MP2 method. The procedure was applied to the 38 reactions in Truhlar’s HTBH38/08 and NHTBH38/08 databases. Mean unsigned deviation (MUD) for the complete set of 68 independent barriers is 0.43 kcal mol-1, compared to 1.37 kcal/mol for G4 and 1.69 kcal/mol for the dispersioncorrected M06-2X method. Its accuracy is also better that that of other calculations using composite methods of similar cost. The MUD of the new scheme on the barriers in the DBH24/08 subset (12 out of the 38 reactions in both other sets) is 0.31 kcal mol-1, better than that obtained at the expensive CCSD(T,full)/aug-cc-pCV(T+d)Z level (0.46 kcal mol-1) and comparable to the most exact (and costly) Wn calculations (MUD=0.14 kcal mol-1). The maximum unsigned deviation (MaxUD) of the new method for all the reactions studied is 1.71 kcal/mol. G4 and M06-2X, on the other side, exhibit MaxUDs of 6.7 and 8.4 kcal/mol respectively

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A primary cause of food waste in households is a lack of food capabilities. Yet, the antecedents of food capabilities and its relationship with causes of food waste across different situational contexts remain poorly understood. We apply self‐efficacy theory in combination with convenience orientation and good provider identity in a mixed‐methods study. Findings reveal that the sequential structure of self‐efficacy explains how capabilities contribute to food waste avoidance. A good provider identity, however, increases food waste, and also turns out to further convenience orientation. Food capabilities, in turn, reduce convenience orientation. Qualitative insights shed light on consumer's own accounts of their abilities. The findings contribute to a theory‐based understanding of how consumers manage the complex issue of food waste. Findings imply that public policy and marketing should aim to strengthen consumers' self‐efficacy beliefs and redefine the good provider identity, in particular in social contexts, to reverse its effect on waste.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of the present work was to explore the effect of the inclusion of nutritional warnings on consumer associations with labels of ultra-processed products. The study was conducted in Uruguay at two points in time, before and after the compulsory implementation of nutritional warnings. A total of 163 participants evaluated three labels of ultra-processed products using a word association task. In the first evaluation (T1), performed 9 months before the entry into force of nutritional warnings, labels were presented without warnings. Nine months later (15 days after the entry into force of the policy), participants evaluated the labels with warnings again (T2). Data were analyzed using content analysis. At T1, when labels were presented without nutritional warnings, responses to the word association task were related to a description of the product category, expected sensory characteristics of the products, brand names, liking and eating occasions. However, when the labels were presented with the warnings at T2, a significant increase in the frequency of mention of responses was observed within the categories Excessive content of sugar/fat/sodium, Not healthy, Diseases and negative health conditions, Rejection to consume, and Unexpected information. Results from the present work suggest that immediately after their implementation, nutritional warnings cause a salience bias that make excessive nutrient content and its negative health consequences more salient in consumers’ minds, especially in the case of products with a particular health-related connotation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of this study was to concentrate whey protein by ultrafiltration process, evaluating the pressure at 1–3 bar and temperature of 10–20℃. In the conditions that show the more protein concentration were evaluated the interfacial and emulsifying properties at pH 5.7 and 7.0. The whey concentrate at 10℃ and 1.5 bar showed the higher protein value 36% (w/w), with soluble protein of 33.82% (solubility of 93.94%) for pH 5.7 and 34% (solubility of 94.4%) for pH 7.0, respectively. The whey concentrate powder present particle size distribution between 0.4-110 um. The whey at pH 5.7 and 7.0 was not observed significant differences in the resistance parameters of the oil/water layer interface. The interfacial film formed by the proteins presented an essentially elastic behavior in both pH, and in pH 5.7 the emulsion was more stable with lower diameter droplets. The concentrate whey showed techno-functional properties (emulsification and solubility), which allow the use as ingredients in products of industrial interest in food products such as mayonnaise, ice cream, sauces, and others.

