Sulfonamides, derivatives of sulfanilamide, are classified as antimicrobialdrugs. Several authors have reported modified pharmacological and toxicological properties when some of these drugs are administered in the form of copper complexes. Taking into account the importance of these compounds, we have prepared and characterized the copper (II) complexes with sulfameter, sulfamethazine, sulfamerazine, succinylsulfathiazole, sulfadiazine. sulfamethoxypyridazine and sulfachlopyridazine and investigated their solution behavior. Characterization by means of elemental analysis, TGA, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy showed that all complexes coordinate through the oxygen of the sulfonic acid and the heterocyclic nitrogen. We are also reporting the superoxide dismutase mimetic activity. The average values of IC50 is 250 11M . The complexes were screened for their activity against E.coli and S. aureus, showing a significant antimicrobial activity. We are now studying the behavior with sulfonamide-resistant microorganisms
