Lime wax influences feeding behavior of Cryptotermes brevis and the viability of its Foaina sp. Symbionts

Based on the already described property of “Tahiti” lime wax, Citrus latifolia Tanaka to protect wood against powderpost termites, Cryptotermes brevis Walker, a detailed study of its anti-insect effects on termites and its influence on the number of protozoa of genus Foaina present in insect intestines is described in this work. The mortality of C. brevis was significantly higher than in untreated controls at concentrations above 50 mg/cm3 and similar to controls with starved termites. The value of LC50 was calculated as 32.76 mg/cm3. Also a residual action was evaluated six months after the blocks were treated. A deterrent but sub-lethal effect on termites was observed. The number of protozoa in termite intestines decreased significantly compared to control. The lime wax was effective against C. brevis, reducing the feeding activity and the survival of termites, and appears to have the potential to be used in the treatment of wood for its protection against powderpost termites.
