Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Often referred to as the “king of cancers” pancreatic cancer is a serious threat to public health, as most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Although tumor immunotherapy is a major advancement in cancer treatment, its effectiveness in pancreatic cancer remains limited, particularly owing to the unique characteristics of the tumor microenvironment. Nano-delivery systems offer a promising approach for overcoming the dense stromal barrier, which is crucial for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy. In this review, we systematically summarize key immunotherapeutic targets, including cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF), immune cells (tumor-associated macrophage (TAM), myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC), regulatory T cells (Treg), tumor-associated neutrophil (TAN), CD4+T, CD8+T cells), extracellular matrix (ECM), and discussed regulatory strategies in pancreatic cancer based on its pathogenesis and recent clinical advances to guide target selection. We then detail the physicochemical properties of nano-delivery systems suitable for pancreatic cancer and outline how tumor microenvironment-responsive linkers can enable particle size or charge conversion. Furthermore, we review the latest research progress on various nano-delivery systems (Lipid-based nanoparticle, Hydrogel/microneedle, Inorganic nanoparticle, Cancer vaccine, Adoptive cell therapy, Exosome/vesicle, Bacteria/virus) to inform the design of pancreatic cancer nanocarriers. Finally, we discuss future directions and summarize the challenges in translating pancreatic cancer nano-delivery systems into clinical practice. By integrating target identification, nanocarrier design, and clinical applications, we aimed to provide a cohesive framework that offers insights to accelerate the development of effective pancreatic cancer therapies.

Abstract

Increasing the effectiveness of vaccines against respiratory viruses is particularly relevant for the elderly, since they are prone to develop serious infections due to comorbidities and the senescence of the immune system. The addition of saponin-based adjuvants is an interesting strategy to increase the effectiveness of vaccines. We have previously shown that ISCOM matrices from Q. brasiliensis (IMXQB) are a safe and potent adjuvant. In this study, we evaluated the use of IMXQB as an adjuvant for the seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) in an aged mice model. Herein, we show that subcutaneous injection of the adjuvanted vaccine promoted higher titers of IgM, IgG (and isotypes), and serum hemagglutination inhibition titers (HAI). Notably, aged mice immunized by intranasal route also produced higher IgG (and isotypes) and IgA titers up to 120 days after priming, as well as demonstrating an improvement in the HAI antibodies against the TIV. Further, experimental infected aged mice treated once with sera from adult naïve mice previously immunized with TIV-IMXQB subcutaneously successfully controlled the infection. Overall, TIV-IMXQB improved the immunogenicity compared to TIV by enhancing systemic and mucosal immunity in old mice conferring a faster recovery after the H1N1pdm09-like virus challenge. Thus, IMXQB nanoparticles may be a promising platform for next-generation viral vaccines.

The immunoregulatory cation channel TMEM176B plays a dual role in tumor immunity. On the one hand, TMEM176B promotes antigen cross-presentation to CD8+ T cells by regulating phagosomal pH in dendritic cells (DCs). On the other hand, it inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation through ionic mechanisms in DCs, monocytes and macrophages. We speculated that formulating BayK8644 in PEGylated chitosan nanoparticles (NP-PEG-BayK8644) should slowly release the compound and by that mean avoid cross-presentation inhibition (which happens with a fast 30 min kinetics) while still triggering inflammasome activation. Chitosan nanocarriers were successfully obtained, exhibiting a particle size within the range of 200 nm; they had a high positive surface charge and a 99 % encapsulation efficiency. In in vitro studies, NP-PEG-BayK8644 did not inhibit antigen cross-presentation by DCs, unlike the free compound. The NP-PEG-BayK8644 activated the inflammasome in a Tmem176b-dependent manner in DCs. We administered either empty (eNP-PEG) or NP-PEGBayK8644 to mice with established tumors. NP-PEG-BayK8644 significantly controlled tumor growth and improved mice survival compared to both eNP-PEG and free BayK8644 in melanoma and lymphoma models. This effect was associated with enhanced inflammasome activation by DCs in the tumor-draining lymph node and infiltration of the tumor by CD8+ T cells. Thus, encapsulation of BayK8644 in chitosan NPs improves the anti-tumoral properties of the compound by avoiding inhibition of antigen cross-presentation.

