Bees are widely recognized as biomonitors of the environment. However, simple, low cost indicators based on bee activities (other than mortality) that can be used to monitor agroecosystems' environmental status have not been reported yet. Biological and chemical indicators were evaluated using Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The objective was to classify environments into the categories of affected and non (or minimally) affected by pesticides presence. SVM models based on simple population and brood area estimations provided 57% accuracy in classifications. Models based on variables constructed using chemical analysis results (the number of pesticides detected in each sample; the total sum of toxic units, related to bees and mammals; and the sum of field Environmental Impact Quotient, EIQ, of each detected pesticide) provided 100% accuracy in classifications. This fact can be used to obtain biological indicators from a wide number of sites and apply the SVM model to indicate risky seasons and ecosystems where further chemical indicators should be studied. As the input variables are totally explicit and can be changed or updated, the approach followed in this study using SVM provides a stable basis to improve the development of indicators for agricultural production systems biomonitoring. The beehive as a quantitative monitor of pesticide residues applied over a soybean crop was studied through a semi field experiment of controlled exposure of honey bees to pesticides in macro tunnels. The distribution within exposed beehives of pesticides commonly used in soybean plantation, was assessed. Residue levels of insecticides in soybean leaves, honey bees, wax, honey and pollen were analyzed. The transference from pesticides present in the environment into the beehive was evidenced. The obtained results allow relating pesticide concentrations present in the environment with traces found in foraging bees. Therefore, pesticide transference ratios could be calculated for each detected compound (acetamiprid, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam) which showed a linear inverse trend with their 1-octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow). The least transferred pesticide to the hive (acetamiprid) has the highest vapor pressure (Vp). This study gives new insights on the usefulness of monitoring the environment through beehives aiming to evaluate if agroecosystems remain sustainable. It also contributes to generate valuable information for model building aiming to predict environmental quality through beehive's analysis.

La aplicación de agroquímicos impacta sobre todo el ecosistema. No solo se ven afectados los organismos blanco, sino también poblaciones no objetivo y el ambiente en general. Este impacto es evaluado habitualmente monitoreando por separado suelo, agua, aire y biota. Sin embargo esta información resulta parcial ya que no se tiene una herramienta que sea capaz de integrar y globalizar la información ambiental disponible a partir de la cual sea posible calificar la calidad del ambiente. En este sentido integrador, el presente trabajo de tesis exploró el empleo de la abeja melífera y su colmena como bioindicador de la calidad ambiental de ecosistemas agrícolas, dada su fuerte interacción con el mismo necesaria para su supervivencia (alimentación y reproducción). Se buscó correlacionar los datos químico analíticos de residuos de pesticidas con las observaciones sobre la biología de la colmena para caracterizar la problemática de distintos sistemas productivos donde se emplean agroquímicos, con el objetivo general de contribuir a la evaluación en forma global del efecto que tienen los paquetes tecnológicos utilizados, tanto aisladamente como en conjunto, sobre los ecosistemas en estudio. Se desarrollaron metodologías adecuadas para el análisis multirresiduo en los distintos componentes de la colmena (abejas, cera, miel y polen) de un conjunto de pesticidas que incluyen aquellos empleados en los diferentes sistemas productivos en las zonas donde se encuentren las colmenas. Se realizaron experimentos y monitoreos que involucraron colmenas caracterizadas localizadas en medio de cultivos extensivos típicos de nuestro país, las que fueron luego evaluadas química y biológicamente. Se demostró que los diversos agroecosistemas, los cambios en los mismos y las estaciones del año se pueden diferenciar a través de los perfiles de residuos de pesticidas de cada producto de la colmena. Se mostró mediante un experimento a semi-campo que las abejas efectivamente transfieren residuos de neonicotinoides aplicados en soja al interior de la colmena detectándose los mismos en cera. Se relacionaron las concentraciones de insecticidas presentes en el ambiente con las trazas determinadas en las abejas y se encontró que esta transferencia tiene una relación lineal inversa con su propiedad fisicoquímica Kow, se pudo observar que el pesticida que menos se transfirió (acetamiprid) tiene la presión de 14 vapor más alta. El encontrar relaciones entre la transferencia y las propiedades fisicoquímicas de tiametoxan, imidacloprid y acetamiprid, de cumplirse para un rango mayor de compuestos, permitiría calcular las concentraciones presentes en el ambiente a partir de lo determinado en la colmena. Con los resultados analíticos y biológicos obtenidos se estudió la posibilidad de desarrollar modelos basados en técnicas de aprendizaje automático para la evaluación del riesgo y del impacto ambiental de la utilización de los distintos paquetes tecnológicos para cultivos de extensión como soja, arroz, sorgo, trigo o praderas. Específicamente, se desarrollaron modelos de tipo Support Vector Machines (SVM) utilizando algoritmos implementados en el software libre R para realizar aprendizaje supervisado sobre los datos mencionados explorando el desempeño de distintos subconjuntos de resultados químicos y biológicos como indicadores. Los resultados tienen además relevancia para la actividad apícola, industria incipiente y cada vez más importante en nuestro país. Los insumos químicos, biológicos e informáticos generados en este trabajo de tesis son un aporte al conocimiento y una herramienta para la evaluación de la sustentabilidad de los agroecosistemas del país a través de la implementación de la colmena como un biomonitor.

The influence of insecticides commonly used for agricultural purposes on beehive depopulation in Uruguay was investigated. Honeycombs, bees, honey and propolis from depopulated hives were analyzed for pesticide residues, whereas from active beehives only honey and propolis were evaluated. A total of 37 samples were analyzed, representing 14,800 beehives. In depopulated beehives only imidacloprid and fipronil were detected and in active beehives endosulfan, coumaphos, cypermethrin, ethion and chlorpyrifos were found. Coumaphos was present in the highest concentrations, around 1,000 μg/kg, in all the propolis samples from active beehives. Regarding depopulated beehives, the mean levels of imidacloprid found in honeycomb (377 μg/kg, Standard Deviation: 118) and propolis (60 μg/kg, Standard Deviation: 57) are higher than those described to produce bee disorientation and fipronil levels detected in bees (150 and 170 μg/kg) are toxic per se. The other insecticides found can affect the global fitness of the bees causing weakness and a decrease in their overall productivity. These preliminary results suggest that bees exposed to pesticides or its residues can lead them in different ways to the beehive.
