Among these, interactions of lectins with monosaccharides have been investigated extensively in the past, while polysaccharide-lectin interactions have scarcely been investigated. Here, we explore the adsorption of galactomannans (GM) extracted from Prosopis anis on cellulose thin films determined by a combination of multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (MP-SPR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Flavobacterium sp. AUG42 is a cellulase-producing bacterium isolated from the Antarctic oligochaete Grania sp. (Annelida). In this work, we report that AUG42 produces a glycoside hydrolase cocktail with CMCase, PASCase and cellobiase activities (optimum pHs and temperatures ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 and 40 to 50 °C, respectively). The time-course analyses of the bacterial growth and cellulase production showed that the cocktail has maximal activity at the stationary phase when growing at 16 °C with filter paper as a cellulosic carbon source, among the tested substrates. The analyses of the CAZome and the identification of secreted proteins by shotgun Mass Spectrometry analysis showed that five glycoside hydrolyses are present in the bacterial secretome, which probably cooperate in the degradation of the cellulosic substrates. Two of these glycoside hydrolyses may harbor putative carbohydrate binding modules, both with a cleft-like active site. The cellulolytic cocktail was assayed in saccharification experiments using carboxymethylcellulose as a substrate and results showed the release of glucose (a fermentable sugar) and other reducing-sugars, after 24 h incubation. The ecological relevance of producing cellulases in the Antarctic environment, as well as their potential use in the bio-refinery industry, are discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this work the thermal behavior of wood impregnated with ZnCl2 is studied. Impregnation of wood with ZnCl2 is a treatment used in activated carbon production, and liquefaction and fast pyrolysis of biomass. Frequently, the impregnated wood is dried for several hours at temperatures above 370 K and then it is carbonized. Catalytic pyrolysis occurs, giving rise to a complex set of reactions. A TG/DTA study was done on the raw material, the activated carbon, the pure ZnCl2 and the intermediate products in order to study the mass and thermal changes occurring. Elemental analysis and SEM analysis were also carried out. An exothermic torrefaction develops during the drying step; the torrefied product is carbonized in an endothermic process that involves ZnCl2 volatilization. The washed impregnated wood carbonizes through an exothermic process that may involve the decomposition of cellulose, lignin and the solid product of hemicellulose torrefaction.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The bulk of the cellulose currently employed by industry is isolated from wood through Kraft pulping, a process which traditionally involves a barrage of environmentally detrimental chemicals and is undeniably ‘non-green.’ In this report we present a simple and novel alternative approach for the processing of lignocellulosic materials that relies on their solubility in solvent systems based on the ionic liquid (IL) 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl). Dissolution profiles for woods of different hardness are presented, making emphasis on the direct analysis of the cellulosic material and lignin content in the resulting liquors by means of conventional 13C NMR techniques. We also show that cellulose can be readily reconstituted from the IL-based wood liquors in fair yields by the addition of a variety of precipitating solvents. Spectroscopic and thermogravimetric studies indicate that the polysaccharide obtained in this manner is virtually free of lignin and hemicellulose and has characteristics that are comparable to those of pure cellulose samples subjected to similar processing conditions]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Disposal of biomass wastes, produced in diVerent agricultural activities, is frequently an environmental problem. A solution for such situation is the recycling of these residues for the production of activated carbon, an adsorbent which has several applications, for instance in the elimination of contaminants. For some uses, high mechanical strength and good adsorption characteristics are required. To achieve this, carbonaceous materials are conformed as pellets or briquettes, in a process that involves mixing and pressing of char with adhesive materials prior to activation. In this work, the inXuence of the operation conditions on the mechanical and surface properties of briquettes was studied. Eucalyptus wood and rice husk from Uruguay were used as lignocellulosic raw materials, and concentrated grape must from Cuyo Region–Argentina, as a binder. DiVerent wood:rice and solid:binder ratios were used to prepare briquettes in order to study their inXuence on mechanical and surface properties of the Wnal products.]]></dcterms:abstract>
