<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Fluoride in drinking water has beneficial or harmful health effects depending on its concentration. This highlights the need for new low-cost and portable sensors capable of in situ monitoring of F− ions. Unfortunately, achieving high levels of water compatibility and fluoride specificity remains a challenge. Here, four new urea-based discrete sensors are prepared and characterized. The sensors containing anthracenyl- (5) and 9H-fluorenyl- (7) signaling units exhibit intense luminescent emissions in dimethyl sulfoxide, the former being particularly sensitive and selective to fluoride. In water, 5 displays a superior sensitivity (871 M−1) and a detection limit (8 μm) below international guidelines, albeit with cross-sensitivity to H2PO4‾. To enhance the performance, 5 and 7 are embedded into a fluoride-imprinted polymeric matrix to give solid-state sensors (5P and 7P, respectively). 5P shows good sensitivity (360 M−1) and specificity in water. Besides, it has a low detection limit (35 μm) and a response linear range (118–6300 μm) encompassing the limit established by the Environmental Protection Agency (211 μm). Furthermore, 5P also displays good reusability and adequate recovery values in real-sample testing (102 ± 2%), constituting the first example of a low-cost anion-imprinted polymeric probe tailored for the selective sensing of fluoride in aqueous samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The reactivity of alkali–manganese(II) and alkali trifluoroacetates towards amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) was studied in the solid-state. K4Mn2(tfa)8, Cs3Mn2(tfa)7(tfaH), KH(tfa)2, and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO–) were thermally decomposed under vacuum in fused quartz tubes. Three new bimetallic fluorotrifluoroacetates of formulas K4Mn3(tfa)9F, Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F, and K2Mn(tfa)3F were discovered upon thermolysis at 175 °C. K4Mn3(tfa)9F and Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F feature a triangular-bridged metal cluster of formula [Mn3(μ3-F)(μ2- tfa)6(tfa)3]4−. In the case of K2Mn(tfa)3F, fluoride serves as an inverse coordination center for the tetra hedral metal cluster K2Mn2(μ4-F). Fluorotrifluoroacetates may be regarded as intermediates in the trans formation of bimetallic trifluoroacetates to fluoroperovskites KMnF3, CsMnF3, and Cs2MnF4, which crystal lized between 250 and 600 °C. Decomposition of these trifluoroacetates also yielded alkali hexafluorosili cates K2SiF6 and Cs2SiF6 as a result of the fluorination of fused quartz. The ability to fluorinate fused quartz was observed for monometallic alkali trifluoroacetates as well. Hexafluorosilicates and heptafluoro silicates K3SiF7 and Cs3SiF7 were obtained upon thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 between 200 and 400 °C. This ability was exploited to synthesize fluorosilicates under air by simply reacting alkali trifluoroa cetates with a-SiO2 powder.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The sensing of fluoride ion through convenient and inexpensive methods has become significant analytical goals. The state-of-the-art involves the supporting of urea/thiourea optical discrete anion sensors into a polymeric scaffold. Nevertheless, high levels of selectivity are difficult to achieve, since the colorimetric/fluorometric response is also quenched by other anions such as dihydrogenphosphate. In this work we present, for the first time, the design of a polymeric optical fluoride chemosensor by using the anion-imprinting technique. First, four polymerizable anion receptors containing a urea-type binding site and different fluorophores as signaling units were prepared. One of them (1-(4-vinylphenyl)-3-(1-naphtyl)-urea) shows the most intense fluorescence emis sion in solution, exhibiting high optical sensitivity only for F– and H2PO4– . The electronic and structural features behind the optical response and anion affinity were elucidated through experimental and computational tools. To enhance the optical sensitivity and selectivity, a fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor was prepared starting from this soluble sensor. The fluorescent emission is 13 times higher for the polymer and it is switched off only in the presence of fluoride, while for the rest of the anions, including H2PO4– , there was almost no optical response. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor reported so far.]]></dcterms:abstract>
