Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Heteronuclear zinc(II):mixed-lanthanide(III) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing the formula [LnAx LnBy Zn3(oda)6(H2O)6]·nH2O (Ln = lanthanide(III) ion, LnB is smaller than LnA, x+y=2, n= 13 or 14) were obtained by direct reaction of the corresponding metal ion salts and oxydiacetate ( OOC-CH2-O-CH2-COO ) in aqueous solution, followed by slow solvent diffusion. This strategy led to the isolation of thirteen pure crystalline samples of isostructural hexagonal compounds (space group P6/mcc). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction was complemented by the analytical determination of the final LnB=LnA molar ratio by microwave induced plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Results show that the experimentally determined LnB=LnA molar ratio is systematically higher than that set out in the synthesis, especially for combinations of Ln that have larger size differences. Dual emission luminescence is observed for the compounds containing a combination of the more efficient visible-emitting Ln (Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy). The selected aliphatic ligand does not promote antenna effect. Thus, tunable color luminescence can be achieved by selectively targeting each Ln preferential excitation wavelength. Dual emission is also observed for CeEu mixed-MOF since the simultaneous excitation of both Ln is possible. Interestingly, GdEu mixed-MOF also shows dual emission when only Gd is directly excited.

Honey mineral content depends on the type and the surroundings of the flower from where it originates and on the production process. The presence of heavy metals represents a risk to the consumer’s health. Lead is usually determined by atomic spectrometry where a stage of acidic digestion is mandatory. In this work, hydride generation was chosen as the sample introduction technique; plumbane was directly generated in honey and determined by microwave induced plasma emission spectrometry (HG MIP OES). Different cleaning procedures, use of arsenic as internal standard, matrix match calibration and oxygen flow injection in the plasma were evaluated for controlling the frothing in the reaction chamber, abatement of the memory effect, and minimising gas-phase interferences. Limits of detection (3 s) and quantification (10 s) were 0.024 mg kg 1 and 0.081 mg kg 1; linear range was within 8.1–56 μg kg 1 and precision of repeatability 13 %. Trueness was assessed at three concentration levels with a reference sample (recoveries between 107 % and 122 %) and with spiked samples at 0.10 mg kg 1 level (recoveries between 82 % and 116 %). Direct HG MIP OES is a fast and confident screening method for lead monitoring in honey.

This analytical note presents a simple and economic analytical method for quantifying toxicologically relevant arsenic species in urine—the sum of As (III), As (V), monomethylarsonic acid, and dimethylarsinic acid—by hydride generation microwave-induced plasma atomic emission spectrometry (HG-MIP-AES). The accuracy of the method was in the range of 95%–97%; the intra-assay precision was within the range of 1.8%–6.2% expressed as the relative standard deviation, and the interassay precision was within 6.9%–15%. The limits of detection and quantification were 1.8 and 5.4 μg L− 1 , respectively. The validated method resulted very helpful to assess the health risk of As exposure through drinking water and was successfully applied in urine samples collected from wood impregnation plant workers. The methodology can be postulated as a viable alternative to expensive techniques, such as liquid chromatography (HPLC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), for biomonitoring studies.

A summary of the resource.
An analytical method for sample preparation of igneous rocks and subsequent determination of Si, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Ba, Sr, and Ti by means of microwave induced emission spectrometry (MP-AES) was developed and validated. The proposed sample preparation procedure avoids the use of perchloric acid and provided accurate results even for silicon determination using an acid digestion with hydrofluoric acid. The determination of major elements in rocks is required for the design of classification diagrams that provides relevant information for geochemical analysis. • MP-AES showed to be an adequate technique to measure major and some trace elements that are relevant for classification of igneous rocks. • This method is in better agreement with the principles of the Green Analytical Chemistry and constitutes a reliable alternative to classical analytical and tedious procedures used for geochemical analysis. • The methodology was successfully applied to chemical classification of rocks from Valle Chico (Uruguay) using a Total Alkali-Silica Diagram (TAS).