The combined use of metallic nanoparticles with protective systems has made it possible to manufacture new materials with the desired properties and besides, are a class of nanostructured materials that have recently received attention due to their interesting properties and wide range of applications in catalysis, biology, materials chemistry, sensors, among others. Silver (Ag)-coated iron (Fe) nanoparticles as functional antimicrobial agents have become an important research topic. However, there are synthesis methods and important properties and characteristics that still need to be investigated. In this study, a simple synthesis route for Fe2O3-Ag nanoparticles is presented using the microemulsion reaction (MR) technique, since these systems can be applied as antimicrobial agents in biological processes and subsequently recovered through the use of a magnet. The results obtained to date demonstrate the ability to use the MR method to design and synthesize nanoparticles composed of metals that synergize their properties.

β-Glucosidases (BGLs) are key enzymes for the hydrolysis of glycosidic aroma precursors of wines. However, BGLs produced by oenological yeasts are often inactive or unstable at typical wine pH values. In this work, different immobilization strategies on biomimetic NPs were tested to enhance the stability of Issatchenkia ori entalis BGL and compared with traditional methods on agarose and Eupergit. Immobilization to biomimetic silica NPs by ionic interactions proved to be the most efficient method to achieve enzyme stabilization in model wine at pH 4.0. In particular, the subsequent glutaraldehyde crosslinking, achieved a high immobilization efficiency (71%) with an outstanding stabilization factor of 240-fold with respect to the soluble enzyme. This enzyme derivative preserved practically all the activity (98%) after15 days in model wine supplemented with Muscat glycosides, making possible its application for the release of aroma compounds relevant to the typicity of wine.

Photodynamic therapy has advantages over conventional cancer superfcial tumor therapies, such as insignifcant side efects, minimal cumulative toxicity, excellent functional and cosmetic results, precise target treatment minimizing damage to neigh boring normal tissues, and optimum long-term tumor regression. Upconversion nanoparticles have been proposed to extend photodynamic therapy for treating non-superfcial tumors. In particular, compounds with low phonon energy, like KMgF3, with an optimal synthesis design and a suitable doping system, could be used for this therapy application. This particular matrix allows the incorporation of dopants as transition metals ions (as Mn2+) besides rare-earth elements, minimizing the use of the former. To obtain nanoparticles of suitable size for nanomedicine, we used a factorial experimental design to determine statistical synthesis conditions that signifcantly afect particles’ size. With the proposed synthesis method, it was possible to obtain KMgF3 nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 13.46±0.30 nm to 32.18±0.60 nm, values estimated with the XRD technique and with size distribution suitable for photodynamic therapy. We proved the good correlation between the particle size estimated from transmission electron microscopy images and powder X-ray difraction measurements. According to the statistical analysis, the temperature and the interaction of temperature with MgCl2 concentration signifcantly afect the particle size (signifcance level of 0.05). The present work describes the infuence of solvothermal synthesis parameters on the KMgF3 nanoparticle size for the frst time. The results are particularly interesting for further doping the system and its functionalization, foreseeing the fnal application in cancer treatment.

