This research explores the hydrochar production from grape pomace via hydrothermal carbonization and the determination of the kinetic parameters of its combustion process. The hydrochar was obtained by hydrothermal carbonization at 220 ◦C for 240 min with self-generated pressure. The process indicated a mass yield of 65.21 %, and the hydrochar exhibited an HHV of 26.60 MJ/kg, showing its potential as an efficient biofuel. Thermokinetic analysis of hydrochar combustion was conducted using multiple complementary methods: isoconversional analysis, mathematical deconvolution, combined kinetic analysis of each step, and optimization of parameters through nonlinear regression. The findings indicate that the overall process starts at ~152 ◦C and involves three apparent overlapping steps. A summary of the resource.
This research analyzes the thermal and kinetic behavior of the combustion of hydrochar obtained industrially from green waste biomass. The combustion kinetic analysis was studied using thermogravimetry and applying complementary methods such as Friedman’s isoconversional analysis, mathematical deconvolution, combined kinetic analysis, and optimization by nonlinear regression of the kinetic curves. The process involves two overlapping steps: the organic compounds devolatilization and the oxidation of fixed carbon. For steps 1 and 2, the apparent activation energies were 178.5 and 183.1 kJ mol− 1, while the apparent ln(A∕s−1) were 31.2 and 30.0, respectively. The truncated Šesták–Berggren model was used as a surrogate for distributed reactivity, resulting in n1 = 1.37 and m1 = −0.54 for step 1, and n2 = 3.31 and m2 = 0.496 for step 2. In step 1, the m < 0 serves as a surrogate for an activation energy distribution, while in step 2, the value of n > 1 would substitute a gamma distribution of frequency factors. Finally, the obtained kinetic model allows successful predictions of thermal programs outside the range of the analysis.

Gas-phase kinetics of the overall reactions of • OH and • Cl radicals with dihydrofuran-3(2H)-one (oxolan-3-one) and dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone (2MTHF-3-one) were studied at 298 K and atmospheric pressure. The rate coefficients were determined using the relative method in a 480 L multipass glass reactor coupled to an FT-IR detection system. The rate coefficients found for oxolan 3-one and 2MTHF-one with • OH radicals (k1 and k2) and with • Cl atoms (k3 and k4) at 298 K and atmospheric pressure (in cm3 molecule− 1 s − 1 ) were: k1 = (1.86 ± 0.29) × 10− 11, k2 = (2.64 ± 0.47) × 10− 11, k3= (1.15 ± 0.28) × 10 − 10, and k4 = (1.33 ± 0.32) × 10− 10, respectively. Reactivity trends were developed by comparison with other similar structures and Fukui indices employed to determine the reactivity of different sites on the ring. The singularity of the reaction with • OH was assessed by computational studies which showed the formation of several stable hydrogen bonded complexes, explaining the difference with the reaction with the • Cl atom. SAR estimations of the rate coefficients were calculated and compared to the experimental values.

An alternative to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels is the use of biomass as an energy source. In this sense, the rural sector in Latin America has great potential due to its multiple biomass sources. For this reason, this study aims to analyze potential technologies related to the production of energy from biomass and its application in the Latin American rural sector. To achieve this, four key processes are analyzed. First is biomass conditioning through solar dryers. Next are the thermochemical processes that allow for their transformation into biofuels, for which the pyrolysis and the hydrothermal methods were selected due to the flexibility of the products obtained. Subsequently, cogeneration is studied to produce electrical and thermal energy from biomass or its derivatives. Finally, to close the CO2 cycle, a balance of CO2 fixation in a forest plantation is presented as an example of carbon accumulated in biomass. The literature systematic review allowed us to determine that the technologies mentioned in this work have different degrees of implementation in the Latin American rural sector. However, they have great potential to be applied on a large scale in the region, making it possible to adapt energy production to climate change and improve the life quality of its inhabitants.

Mixed strain dynamics are still not well or easily monitored although recently molecular identification methods have improved our knowledge. This study used a chromogenic differential plating medium that allows the discrimination of four of the main selected biofuel strains that are currently under development for ethanol production from cellulosic hydrolysates. Complete fermentation of hexoses and xylose was obtained with a yeast consortium composed of Spathaspora passalidarum, Scheffersomyces stipitis, Candida akabanensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results showed that C.akabanensis excessively dominated consortium balance. Reducing its inoculum from 33 to 4.8% improved population strain balance and fermentation efficiency. Comparison of the consortia with single strain fermentations showed that it optimize sugar consumption and ethanol yields. This simple and cheap method also has advantages compared with molecular methods, as the yeast strains do not need to be genetically marked and identified cell proportions are probably active in the fermentation system as compared to DNA determination methods.

El uso desmedido de fuentes de energía fósiles ha provocado desbalances en la composición atmosférica lo que ha causado un efecto invernadero alterando la temperatura del planeta. Esta problemática ambiental, sumada al esperado incremento del precio de los combustibles fósiles en el futuro próximo, plantea la necesidad de explorar nuevas fuentes de energía y por consiguiente desarrollar las tecnologías adecuadas para su producción. Una alternativa para la producción de energía y combustibles es la biomasa. Sin embargo, suele tener un alto contenido de humedad y de grupos oxigenados en su estructura química, lo que hace que su poder calorífico sea inferior al de los combustibles fósiles y su estabilidad temporal escasa. El uso de tratamientos termoquímicos o biológicos permite transformar la biomasa en biocombustibles con mayor poder calorífico inferior (PCI), mayor estabilidad temporaria y en algunos casos adecuarlos a los sistemas existentes utilizados para combustibles fósiles. Uno de los tratamientos termoquímicos utilizados es el procesamiento hidrotérmico. En especial, la licuefacción hidrotérmica (LHT) es un proceso termoquímico que consiste en someter la biomasa a temperaturas entre 250-400 oC y alta presión (10-25 MPa) durante tiempos de residencia cortos (0-60 min) en medio acuoso [1] produciendo biocombustibles sólidos, líquidos y gaseosos, conocidos como hydrochar, biocrudo y gas, respectivamente y una solución acuosa rica en compuestos orgánicos disueltos. Al ser un proceso en medio acuoso permite el uso de biomasa húmeda sin necesidad de una operación previa de secado evitando con esto pérdidas energéticas. Por otro lado, la biomasa a utilizar para fabricación de biocombustibles debe ser abundante y cercana al lugar de transformación para evitar altos costes de transporte. En el caso de Uruguay se estima una producción de residuos lignocelulósicos de 2.2 a 2.8 millones de m3 por año ( 1.5 a 2 millones de toneladas por año) [2] siendo el eucalipto y el pino las maderas más producidas. Es por esta disponibilidad de biomasa que se decidió estudiar la producción de biocombustibles mediante LHT utilizando estas dos maderas. 3 4 En este trabajo se estudió el efecto de las condiciones de reacción en la distribución de los productos de la LHT de madera de pino y eucalipto, así como la influencia de dichas condiciones sobre el PCI de los productos. Para ello se estudió el efecto del tiempo de residencia, la temperatura, la relación solución acuosa:biomasa y el uso de carbonato de potasio y bicarbonato de potasio como catalizadores, así como un análisis de la factibilidad energética del proceso. Se determinó que los parámetros de reacción influyen en la distribución de productos, siendo los de mayor influencia la relación solución:biomasa a la cual se trabaja y el uso de los catalizadores. Se obtuvieron biocrudos e hydrochar con mayor PCI que la biomasa de partida debido a la disminución del contenido de oxígeno en el material.