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Pachyrhizus ahipa is an Andean leguminous plant which has purple-pigmented edible roots. The content and distribution of the phenolic compounds in the skins and flesh of P. ahipa roots as well as their antioxidant capacity were studied. Total phenols, flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins were quantified and the effect of the extraction solvent on the maximum absorbance wavelength (λvis-max) was measured. The ATR-FTIR spectrum and stability of the purified anthocyanin extracts were analyzed. Individual anthocyanins were partially characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and absorbance spectra. Ahipa skins had much more phenols (3.25 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), flavonoids (3.0 mg catechin equivalents/g) and tannins (4.6 mg tannic acid equivalents/g) than the flesh, which was reflected in a higher antioxidant capacity. Changing the extraction solvent from acidified methanol to acidified water shifted the λvis-max 16 nm lower, suggesting copigmentation reactions. Anthocyanin in the skins was >8.7 content in the flesh, and the chromatographic analysis showed at least 6 different anthocyanins with identical retention times for skins and flesh, including delphinidin, pelargonidin and cyanidin as aglycons. The absorbance spectra showed that two of them are acylated structures. Pigments were stable for at least 180 min at pH 1 and 25 °C, but they were affected by increased pH and temperature. These anthocyanins may be a potential source of natural pigments.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Colon cancer has a high prevalence worldwide and is a serious public health problem. Early diagnosis greatly improves its prognosis and, among the existing methods, the detection of fecal occult blood is the only noninvasive test recommended for screening of the disease. To promote its massive application as a screening tool for asymptomatic populations in low-resource settings, the availability of a reliable and cost-effective method is imperative. Here, we describe the development and validation of a sensitive nanobody-based immunoassay for the detection of hemoglobin in human fecal samples. The nanobodies were selected from a library generated from a llama immunized with human hemoglobin, using a high-throughput platform that enabled the identification of the best nanobody pair. The assay allowed a sub-ng/mL limit of detection to be reached in phosphate-buffered saline, and was validated with stool samples, showing excellent reproducibility (CV% < 15 inter-day precision) and accuracy at 2 and 4 μg of hemoglobin per gram of feces, which are well below the recommended cutoff for this test (10–20 μg/g). Moreover, no cross-reactivity was observed with a panel of dietary non-human hemoglobins removing the need for pre-test dietary restrictions. Considering that the monodomain nature of nanobodies facilitates their straightforward and low-cost production by bacterial fermentation, with their provided sequences and using synthetic genes, the assay reported here could be replicated in any laboratory to perform thousands of tests for early detection of colorectal cancer at almost no cost.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bisphosphonates are the most commonly prescribed drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone illnesses. Some of them have also shown antiparasitic activity. In search of improving the pharmacological profile of commercial bisphosphonates, our group had previously developed first row transition metal complexes with N-containing bisphosphonates (NBPs). In this work, we extended our studies to heteroleptic palladium–NBP complexes including DNA intercalating polypyridyl co-ligands (NN) with the aim of obtaining potential multi-target species. Complexes of the formula [Pd(NBP)2(NN)]·2NaCl·xH2O with NBP = alendronate (ale) or pamidronate (pam) and NN = 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) were synthesized and fully characterized. All the obtained compounds were much more active in vitro against T. cruzi (amastigote form) than the corresponding NBP ligands. In addition, complexes were nontoxic to mammalian cells up to 50–100 µM. Compounds with phen as ligand were 15 times more active than their bpy analogous. Related to the potential mechanism of action, all complexes were potent inhibitors of two parasitic enzymes of the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway. No correlation between the anti-T. cruzi activity and the enzymatic inhibition results was observed. On the contrary, the high antiparasitic activity of phen-containing complexes could be related to their ability to interact with DNA in an intercalative-like mode. These rationally designed compounds are good candidates for further studies and good leaders for future drug developments.