We successfully synthesized two types of bismuth tri-iodide nanoparticles: uncapped (BiI3) and capped with aniline (BiI3_ani), in order to study their potential as inorganic semiconductor for an organic–inorganic hybrid material with poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT). We developed a novel direct synthesis method that avoids ligand exchange (for BiI3_ani), as well as the necessity of capping agent removal steps (for BiI3) and the formation of sec ondary compounds obtained by other techniques. Additionally, we evaluated and compared the properties of solution-processed P3HT:nanoparticles layers with the film sequence ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:nanoparticles, where ITO is indium tin oxide and PEDOT:PSS is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly styrene sulfonate. We analyzed the layers by UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy and photolumi nescence analysis. We proved that aniline restricts the growth of nanoparticles and improves the processability of the material compared to nanoparticles without capping agent. We demonstrated that both types of nanoparticles can be successfully suspended in a solvent in which P3HT is soluble, improve the UV–Vis absorption of P3HT and interact with this polymer leading to an improved crystalline ordering on the blends compared to pristine P3HT layers. We also demonstrated that BiI3 nanoparticles produce a nanoscopic mixture with P3HT and that it is possible to exploit the photoluminescence emission of P3HT:BiI3_ani layers. Our results show that both types of nanoparticles can be good candidates for use in solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrid material with P3HT, which could be employed for the fabrication of hybrid polymeric–inorganic solar cells with BiI3 nanoparticles as electron acceptor and P3HT as electron donor.

<p>The elucidation of glycans biological function is essential to<br />understand their role in biological processes, both normal and<br />pathological. Immobilized glycoenzymes are excellent tools<br />for this purpose as they can selectively release glycans from<br />glycoproteins without altering their backbone. They can be<br />easily removed from the reaction mixture avoiding their<br />interference in subsequent experiments. Here, we describe the<br />immobilization of peptide-N-glycosidase F (PNGase F) onto<br />silica magnetic nanoparticles with immobilization yields of<br />86% and activity yields of 12%. Immobilized PNGase F showed<br />higher thermal stability than its soluble counterpart, and could<br />be reused for at least seven deglycosylation cycles. It was<br />efficient in the deglycosylation of several glycoproteins<br />(ribonuclease B, bovine fetuin, and ovalbumin) and a protein<br />lysate from the parasite Fasciola hepatica under native<br />conditions, with similar performance to that of the soluble<br />enzyme. Successful deglycosylation was evidenced by a<br />decrease in specific lectin recognition of the glycoproteins<br />(40%–80%). Moreover, deglycosylated F. hepatica lysate<br />allowed us to confirm the role of parasite N-glycans in the<br />inhibition of the lipopolysaccharide-induced maturation of<br />dendritic cells. Immobilized PNGase F probed to be a robust<br />biotechnological tool for deglycosylation of glycoproteins and<br />complex biological samples under native conditions.</p>

<p>The present work addresses some fundamental aspects in the preparation of protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles, in order to ensure an appropriate final product. Ten broadly available and/or easy to implement analytical tools were benchmarked and compared in their capacity to provide reliable and conclusive information for each step of the procedure. These techniques included transmission electron microscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, colloidal stability<br />titration, end-point colloidal stability analysis, cyclic voltammetry, agarose gel electrophoresis and size-exclusion<br />chromatography (SEC). Four different proteins widely used as adaptors or blocking agents were tested, together with 13 nm gold nanoparticles containing different surface chemistries. Among all tested techniques, some of the least popular among nanomaterial scientists probed to be the most informative, including colloidal stability, gel electrophoresis and SEC; the latter being also an efficient purification procedure. These three techniques provide low-cost, low time consuming, sensitive and robust ways to assess the success of the nanoparticle bioconjugation steps, especially when used in adequate combinations.</p>