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A novel method for the determination of trace cadmium in honey is presented. It consists of a preconcentration step based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and measurement by flame AAS. Samples are dissolved in water. A mixture of carbon tetrachloride (extraction solvent) and acetonitrile (dispersion solvent) containing ammoniun pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) as complexing agent is injected rapidly into the dissolved sample by means of a syringe pump. After centrifugation, an aliquot of the organic phase is injected in the nebuliser of an atomic absorption spectrometer by means of a lab-made microsampling device. Response (integrated absorbance) was linear with concentrations up to 12 μg L−1. Precision (sr(%)) at the 5 μg L−1 level was < 3.1%. Detection and quantification limits were 1.6 and 5.5 μg per 100 g of honey respectively. Six commercial samples were spiked at the 10 μg per 100 g level and analysed by the proposed method and by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The results did not differ at the 5% significance level, with recoveries for the DLLME/FAAS method ranging from 82 to 125%. The proposed method requires simple sample preparation and does not use expensive equipment, thus it could be used as screening method for the content of cadmium in honey.

Uruguay is among the top eight exporters of rice in the world. Assessing the levels of Arsenic (As) in rice grain is a concern for human health. To ensure food safety, the laboratories need simple and rapid validated analytical methodologies to provide fast response, to allow the commercializa- tion of the products. A simple ultrasound-assisted method for sample preparation and determination of total arsenic using Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry was validated. The figures of merit were adequate for control purposes in terms of precision and trueness. Commercial samples of Uru- guayan rice were analyzed and the results did not differ significantly with those obtained using ICP-MS. The total arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.24 mg kg −1 . These values were below the maximum limit established in the region. The proposed methodology is simple, economic and does not require dras- tic conditions of sample preparation or expensive techniques.

A summary of the resource.
New and environmentally friendly procedures for the determination of nutritious and harmful elements in highly consumed foodstuffs such as vegetables are needed. Three accurate and efficient methods for the extraction of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in globe artichoke were optimized and validated. The sample preparation methodologies developed consisted of extraction with diluted acid assisted by either an ultrasonic probe or an ultrasonic bath, and an ozone-based treatment of the acid solution. The elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. Experimental conditions were optimized by means of multivariate experiments. A comparative study using Student's t-test to establish whether there was a difference between using ultrasound (probe and bath) or ozone was performed. The results showed that the three methods were adequate for the extraction of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in globe artichoke. Trueness was verified by analysis (n = 6) of a certified reference material and by performing a total digestion with a microwave-assisted procedure. At the 95% significance level, results were statistically equivalent to the certified values and to those obtained by total digestion for all the elements. Analytical precision expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD (%), n = 6) was less than 10% in all cases. Samples of globe artichoke from a Uruguayan family farmer were analyzed. Results showed that globe artichoke fruits and leaves are a promising source of Cu and Ni and particularly they are a good source of Zn.

Spectrophotometric analysis by attenuated total reflection was originally developed by Fahrenfort to utilize its low equivalent penetration of the light beam and, therefore, low sensitivity for the study of highly absorbent samples. Nearly simultaneously, Harrick proposed the method for the study of surfaces because of the low real penetration of the beam. Here sensitivity is at a premium, and in spite of the use of multiple-reflection techniques, it remained barely adequate for many cases. A considerable increase in the sensitivity of attenuated total-reflection spectroscopy (ATR) would not only resolve this problem but would make the technique useful in microanalysis because of the very low sample thickness required.

The use of zero-order and first-derivative flame emission spectrometry has been investigated for the determination of basal concentrations of lithium in serum and urine at the µg dm–3 level. No significant matrix effect was observed; however, it was necessary to make use of background correction techniques. Two or three wavelength measurements and first-derivative spectrometry were used for this purpose; both methods gave similar results. Detection limits for serum of approximately 0.09 µg dm–3 were found by both zero-order and first-derivative emission measurements, while normal lithium levels were found to be 29.3 and 1.17 µg dm–3 for urine and serum, respectively.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A flow injection method is proposed for the determination of paracetamol in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The method is based on the nitration of paracetamol with sodium nitrite, and the absorption of the reaction product is measured at 430 nm in alkaline medium. Unlike other colorimetric methods used for determination of paracetamol, this method does not require the use of heat. The influence of several operating parameters is studied. The method was applied to the determination of paracetamol in oral solutions and in tablets, alone or associated with caffeine. When the results were compared with those obtained by the official HPLC method (USP 24) the relative differences found were from 0.4 to 2.3%, with relative standard deviations below 1%.
