<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two straightforward methods for glyphosate and AMPA analysis in honey through ion chromatography coupled to Q-Orbitrap accurate high-resolution mass spectrometry as well as their application to real samples are presented. The sample preparation step is accomplished through dilution with methanol–water or water. No pH adjustment is necessary. Recoveries were in the range 80 to 110% with RSDs < 20%. The LOQ of glyphosate was 0.005 mg kg−1, far below the allowed EU-MRL (0.05 mg kg−1) in honey, showing a linear range of 0.005–0.5 mg kg−1 and medium matrix effect. LOQ of AMPA was 0.02 mg kg−1. Glyphosate quantitation was performed with internal or external calibration yielding identical results, thus broadening the applicability of the method as isotopically labelled standards are no longer mandatory. The method was applied to 32 honey samples from different origins. Glyphosate was found in 81% of the samples and 41% were above the EU-MRL showing its applicability in routine work. AMPA was not detected in any of the samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A new analytical method has been developed and successfully evaluated in routine application for the quantitative analysis of a selected group of organophosphate pesticides (coumaphos, chlorpyrifos and ethion) which can be found at trace levels in propolis tinctures (ethanolic propolis extracts); a valuable commodity used as raw material in the food and pharmaceutical industries for which there have been few attempts for pesticide residue analysis reported in the literature. The proposed methodology is based on matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) using aluminum sulfate anh. a novel dispersant material and subsequent column chromatography clean-up in silica gel prior to gas chromatography (GC) with both flame photometric detector (FPD) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection used for the routine quantification and identification of the residues, respectively. The limits of detection, for coumaphos, chlorpyrifos and ethion were below 26.0 g/kg in FPD and 1.43 g/kg for MS detection. Mean recoveries were in the range of 85–123% with RSD values below 13%, which suggests that the proposed method is fit for the purpose of analyzing pesticides in propolis tinctures containing high concentration of polyphenolics. The method has been successfully applied in our laboratory for the last 2 year in the analysis of real propolis tinctures samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

After its filtration, water was injected directly in a liquid chromatograph coupled to a hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap-mass spectrometer (QqLIT). The list of target analytes included organophosphates, phenylureas, sulfonylureas, carbamates, conazoles, imidazolinones and others compounds widely used in different countries where rice is cropped. Detection and quantification limits achieved were in the range from 0.4 to 80 ng L−1 and from 2 to 150 ng L−1, respectively. Correlation coefficients for the calibration curves in the range 0.1–50 g L−1 were higher than 0.99 except for diazinon (0.1–25 g L−1). Only 9 pesticides presented more than 20% of signal suppression/enhancement, no matrix effect was observed in the studied conditions for the rest of the target pesticides. The method developed was used to investigate the occurrence of pesticides in 59 water samples collected in paddy fields located in Spain and Uruguay. The study shows the presence of bensulfuron methyl, tricyclazole, carbendazim, imidacloprid, tebuconazole and quinclorac in a concentration range from 0.08 to7.20 g L−1.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this paper, the influence of several operational parameters on a well established multiresidue LC–MS/MS method has been studied in relation to the analysis of 150 pesticides commonly present in vegetable samples. The operational parameters investigated are: (i) the influence of different modifiers (0.1% formic acid; 5mMammonium formiate; 5mMammonium acetate in aqueous phase) – both on the retention time and on the analytical response of the studied compounds; (ii) the effect of the analytical column’s temperature on the retention time and on the analytical response of the pesticides investigated; (iii) the effects of co-elution in mixture containing 150 pesticides and, additionally, (iv) the carrying out of a study about the common transitions obtained by LC–MS/MS. Various common transitions were found among the 150 pesticides, but there were only two problematic cases, the pairs diuron–fluometuron and prometryn–terbutryn, which have common scanned transitions and have very close retention times. The use of ammonium salts as modifier instead of formic acid reports enhancement or suppression of the response depending on the pesticides. No great influence on the retention time or on the response of the pesticides and commodities studied was observed with relation to the column temperature. Two different columns: an HPLC (5m particle size) and an UHPLC analytical column (1.8m particle size) have been used. As was expected, shorter run times and lower peak width was achieved with the UHPLC column. In this paper, the effect of the compounds on each other in the MS analysis when the number of coeluting compounds is quite high is also described. Mainly small suppression or enhancement co-elution effect was observed, but some particular pesticides presented high sensitivity (>±60% effect) when they elute together with others. This is an important factor and it has to be taken into account when performing multiresidue pesticide analysis.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Microcystins (MCs) are the most common cyanotoxins found worldwide in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. The rapid and accurate analysis of MCs and nodularin (Nod-R) in fish tissue is important for determining occurrence, following trends, and monitoring exposure for risk assessment and other purposes. The aim of this study was to develop a streamlined and reliable sample preparation method for eight MCs (MC-RR, MCYR, MC-LR, MC-WR, MC-LA, MC-LY, MC-LW, and MCLF) and Nod-R in fish, and conduct a validation of the new method using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for analysis and compare the results with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Different sample preparation methods were compared, and a simple extraction protocol with acidified acetonitrile/water (3:1) followed by hexane partitioning cleanup was found to be most effective. Thorough validation of the final method was conducted, and 90– 115% recoveries were achieved for all analytes except for MC-RR, which gave 130% average recovery (isotopically labeled internal standards were unavailable to correct for possible biases). The use of electrospray ionization in the negative mode gave few interferences and minimal matrix effects in the LC-MS/MS analysis overall. Precision was typically 10–20% RSD among multiple days in experiments, detection limits were <10 ng/g in the fish tissue (catfish, basa, and swai filets), and no false-positives or false-negatives occurred in blind analyses of many spiked samples. The ELISA was unable to distinguish between MCs but was found to correctly assess the presence or absence of MCs and Nod-R in the blind-fortified fish tissues. The capability of these approaches to measure covalently bound MCs was not assessed]]></dcterms:abstract>