<p>Background: Microbes are present in almost every environment on Earth, even in those with extreme environmental conditions such as Antarctica, where rocks may represent the main refuge for life. Lithobiontic communities are composed of microorganisms capable of colonizing rocks and, as it is a not so well studied bacterial community, they may represent a very interesting source of diversity and functional traits with potential for biotechnological applications. In this work we analyzed the ability of Antarctic lithobiontic bacterium to synthesize cadmium sulfde quantum dots (CdS QDs) and their potential application in solar cells.<br />Results: A basaltic andesite rock sample was collected from Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, and<br />processed in order to isolate lithobiontic bacterial strains. Out of the 11 selected isolates, strain UYP1, identifed as Pedobacter, was chosen for further characterization and analysis due to its high cadmium tolerance. A protocol for the biosynthesis of CdS QDs was developed and optimized for this strain. After 20 and 80 min of synthesis, yellow-green and orange-red fuorescent emissions were observed under UV light, respectively. QDs were characterized through spectroscopic techniques, dynamic light scattering analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Nanostructures of 3.07 nm, composed of 51.1% cadmium and 48.9% sulfde were obtained and further used as photosensitizer material in solar cells. These solar cells were able to conduct electrons and displayed an open circuit voltage of 162 mV, a short circuit current density of 0.0110 mA cm−2, and had an efciency of conversion up to 0.0016%, which is comparable with data previously reported for solar cells sensitized with biologically produced quantum dots.</p>
<p>Conclusions: We report a cheap, rapid and eco-friendly protocol for the production of CdS QDs by an Antarctic lithobiontic bacterium, Pedobacter, a genus that was not previously reported as a quantum dot producer. The application of the biosynthesized QDs as sensitizer material in solar cells was validated.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The elucidation of glycans biological function is essential to<br />understand their role in biological processes, both normal and<br />pathological. Immobilized glycoenzymes are excellent tools for this purpose as they can selectively release glycans from glycoproteins without altering their backbone. They can be easily removed from the reaction mixture avoiding their<br />interference in subsequent experiments. Here, we describe the<br />immobilization of peptide-N-glycosidase F (PNGase F) onto<br />silica magnetic nanoparticles with immobilization yields of<br />86% and activity yields of 12%. Immobilized PNGase F showed<br />higher thermal stability than its soluble counterpart, and could<br />be reused for at least seven deglycosylation cycles. It was<br />efficient in the deglycosylation of several glycoproteins (ribonuclease B, bovine fetuin, and ovalbumin) and a protein lysate from the parasite Fasciola hepatica under nativeconditions, with similar performance to that of the solubleenzyme. Successful deglycosylation was evidenced by adecrease in specific lectin recognition of the glycoproteins (40%–80%). Moreover, deglycosylated F. hepatica lysate allowed us to confirm the role of parasite N-glycans in the inhibition of the lipopolysaccharide-induced maturation of dendritic cells. Immobilized PNGase F probed to be a robust biotechnological tool for deglycosylation of glycoproteins and complex biological samples under native conditions.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>We report the preparation of carbon-coated cobalt-doped olivine nanoparticles (LiFe1-xCoxPO4/C) by the citrate gel precursor combustion method at different calcination temperatures. This work reveals side effects of cobalt doping, and temperature calcination in the structure, carbon coating characteristics and electrochemical performance of olivine nanoparticles. First, we report the effects of active material/carbon ratio and surface load of active material on the<br />electrochemical properties by evaluating discharge capacity values, reversibility and faradaic efficiency. Once cathode preparation conditions were optimised, information on relevant parameters such as diffusion coefficient of lithium<br />ions can be obtained from the analysis of electrochemical results. Values of diffusion kinetic parameters determined from cyclic voltammetry were compared with those obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Optimal<br />electrochemical responses were observed from electrodes prepared with a 75% of active material and surface loads of 2 mg. cm−2. Since all samples presents a similar crystalline size domain, we can conclude that differences in electrochemical<br />performance can be attributed to the amount and structural features of the carbonaceous coating of the olivine crystals, despite of the fact that we are dealing we a very complex system when considering the cathode preparation.</p>

The antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have made them ubiquitous in a number of real-world industrial applications; however, the antimicrobial mode of action of biogenic AgNPs is not entirely understood. The use of Raman spectroscopy can provide molecular fingerprint information on various chemical and biochemical components in complex systems like microbial cultures, without the need for any complex sample pre-treatment. Consequently, the antimicrobial mechanism of AgNPs can be inferred through morphological and compositional changes of microbial cells that are monitored via changes in Raman band profiles. Here we show the synthesis of biogenic AgNPs using the extracellular cell-free filtrates of Penicillium expansum. The antimicrobial activity of the Penicillium expansum synthesized silver nanoparticles (hereafter PeNPs) was evaluated and the interactions between the nanoparticles and Escherichia coli were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), showing the attachment of PeNPs to the surface of the bacteria and rupture of the bacterial cell membrane. Importantly, we show how Confocal Raman Microscopy can be used as an innovative approach to study the antimicrobial mechanisms, the results of which confirm that the PeNPs induce damage to bacterial and fungal cells, resulting in critical changes to polysaccharides, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.