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The beads of "Iglesia Colonial" were recorded in funerary contexts of the Chimu Inca Period (1450-1532 A.D.) and Early Colonial Period (1532-1650 A.D.). The importance of studying this site lies in understanding the evolution of human occupation between the Inca transition and the arrival of the Spaniards to the north coast of Peru. In the “Pampa La Cruz” site, tombs containing beads and ceramic vessels prepared with the decorative technique of “the negative" were discovered. In this work fragments of the ceramics of this site were investigated, its mineralogical composition was determined qualitatively and quantitatively. This information would help to identify the possible source of clays used for the preparation of the vessels, which, in turn, could help determine if the vessels came from various places, or if the site's inhabitants themselves processed them.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Microorganisms offer an alternative green and scalable technology for the synthesis of value added products. Fungi secrete high quantities of bioactive substances, which play dual-functional roles as both reducing and stabilizing agents in the synthesis of colloidal metal nanoparticles such as silver nanoparticles, which display potent antimicrobial properties that can be harnessed for a number of industrial applications. The aim of this work was the production of silver nanoparticles using the extracellular cell free extracts of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and to evaluate their activity as antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents. The 45–nm diameter silver nanoparticles synthesized using this methodology possessed a high negative surface charge close to −30 mV and showed colloidal stability from pH 3–9 and under conditions of high ionic strength ([NaCl] = 10–500 mM). A combination of environmental SEM, TEM, and confocal Raman microscopy was used to study the nanoparticle-E. coli interactions to gain a first insight into their antimicrobial mechanisms. Raman data demonstrate a significant decrease in the fatty acid content of E. coli cells, which suggests a loss of the cell membrane integrity after exposure to the PchNPs, which is also commensurate with ESEM and TEM images. Additionally, these biogenic PchNPs displayed biofilm disruption activity for the eradication of E. coli and C. albicans biofilms]]></dcterms:abstract>

Both compounds were chemically and structurally characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, infrared and UV-vis spectroscopies, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The study was complemented with density functional theory calculations (DFT). The results show an asymmetrical charge distribution in both compounds, with the electron density accumulated around the nitrogen and oxygen atoms, leaving the positive charge surrounding the N-H and C-H bonds in the hydrazine group. Consequently, the molecules stack in an antiparallel fashion in the crystalline state, although the contribution of the polar contacts to the stability of the lattice is different for 1 (18%) and 2 (42%). This difference affects the density and symmetry of their crystal structures. Both molecules show intense UV-Vis light absorption in the range 200–350 nm (1) and 200–500 nm (2), brought about by π → π* electronic transitions. The electron density difference maps (EDDM) revealed that during light absorption, the electron density flows within the π-delocalized system, among the pyridyl/thiophene ring, the nitro group, and the N′-methyleneacetohydrazide moiety. Interestingly, compounds 1 and 2 constitute broad-spectrum antibacterial candidates, displaying potent antibacterial activity with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values around 0.5–2.0 μg/mL. They also show weak or moderate antifungal activity against the yeast-like pathogenic fungus Candida albicans]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In the present report, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) doping mechanism of regioregular poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT). First, we focus on the effects of LiTFSI doping in both crystalline and amorphous structures of P3HT by performing a complete structural analysis supported by classical molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. Then, we study the effects of LiTFSI doping on electronic properties such as charge transfer and charge transport by performing Raman and impedance spectroscopy, in both cases supported by density of functionals theory (DFT) calculations using periodic boundary conditions. Our structural analysis suggests that the LiTFSI dopant is mainly located in the amorphous region and only a small fraction is located in the crystalline region. In addition, our DFT calculations also suggest that the LiTFSI dopant can effectively act as an electronic acceptor only when it is located in the vicinity of and is accessible to the thiophene rings of P3HT due to the formation of a π···Li chemical bond as an anchoring mechanism, permitting the electronic charge loss of thiophene rings through the sulfonyl groups. A thorough understanding of the LiTFSI doping mechanism of poly(alkyl thiophenes) (P3HT in this particular case) is crucial to elucidating not only the electronic but also the eventual mixed ionic–electronic transport mechanism and its promising properties, particularly as electrodes for lithium ion battery applications.