Es un hecho clásico bien comprobado que la evaporación o calentamiento intenso de soluciones mercuriales, en especial cuando va acompañado de reacciones enérgicas, produce pérdidas de mercurio por volatilización; de ahí la necesidad de emplear aparatos condensadores para recuperarlo; últimamente se han señalado posibilidades de pérdidas de mercurio, por absorción del vidrio. En esta primera comunicación, aún reconociendo el hecho clásico, se establece como posible causa de pérdidas importantes de mercurio, otro proceso que por lo irregular, no concuerda con la teoría de un fenómeno de absorción. El proceso se pone en evidencia calentando en ampollas cerradas a la lámpara soluciones mercuriales de H2SO4 diluído (10ug de Hg al estado de cloruro en H2SO44N),si luego se determina el mercurio por extracción con ditizona se comprueban pérdidas sumamente irregulares entre el 10 y el 60%, pero si se emplean H2SO4 encontrado (35N) o sólo diluído al medio (18N) las pérdidas son nulas; igualmente la recuperación es total si el calentamiento se realiza con H2SO4 diluído en presencia de pequeñas cantidades de HNO3. Hasta el momento no se ha llegado a definir la naturaleza del proceso pero se sacaron conclusiones para evitarlo y por lo tanto establecer las condiciones para conducir la destrucción sulfonítrica sin pérdidas de mercurio; conclusiones confirmadas por los resultados obtenidos en el trabajo adjunto "Dterminación de Mercurio en orinas".