Pseudocapacitive materials can enhance the energy storage performance of supercapacitors by making use of surface redox reactions. In recent years, different iron compounds have been investigated as pseudocapacitive materials, showing promising features for supercapacitor electrode applications. Carbon nanocomposites containing iron/phosphorus compounds have been prepared from porous carbon, followed by thermal treatment at different temperatures (700°C to 1000°C). The obtained supercapacitor electrodes were evaluated by electrochemical analyses using sulfuric acid electrolyte. The as-prepared nanocomposite contained nanostructured iron oxides or oxyhydroxides, whereas the nanocomposites prepared at 700°C to 900°C were composed of nanostructured iron phosphates. On the other hand, heat treatment at 1000°C caused the formation of nanocrystalline iron phosphides (mostly Fe2P nanoparticles). The Fe-containing samples showed enhanced specific capacitance (246 F g−1 to 447 F g−1 at 10 A g−1), which can be related to the pseudocapacitive contribution of the iron compounds. The sample heat treated at 1000°C exhibited favorable electrochemical performance, showing high electrical capacitance and good rate capability at 40 A g−1. These results reveal that porous carbon/iron phosphide nanocomposites are promising materials for use in supercapacitor electrode applications.

Here, we report the preparation of carbon-coated cobalt-doped olivine nanoparticles (LiFePO4/C) by the citrate gel precursor combustion method. The major contribution of this work is to reveal insights and side effects of cobalt doping, not only in the structure, microstructure, and electrochemical performance of olivine nanoparticles, but also in the consequences on the carbon coating characteristics. Our structural and microstructural studies by means of several instrumentation techniques revealed that the presence of low amounts of cobalt during the synthesis leads to the apparent formation of more porous channels in the carbon coating. In consequence, the electrochemical characterization showed an enhancement in the capacity and diffusion constants for cobalt-doped LiFePO4/C samples in comparison with cobalt-undoped samples.

Peptides isolated from phage display libraries are powerful reagents for small-molecule immunoassay; however, their application as phage-borne peptides is significantly limited by the biological nature of the phage. Here, we present the use of lysine scaffold to prepare a series of different valence peptides to serve as replacements for phage-borne peptides. Benzothiostrobin was selected as a model analyte, the cyclic benzothiostrobin-peptidomimetic in the form of monomer, dendrimer-like dimer, and tetramer were designed and synthesized. Compared with the monomer, the affinity of dendrimer-like dimer and tetramer increased 1.87 and 13.6 times, respectively, as determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). A novel inner filter effect immunoassay (IFE-IA) with positive readout was developed for benzothiostrobin detection utilizing the peptidomimetics attached to upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as energy donor and monoclonal antibody (mAb)-labeled urchin-like gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) as energy absorber, respectively. The sensitivity of the assay based on dendrimer-like tetramer was approximately 6 and 3 times higher than monomer and dendrimer-like dimer, respectively. After optimization, 50% saturation of the signal (SC50) and detection range (SC10 to SC90) of the IFE-IA based on dendrimer-like tetramer were 11.81 ng mL–1 and 2.04–106.17 ng mL–1, respectively. The IFE-IA also shows good accuracy for the detection of benzothiostrobin in authentic samples.

In the present study, synthesis, characterization, and the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles from native isolate of Corynebacterium glutamicum has been reported. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by challenging the dried biomass of C. glutamicum with aqueous diamine silver ([Ag (NH3)2]+) containing 1 mM AgNO3. Synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis. Morphological study of silver nanoparticles was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The spherical morphology of silver nanoparticles was confirmed from SEM image. The TEM image showed the average particle size of silver nanoparticles was about 15 nm. Silver nanoparticles synthesized from C. glutamicum were found to have enhanced antimicrobial activity against selected pathogenic strains. Silver nanoparticles from pure strains of Corynebacterium species was done by many investigators, but as per the present literature, this is the first report on the production of silver nanoparticles using a native strain of Corynebacterium.