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Several studies have shown that the inclusion of front of pack nutritional warnings is a potentially effective strategy to encourage consumers to avoid products with high content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases. In this context, the present work aimed at exploring consumers’ reaction towards sodium reduction in the context of the implementation of warnings in three scenarios: package evaluation, tasting and intention to re-purchase the product after tasting, using white bread as case study. A total of 171 consumers participated in the study that encompassed four parts. Firstly, consumers received two bread samples with different salt content (2.00% and 1.38% salt) under blind conditions and were asked to rate their overall liking and to indicate the one they preferred. Then, they were asked to look at four bread packages differing in graphic design and the presence of warnings. They had to rate their expected liking and to indicate the one they would purchase. Finally, consumers were asked to try the bread they had previously chosen, to assess their overall liking and to indicate their willingness to purchase it again. Salt content significantly affected consumer hedonic reaction towards the breads. Two consumer segments with different preference for the salt content in bread were identified: 58% of consumers preferred the bread with 2.00% salt while 42% preferred breads with 1.38% salt. However, when looking at the packages the majority of consumers in both groups selected bread packages that did not feature warnings. In addition, after having tried the bread, most consumers were willing to buy the bread they had previously chosen again, which is promising in terms of reaching sustainable changes towards lower salt levels. Results from the present work suggest that, in the case of bread, nutritional warnings have potential to shift consumers’ preferences to lower sodium content, even after trying the products.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The objectives of this study were: to assess the efficiency of high hydrostatic pressure or ultra-high pressure homogenization against Mycobacterium smegmatis in milk and to discuss whether M. smegmatis can be considered a suitable surrogate for other Mycobacterium spp. in high pressure inactivation trials using milk. Three strains of this specie (CECT 3017, 3020 and 3032) were independently inoculated into both skimmed (0.2% fat) and whole milk (3.4% fat) at an approximate load of 6.5 Log CFU/ml and submitted to HHP treatments at 300, 400 or 500 MPa for 10 m at 6°C and 20°C. Evolution of the surviving cells of the inoculated strains was evaluated analysing milk immediately after the treatments and after 5 and 8 d of storage at 6°C. HHP treatments at 300 MPa were seldom efficient at inactivating M. smegmatis strains, but lethality increased with pressure applied in all cases. Generation of sub-lethal injured cells was observed only after 400 MPa treatments since inactivation at 500 MPa was shown to be complete. Significant differences were not observed due to either temperature of treatment or fat content of milk, except for strain CECT3032, which was shown to be the most sensitive to HHP treatments. Milk inoculated with strain CECT3017 was submitted to ultra-high pressure homogenization (UHPH) treatments at 200, 300 and 400 MPa. Maximum reductions were obtained after 300 and 400 MPa treatments, although less than 3.50 Log CFU/ml were inactivated. UHPH did not cause significant number of injured cells. The usefulness of this species as a marker for pressure-based processing seems limited since it showed greater sensitivity than some pathogenic species including other Mycobacteria reported in previous studies.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The high availability of products with high sugar content, particularly among those targeted as children, has been identified as one of the factors that contribute to the childhood obesity epidemic. For this reason, product reformulation has been recommended as one of the strategies that can be implemented to achieve short-term reductions in children’s sugar intake. