Abstract

The cyclization of Schiff bases derived from phenethylamines to 1-methyl-, 1-phenyl- and 1-benzyl-tetrahydroisoquinolines has been examined. It was confirmed that a free OH group para or ortho to the place of ring closure is of fundamental importance for the possibility of cyclization under neutral or weekly acid conditions. The cyclization reaction with Schiff bases of phenylacetaldehydes synthesized via Darzens reaction is very easy. The IR, UV and NMR spectra of the Schiff bases and tetrahydroisoquinolines have been compared and from this methods deduced for following up the ring closure reaction.