Los envases alimentarios activos pueden ser diseñados para reducir y controlar efectivamente la aparición de microorganismos patógenos y de deterioro, y por ende contribuir a la inocuidad y a prolongar la vida útil de los alimentos. Una alternativa de creciente interés dentro del área de envasado es el desarrollo de películas y recubrimientos comestibles y biodegradables a partir de productos naturales. Debido a sus propiedades únicas, los biopolímeros tales como el quitosano (CS) pueden ser utilizados como componentes principales de películas y recubrimientos. En particular, las películas biopoliméricas pueden contener diversos aditivos para mejorar su funcionalidad, tales como agentes antimicrobianos. La nisina (NIS) es una bacteriocina producida por Lactococcus lactis que presenta actividad antibacteriana contra Listeria monocytogenes y es la única bacteriocina Generalmente Reconocida Como Segura (GRAS). Sin embargo, su actividad en alimentos está limitada por varios factores por lo que es posible recurrir a la utilización de técnicas de nanoencapsulación para preservar la actividad y controlar la liberación de dicho compuesto.

A summary of the resource.
The scope of this study included the preparation of silver nanoforms with high antimicrobial efficacy, low cost, and ease of application. The term 'silver nanoforms' refers to silver located on the amorphous or crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2). Silver nanoforms may be used as an alternative to antibiotics in killing bacteria. Pure and silver-incorporated titanium (used as a carrier) was prepared using the sol-gel-modified method. Physical and chemical properties of the samples were described, and the antibacterial activity was indicated using the following strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESKAPE pathogens), and Escherichia coli. The results have shown that the antibacterial activity of silver nanoforms with amorphous TiO2 is much better than that in the samples based on anatase (crystalline TiO2). The sensitivity of the tested bacteria to silver nanoforms depends on physical and chemical properties of the nanoforms and individual characteristics of the bacteria. For the first time, significant participation of amorphous TiO2 in antibacterial compounds has been described through this study.

The use of nanostructured materials for enzyme immobilization is an active field of research due to its large surface area and the new emergent properties derived from its size. The present work is focused on the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles for the adsorption of cysteine-proteolytic enzymes extracted from Bromelia antiacantha Bertol (Bromeliaceae) fruit. The results show that enzyme adsorption is highly dependent on the temperature and pH. The biocatalyst activity increased up to 40 %, once immobilized onto the magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, they can be recovered using a magnet allowing them to be reused up to 5 cycles with a marginal loss (5 %) of the initial activity.

The role of α‐ and β‐d‐glucose, and d‐gluconate anion, acting as capping agent, on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was evaluated using both Raman and density functional theory studies. The particles were synthetized employing glucose, as reducing and blocking agent, in alkaline conditions. Capping agents were characterized through surface enhancement Raman spectroscopy together with modeling performed using silver clusters. Several geometries were optimized, and its energies and wavenumbers were calculated for each of them. Vibration normal modes from d‐glucose isomers and d‐gluconate were obtained and compared with those reported in bibliography, showing a satisfactory correlation. Comparison between experimental and calculated frequencies reveals a preference for d‐gluconate anion acting as capping agent under the necessary presence of d‐glucose on the surface of the AgNPs. The study of energies shows a greater affinity of d‐gluconate for the silver atoms (above −1.3 eV for both geometries) than for other configurations of the glucose molecule (about −0.66 eV in the case of α‐d‐glucose).