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using cross-modal (taste-odor-texture) interactions as a strategy for reducing the sugar content of products targeted at children, using milk desserts as case study. A series of 5 vanilla milk desserts were formulated: a control sample with 12% added sugar and 4 sugar-reduced samples (7% added sugar) prepared following a 2 × 2 experimental design by varying vanilla (0.4% and 0.6% w/w) and starch (4.3% and 4.7% w/w) concentrations. A total of 112 children (8–12 years old) tasted the desserts and performed a dynamic sensory characterization task using either temporal check-all-that-apply or temporal dominance of sensations. In addition, they assessed the overall liking of all samples. Results showed that sugar-reduced samples did not significantly differ from the control sample in terms of their average overall liking scores. However, individual differences in children’s hedonic reaction were found; three clusters of children with distinctive liking patterns were identified. The increase in vanilla and starch concentration led to an increase in overall liking for over 80% of the children. Sensory dynamic profiles revealed significant but subtle differences among samples. Results from the present work suggest that cross-modal interactions could contribute to minimizing the sensory changes caused by sugar reduction, which could enable to achieve larger reductions if implemented in the context of gradual sugar reduction programs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The catalysts were prepared by the polymerized complex method based on the Pechini-type reaction route and characterized by a variety of physical and spectroscopic techniques. Samples were calcined in air at 850 °C for 4 h. All catalysts showed a well-defined NiO phase and a mixed oxide with a general formula A2B2O7 (A: La; B: Ce and/or Zr). NiO was completely reduced to metallic Ni on all catalysts under pure H2 at 650 °C. Ni reducibility is favored by the presence of Ce. Redox properties of Ce can also explain a synergetic effect leading to the higher basicity of the catalyst containing Ce and Zr (x = 0.5). Catalytic tests were performed at 650 °C by feeding the fixed-bed tubular reactor with a crude glycerol:water solution containing 30 wt% glycerol. The best results were achieved on the catalyst displaying the highest basicity (Ni-La2(Ce0.5Zr0.5)2O7 both under steam and oxidative reforming conditions. Removal of carbon and alkali metals by simple procedures allows to a significant recovery of the initial catalytic activity without changes in their chemical and phase structure.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The biodiesel industry generates crude glycerol (CG) at the rate of 10% of the amount of biodiesel produced. With the production of this biofuel increasing, a large amount of CG is produced each year. This results in low price for it and its final disposal becomes a significant problem. Herein, steam reforming represents a viable route to valorize this biodiesel by-product into hydrogen. The performance of Ni–La–Zr catalysts (15 wt%) for steam reforming of a CG without any purification treatment has been investigated at atmospheric pressure and at 500 °C and 650 °C. These materials were prepared using a coprecipitation method with oxalic acid. At 650 °C, the catalyst calcined at 850 °C presents higher catalytic activity and stability and displays better resistance to deactivation by carbon formation than the catalyst calcined at 700 °C. This behavior can be attributed to several causes: higher surface nickel content, higher catalyst reducibility and the presence of oxygen vacancies formed as a consequence of the partial substitution of nickel atoms into the pyrochlore structure during the formation of the biphasic system, which is related to mechanisms that act in the removal of carbon deposits on the catalyst.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The NS2B-NS3 protease has been identified as an attractive target for drug development against Zika virus (ZIKV) and combined drug repurposing and structure-based virtual screening has improved the development of antiviral drugs. In this study, we performed a structure-based virtual screening of 1861 Food and Administration (FDA) approved drugs available in DrugBank by the selection and docking validation of crystal structure of ZIKV NS2B-NS3 protease (PDB ID 5H4I) using Glide and DOCK 6 software. The antihistaminic chlorcyclizine (Grid score −24.8 kcal/mol) exhibited the most promising interaction with NS2B-NS3 protease in comparison to crystallography ligand (Grid score −15.6 kcal/mol) by interaction to Tyr161 by hydrophobic interactions in the binding site of NS2B-NS3 which is recognized as an important amino acid in substrate molecular recognition. Cytotoxicity and global antiviral activity assay in Vero cells by MTT method showed that chlorcyclizine reduced the ZIKV induced cytopathic effect (EC50 of 69.0 ± 7.3 μM and SI = 1.9), and explicit molecular dynamics simulations implemented on a NAMD program indicated great stability of chlorcyclizine in protease binding site, suggesting the repurposing of chlorcyclizine as a promising finding in anti-ZIKV drug development.]]></dcterms:abstract>