Nanoencapsulation may improve antimicrobial activity of nisin when applied on food systems such as lean beef. Nisin-loaded nanoparticles were prepared by alginate ionic gelation and further complexation with chitosan. A 3-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken experimental design and response surface methodology were used to optimize the formulation. Nanoparticles had an encapsulation efficiency of 36.1 ± 0.6%, a z-average of 66.4 ± 8.9 nm and a zeta potential of −31.7 ± 2.6 mV. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations confirmed particle size found by dynamic light scattering. Also, Raman spectroscopy analyses and zeta potential measurements showed ionic interactions between nisin and alginate. In vitro assessment of inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes growth at 4 °C indicated sustained antimicrobial activity of nisin-loaded nanoparticles for 21 days. Furthermore, encapsulated nisin was able to inhibit L. monocytogenes growth in vacuum-sealed, refrigerated beef samples for 10 days when applied at 400 IU/g and for 24 days when applied at 800 IU/g, while free nisin controlled microbial growth for only 4 and 17 days respectively. In sum, we describe the application of experimental design tools to produce nisin-loaded nanoparticles that may be used in the food industry to control microbial growth and hence extend the shelf-life of lean beef.

Vitamin A and its esters are commonly found in topical applications because of their advantageous properties, however, have the drawback that are highly sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize a novel formulation of solid lipid nanoparticles suitable for topical applications in order to protect vitamin A from degradation. Vitamin A-loaded nanoparticles were successfully prepared by hot homogenization employing Gelucire 44/14® and cetyl alcohol as carrier materials, showing an entrapment efficiency of more than 90%. Particle size, measured by dynamic light scattering, was ca. 40 nm, while transmission electron microscopy images showed that dried nanoparticles were spherical with an average size of about 30-50 nm. Small angle X-ray scattering was used to study their aspect ratio and their physicochemical properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, additionally, stability of vitamin A was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Herein, we report the tuning of the structural and organic magnetoresistance response of poly(9-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) with magnetic nanoparticle addition under exposure to low applied magnetic fields. X-ray diffraction analysis showed evidence of PVK conformational changes by either adding magnetic nanoparticles or by applying an external magnetic field. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that the loss of aromaticity could lead to slight but detectable modifications in the PVK structure. Confocal Raman spectroscopy under low applied magnetic field evidenced modifications in PVK singlet and triplet populations followed by theoretical simulation to assign the vibrational modes in PVK different multiplicities. Both the addition of magnetic nanoparticles and the presence of an applied magnetic field showed an increase in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio. PVK nanocomposites showed negative low field magnetoresistance (MR) reaching maximum values of MR (2 kOe) = −1.1 and −9.0% for T = 280 and 20 K, respectively. The MR dependence with low applied magnetic fields showed a typical behavior in agreement with the electron–hole recombination mechanism. This latter effect could be experimentally associated with the change in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio, as observed by Raman analysis. In addition, the PVK magnetoresistance effect could also be ascribed to conformational changes induced by the presence of magnetic nanoparticles and an applied magnetic field, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis.

The use of inorganic nanoparticles as electron acceptors in hybrid solar cells has been increased. Some advantages compared to electron acceptors based on organic materials, are better electron transfer and lower production costs. We report the synthesis of ββ-HgS nanoparticles by a combination of solution method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizing agent, and hydrothermal treatment to diminish nanoparticles size and improve size distribution. The combination of a bottom-up and a top-down technique proved to be an appropriate method to obtain HgS nanoparticles with sizes in the order of the Bohr radius, essential for charge carrier generation in the solar cell. Additionally, PVP was replaced by hexadecanethiol (HDT). This exchange allowed the spin coating of a thin film of ββ-HgS dispersed in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) onto a glass substrate. Characterizations showed that the HgS nanoparticles and the polymer were homogeneously mixed, but several aggregated HgS nanoparticles were still present. The lowering in the photoluminescence signal of the layer is an indicative of charge carrier transfer between the nanoparticles and P3HT. Our results are encouraging for the development of hybrid solar cells using ββ-HgS nanoparticles and P3HT. To our knowledge, these results are the first obtained for ββ-HgS nanoparticles, using a bottom-up/top-down approach. It is also the first time a nano-ββ-HgS/P3HT layer with promising properties as hybrid solar cell is reported.
